Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing look inside a controversial movement They live in the suburbs of Tennessee and Indiana. They fought in Vietnam and Desert Storm. They speak about an older, better America, an America that once was, and is no more. And for the past decade, they have come to the U.S. / Mexico border to hunt for illegal immigrants. Who are the Minutemen? Patriots? Racists? Vigilantes? Harel Shapira lived with the Minutemen and patrolled the border with them, seeking neither to condemn nor praise them, but to understand who they are and what they do. Challenging simplistic depictions of these men as right-wing fanatics with loose triggers, Shapira discovers a group of men who long for community and embrace the principles of civic engagement. Yet these desires and convictions have led them to a troubling place. Shapira takes you to that place—a stretch of desert in southern Arizona, where he reveals that what draws these men to the border is not simply racism or anti-immigrant sentiments, but a chance to relive a sense of meaning and purpose rooted in an older life of soldiering. They come to the border not only in search of illegal immigrants, but of lost identities and experiences. Now with a new afterword by the author, Waiting for José brings understanding to a group of people in search of lost identities and experiences.

Book The Minutemen and Their World

Download or read book The Minutemen and Their World written by Robert A. Gross and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bancroft Prize–winning classic of American history now in a revised and expanded edition with a new preface and afterword by the author. On April 19, 1775, the American Revolution began at the Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts. The “shot heard round the world” catapulted this sleepy New England town into the height of revolutionary fervor, and Concord went on to become the intellectual capital of the new republic. The town—future home to Emerson, Thoreau, and Hawthorne—soon came to symbolize devotion to liberty, intellectual freedom, and the stubborn integrity of rural life. In The Minutemen and Their World, Robert A. Gross has written a remarkably subtle and detailed reconstruction of the lives and community of this special place, and a compelling interpretation of the American Revolution as a social movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: March 12, 1985, Columbia, Mississippi, Police Station Dispatch Office, 8:58 PM "This is James Jackson at Red Carpet Motors. We've been robbed. My wife is hurt bad. I need an ambulance." Thus began, a yearlong investigation and prosecution into Mary Nell Jackson's killer, beginning with a crime scene containing no eyewitness, no murder weapon, very little physical evidence, and no motive. When the investigation began to focus on the husband, town and church, loyalties split . . . And when fate provided a clue, the question was whether this would be enough to prove murder against a man who represented the "model" church and community leader. The investigators and the prosecution had little choice but to use this clue, along with some unconventional investigation and trial tactics, to prove the truth to a jury and a small community torn by grief. This story is taken from the original files of law enforcement, the prosecution, the trial courts, and media coverage surrounding the death of Mary Nell Jackson. It is the inside story as told by the district attorney, Richard Douglass, who prosecuted a great deceiver, a man with a hidden second life . . . The Three-Minute Man.

  • Pages : 120 pages

Download or read book The Minute Man written by Michael Maddox and published by Michael Maddox. This book was released on 2013-01-07 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Minute Man is a fictionalized account of the events leading up to, and including, the Battles of Lexington and Concord which took place in April 1775. This story focuses on three sets of players. First, there were the scheming Boston Sons of Liberty, including Sam Adams, Paul Revere and Joseph Warren, which drove the authorities to distraction and missteps. The second group is the British Army, officers and men, led by General Gage who became the pointed end of London’s stick. The last actors, for whom the book is named, are the townsfolk and farmers who made up the bulk of armed resistance the first day of the fighting. Both the agitators and the army brass had their vested interests, but the common man—both enlisted soldiers and villagers—bore the inevitable brunt of the conflict. The tale is one of not only of revolution, but of a nascent civil war, as a brother turns on his brother, and a wife betrays her husband. It is an emotional portrayal of what did, and what might have, happened in the character’s lives over those days. While the book starts with the Boston Tea Party, it was unclear to the participants at the time that it would be the opening scene of the Revolutionary War, which did not cease till many years later in the South.

Book excerpt: This book is a first-hand account from the frontlines, and what it says will shock you. Jim Gilchrist teams up with Jerome Corsi, the co-author of Unfit for Command - the book that derailed John Kerry's presidential campaign - to describe in vivid detail how the nation's southern border has disintegrated into a Wild West of human trafficking, drug smuggling, and violent gangs. Readers of this disturbing and timely book will learn how: Mexico encourages the mass emigration of millions of impoverished peasants, and why the Mexican government will stop at nothing to keep the border open; The Catholic Church uses its power and influence to subvert immigration laws, and why Church leaders are speaking out in favor of amnesty; American taxpayers are forced to pay the staggering economic and cultural price tag of illegal immigration, and why our government wants to keep the true costs hidden from the public. Like their Revolutionary War predecessors who defended America against a hostile foreign power, today's Minutemen have risen up to answer their nation's call against another invasion. Minutemen is their story, as well as an urgent call to arms to all of their countrymen.
