Its deeply rooted history makes it a perennial destination, with more than 3.5 million visitors each year. Although it is one of the most high profile towns in the country, Newport is also one of the most cloistered. Private Newport: At Home and in the Garden offers an invitation to venture beyond the privet hedges and massive iron gates. It is the first book to step inside the privately owned mansions to reveal a diverse collection of architectural jewels complemented by spectacular gardens. These homes, created by distinguished architects and landscape designers, are stunning examples of Newport's 375-year "old-world" heritage. Book So Good They Can t Ignore You

Download or read book So Good They Can t Ignore You written by Cal Newport and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-18 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an unorthodox approach, Georgetown University professor Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice, and sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving their careers. Not only are pre-existing passions rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work, but a focus on passion over skill can be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping. Spending time with organic farmers, venture capitalists, screenwriters, freelance computer programmers, and others who admitted to deriving great satisfaction from their work, Newport uncovers the strategies they used and the pitfalls they avoided in developing their compelling careers. Cal reveals that matching your job to a pre-existing passion does not matter. Passion comes after you put in the hard work to become excellent at something valuable, not before. In other words, what you do for a living is much less important than how you do it. With a title taken from the comedian Steve Martin, who once said his advice for aspiring entertainers was to "be so good they can't ignore you," Cal Newport's clearly written manifesto is mandatory reading for anyone fretting about what to do with their life, or frustrated by their current job situation and eager to find a fresh new way to take control of their livelihood. He provides an evidence-based blueprint for creating work you love, and will change the way you think about careers, happiness, and the crafting of a remarkable life.

Book Newport Firsts A Hundred Claims to Fame

Download or read book Newport Firsts A Hundred Claims to Fame written by Brian M. Stinson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Newport, Rhode Island has been a city of innovation since its beginning nearly four centuries ago. Some of the claims on a national level are true, while some have been greatly distorted over the years. The freethinking citizens include the first to defeat a British squadron and the author of the first written constitution guaranteeing the right to religious freedom in world history. The first law banning the importation of Negroes in the colonies was enacted in the city, and the first Methodist church in the world with a steeple and bell is located here. But was the first female lighthouse keeper in America from here? Was Newport the first place where a medical lecture was given? Author and research historian Brian M. Stinson offers a chronological collection of vignettes detailing the city's many firsts." --

Book excerpt: Following in the steps of Beatriz Williams and Amor Towles, this richly atmospheric, spellbinding novel transports readers to the dazzling, glamorous world of Newport during the Roaring Twenties and to a mansion filled with secrets as a debonair lawyer must separate truth from deception. Spring 1921. The Great War is over, Prohibition is in full swing, the Depression still years away, and Newport, Rhode Island's glittering “summer cottages” are inhabited by the gloriously rich families who built them. Attorney Adrian De la Noye is no stranger to Newport, having sheltered there during his misspent youth. Though he’d prefer to forget the place, he returns to revise the will of a well-heeled client. Bennett Chapman's offspring have the usual concerns about their father's much-younger fiancée. But when they learn of the old widower’s firm belief that his first late wife, who “communicates” via séance, has chosen the beautiful Catherine Walsh for him, they’re shocked. And for Adrian, encountering Catherine in the last place he saw her decades ago proves to be a far greater surprise. Still, De la Noye is here to handle a will, and he fully intends to do so—just as soon as he unearths every last secret, otherworldly or not, about the Chapmans, Catherine Walsh . . . and his own very fraught history. A skillful alchemy of social satire, dark humor, and finely drawn characters, Newport vividly brings to life the glitzy era of the 1920s.

Book Newport a Fairy Tale of Sorts

Download or read book Newport a Fairy Tale of Sorts written by Timothy N. Thomas and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-12-30 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story about Newport Beach California, in all its glory and frailties. This is the real story of the O.C. All fiction is true. I am going to come right out and say it. It all happened sometime, someplace, somewhere. Non-fiction, that's where the quality B.S. comes from nowadays. 'A Million Little Pieces' - Need I say more? But fiction is all true and the worst offenders are these nasty little fairy tales. They're the truest of them all. In fact I think fairy tales where invented so that authors would not have to defend their positions on the issues they write of. 'Hey it's only a fairy tale get over it.' - That kind of brush off. Fairy tale writers are sneaky bastards, they always tell the truth. Theodore W. Wilson Professor of Literature

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located around the shores of Lake Sebasticook, Newport first attracted settlers about 1800 and was officially incorporated in 1814. Originally known for abundant fishing and hunting, the lake is the site of an ancient Native American fish weir that predates the pyramids. The settlers who established the town were also industrious and established businesses providing a variety of products, including silk, leather, lumber, and ice. The arrival of the railroad in 1855 further increased local industry and boosted tourism by making the lake accessible to tourists and sportsmen. As fishermen and vacationers alike came to Newport, hotels and camps flourished. The GAR property, Camp Benson, was a popular destination--particularly the Pavilion dance hall. In 1891, a woolen mill and condensed milk plant were built, both of which were vital to the local economy well into the 20th century. In recent decades, Newport has reclaimed some of its natural heritage by making major efforts to restore Lake Sebasticook and the East Branch of the Sebasticook River.
