Book Who the Hell is Alice My Story Alice Barry

Download or read book Who the Hell is Alice My Story Alice Barry written by Alice Barry and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Her face is simply unmistakable as the council house based brothel madam, Lillian, in Channel 4's long running brilliant cult drama 'Shameless,' based on a Manchester sink estate. By her own admission not exactly the Bridget Bardot of the North West, she is fiercely and unapologetically proud of her working class roots and the many obstacles she has overcome in forging an acting career. In her long awaited autobiography she details her almost barbaric treatment as a youngster during her formative school years at the hands of bigoted bullies, both pupils and teachers alike. She describes how one day after being beaten for being a Catholic in the morning and beaten for being a protestant in the afternoon, she eventually fought back. It was a turning point in Alice's life. She became a rebel and beat one of the bullies so badly she ended up in hospital. Not surprisingly they never bothered her again. Who the Hell is Alice? is deep and personal, warts and all. The humour of Alice Barry shines like a beacon on every page but she also shares with the reader her real life tragedies such as the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of her brother Tommy and her husband Terry. Her current relationship with her partner Jeff is also well documented too. They love and respect each other, of that there is no doubt. The only slight twist in their magical bond is that Jeff is gay and their relationship is purely a plutonic one. Alice also takes the reader onto the set of Shameless. The long running Channel 4 show is quite simply a phenomenon and has been an on-going part of her life for over nine years. Alice talks at length about the entire team and her special relationship with Sally Carmen (Kelly Maguire) David Threlfall (Frank Gallagher) Jack Deam (Marty) and Elliott Tittensor (Carl Gallagher.)

Book excerpt: “[Ballingrud's] evocative and strangely beautiful.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Nathan Ballingrud is one of my favorite contemporary authors and any time he’s got a new book out I run to the front of the line. His work is elegant and troublingly, wonderfully disturbing.”—Victor LaValle, award–winning author of The Changeling “Nathan Ballingrud's brilliant fiction brims with imagination, integrity (I do not use that term lightly), and an authentic world-weary dread that bores directly into your heart. With Wounds you'll gladly follow Nathan to Hell and (maybe) back.”—Paul Tremblay, award-winning author of The Cabin at the End of the World and A Head Full of Ghosts “Nathan Ballingrud is one of my favorite short fiction writers.” —Jeff VanderMeer, New York Times bestselling author of Annihilation and Borne “Stretch[es] the boundaries of the genre by employing these grand, horrific worlds. “The Butcher’s Table” reminds me of the first time I read Clive Barker’s “In the Hills, the Cities.” It’s horrifying, but there’s beauty.” —The New York Times “In only two slender collections, Nathan Ballingrud has emerged as one of the field’s most accomplished short story writers.” —The Washington Post “Ballingrud’s work isn’t like any other.”—Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing “One of the most disquieting and memorable short story collections to come out this year.”—The New York Review of Books “Wounds: Six Stories from the Border of Hell is without a doubt one of the best, most accomplished horror collections in recent memory.”—Hellnotes “Wounds will no doubt be remembered as one of the most disquieting and memorable short story collections to come out this year.”—New York Journal of Books “There’s enough nightmare fuel here to inspire weeks of insomnia — all told with an even hand with a penchant for precise storytelling. How else do you chart the furthest reaches of the uncanny?”—Tobias Carroll, Vol. 1 Brooklyn A gripping collection of six stories of terror—including the novella “The Visible Filth,” the basis for the upcoming major motion picture—by Shirley Jackson Award–winning author Nathan Ballingrud, hailed as a major new voice by Jeff VanderMeer, Paul Tremblay, and Carmen Maria Machado—“one of the most heavyweight horror authors out there” (The Verge). In his first collection, North American Lake Monsters, Nathan Ballingrud carved out a distinctly singular place in American fiction with his “piercing and merciless” (Toronto Globe and Mail) portrayals of the monsters that haunt our lives—both real and imagined: “What Nathan Ballingrud does in North American Lake Monsters is to reinvigorate the horror tradition” (Los Angeles Review of Books). Now, in Wounds, Ballingrud follows up with an even more confounding, strange, and utterly entrancing collection of six stories, including one new novella. From the eerie dread descending upon a New Orleans dive bartender after a cell phone is left behind in a rollicking bar fight in “The Visible Filth” to the search for the map of hell in “The Butcher’s Table,” Ballingrud’s beautifully crafted stories are riveting in their quietly terrifying depictions of the murky line between the known and the unknown.

Book Half Truths and Krazy Short Stories

Download or read book Half Truths and Krazy Short Stories written by Edgar Swift and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-05-04 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents several chapters written by this author using the pseudonym Ole Ed. The impetus for my writing these stories was to reduce the burden that I experienced from a very hectic air travel schedule that I endured before finally retiring from the Fortune 5 corporation that I was employed by for thirty years! I became bored from picking up the same ole magazines on airplanes and reading the same ole stuff. I hope that these stories will provide you with a little bit of light, pleasurable reading during your travels to places afar that I probably no longer yearn to go to. All the stories presented in this book are based partially on my actual life experiences, hence, the title HalfaEUR"Truths . . . I have tried to word the title of each story in a way that will not give you a hint of how that story will end. Have fun, and guess your heart out!

Book The 50s The Story of a Decade

Download or read book The 50s The Story of a Decade written by The New Yorker Magazine and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engrossing anthology assembles classic New Yorker pieces from a complex era enshrined in the popular imagination as the decade of poodle skirts and Cold War paranoia—featuring contributions from Philip Roth, John Updike, Nadine Gordimer, and Adrienne Rich, along with fresh analysis of the 1950s by some of today’s finest writers. The New Yorker was there in real time, chronicling the tensions and innovations that lay beneath the era’s placid surface. In this thrilling volume, classic works of reportage, criticism, and fiction are complemented by new contributions from the magazine’s present all-star lineup of writers. The magazine’s commitment to overseas reporting flourished in the 1950s, leading to important dispatches from East Berlin, the Gaza Strip, and Cuba during the rise of Castro. Closer to home, the fight to break barriers and establish a new American identity led to both illuminating coverage, as in a portrait of Thurgood Marshall at an NAACP meeting in Atlanta, and trenchant commentary, as in E. B. White’s blistering critique of Senator Joe McCarthy. The arts scene is recalled in critical writing rarely reprinted, including Wolcott Gibbs on My Fair Lady, Anthony West on Invisible Man, and Philip Hamburger on Candid Camera. Also featured are great early works from Philip Roth and Nadine Gordimer, as well as startling poems by Theodore Roethke and Anne Sexton, among others. Completing the panoply are insightful and entertaining new pieces by present-day New Yorker contributors examining the 1950s through contemporary eyes. The result is a vital portrait of American culture as only one magazine in the world could do it. Including contributions by Elizabeth Bishop • Truman Capote • John Cheever • Roald Dahl • Janet Flanner • Nadine Gordimer • A. J. Liebling • Dwight Macdonald • Joseph Mitchell • Marianne Moore • Vladimir Nabokov • Sylvia Plath • V. S. Pritchett • Adrienne Rich • Lillian Ross • Philip Roth • Anne Sexton • James Thurber • John Updike • Eudora Welty • E. B. White • Edmund Wilson And featuring new perspectives by Jonathan Franzen • Malcolm Gladwell • Adam Gopnik • Elizabeth Kolbert • Jill Lepore • Rebecca Mead • Paul Muldoon • Evan Osnos • David Remnick Praise for The 50s “Superb: a gift that keeps on giving.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “[A] magnificent anthology.”—Literary Review
