Book You Will Wear a White Shirt

Download or read book You Will Wear a White Shirt written by Nick Sibbeston and published by D & M Publishers. This book was released on 2015-09-19 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in a remote Northern community, Nick Sibbeston had little reason to believe he would one day fulfill his mother’s ambition of holding a career where he would “wear a white shirt.” Torn away from his family and placed in residential school at the age of five, Sibbeston endured loneliness, callous treatment and sexual assault by an older boy, but discovered a love of learning that would compel him to complete a law degree and pursue a career in politics. As a young, firebrand politician, Sibbeston played an instrumental role during a critical moment in Northwest Territories politics, advocating tirelessly to support the economic and political development of First Nations people in the North, and participating in early discussions of the separation of Nunavut. Sibbeston’s career advanced in great strides, first as an MLA, then one of Canada’s first Aboriginal lawyers, then as a cabinet minister and eventually premier of the Northwest Territories. Finally, he was appointed to the Senate of Canada, where he continues to represent the people of Canada’s North, not least in advocating for the generations affected by residential school policies. Although his years at residential school compelled Sibbeston to fight tirelessly for the rights of Aboriginal northerners, they also left a mark on his mental health, fuelling continual battles with anxiety, depression and addiction. It was only in later life that healing began to take place, as he battled his demons openly, supported not just by the medical community but also by his strong faith and the love of his wife and family.

Paul hired Michael as his security guard, beginning a thirty-year music business career in which he worked with such legendary names as Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, The Osmonds, Sheena Easton, Frank Sinatra, Bon Jovi, Cher and Kiss. As tour manager, Michael was responsible for every aspect of their safety and their comfort, from making sure they were not mobbed on stage to making sure they got paid. Whatever they wanted, he got hold of. To some of them he became close. He was best man at Jon Bon Jovi's wedding, and provided personal security for five years for Cher at her Malibu home. Book Everyday Nightmares Life is a Story story one

Download or read book Everyday Nightmares Life is a Story story one written by Frida-Victoria Tillian and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-01-14 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People tell you that real life is not like novels, no matter how great they might be. That's not really true though, is it? Because crazy stuff happens to you all the time, meaningless, but crazy stuff. Like how the taste of your cheap lunch changes when the smell of cleansing agent fills the fast food restaurant. Or how you thought the guy who sits by himself in the park is weird, until you notice he's the only one who feeds the ducks in the winter. Or how sometimes, there's so much you want to say, and then you end up saying nothing. Because everyone around you seems to get along with everyone else. You're the only one who asks the strange questions and notices the weird details about people and things, and no one else cares, and that's why no one understands you. Because you're the main character, and nothing you write about matters. Or maybe the words you scribble down are actually the only thing that matters. Maybe life's just a book after all.

Book The Recovering

Download or read book The Recovering written by Leslie Jamison and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of The Empathy Exams comes this transformative work showing that sometimes the recovery is more gripping than the addiction. With its deeply personal and seamless blend of memoir, cultural history, literary criticism, and reportage, The Recovering turns our understanding of the traditional addiction narrative on its head, demonstrating that the story of recovery can be every bit as electrifying as the train wreck itself. Leslie Jamison deftly excavates the stories we tell about addiction -- both her own and others' -- and examines what we want these stories to do and what happens when they fail us. All the while, she offers a fascinating look at the larger history of the recovery movement, and at the complicated bearing that race and class have on our understanding of who is criminal and who is ill. At the heart of the book is Jamison's ongoing conversation with literary and artistic geniuses whose lives and works were shaped by alcoholism and substance dependence, including John Berryman, Jean Rhys, Billie Holiday, Raymond Carver, Denis Johnson, and David Foster Wallace, as well as brilliant lesser-known figures such as George Cain, lost to obscurity but newly illuminated here. Through its unvarnished relation of Jamison's own ordeals, The Recovering also becomes a book about a different kind of dependency: the way our desires can make us all, as she puts it, "broken spigots of need." It's about the particular loneliness of the human experience-the craving for love that both devours us and shapes who we are. For her striking language and piercing observations, Jamison has been compared to such iconic writers as Joan Didion and Susan Sontag, yet her utterly singular voice also offers something new. With enormous empathy and wisdom, Jamison has given us nothing less than the story of addiction and recovery in America writ large, a definitive and revelatory account that will resonate for years to come.
