Book Me N Alvin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thad Box
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2001-11-26
  • ISBN : 1401029647
  • Pages : 163 pages

Download or read book Me N Alvin written by Thad Box and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-11-26 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essayist and poet Thad Box experienced poverty first hand as a small boy living on a tenant farm. His poems present a child's eye view of one of our country's major events. The Great Depression spawned a social and economic upheaval in American culture as great as the revolution that formed this country. With the possible exception of the Civil War, no event in our nation's history has been as significant. The people who lived through the Depression become fewer with each passing year. Most who were adults at the beginning of the depression are gone. Box's poems make history live through the tales of children. "Me 'n' Alvin" describes the joys and disappointments of a ten-year-old boy during the time between the stock market crash of 1929 and the attack on Pearl Harbor. Although it is about sharecropper children in the Central Texas Hill Country, it captures the hopes and dreams of poor kids everywhere who do not consider themselves poor. Box tells the stories through a series of narrative poems written in the vernacular, yet poetic voice of Hill Country people. He describes life of subsistence farmers and the heartbreak of being displaced by well meaning New Deal government programs. Games played by children, the wonder of becoming "rich" when the make-work dam construction pays 40 cents an hour, Sunday dinners, and celebrations are told through his eyes and with the voice of a precocious child.: Doing what hound dogs do or finding out about birds and bees are woven into the poems. Learning the facts of life was not just about sex. It often involved becoming aware of the problems of grownups: the lack of money, the stress of being put off the farm, the knowledge that the family was poor. But the joys of a child exploring his poverty cocoon, the love of his parents, the thrill of learning all become part of understanding the facts of life. A child's curiosity about sex is not ignored. The boys knew about billy goats, Maltese jacks, and roosters because their function on the farm was part of the natural process. But making the transition from understanding animal breeding to girls was an unending mystery. The book covers the time from shortly after Franklin Roosevelt's election in the 1930s until the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was a time when many farm families were moving to California in search of a better life. Hobos and gypsies traveled from town to town in search of food. Soup kitchens filled less than basic needs of major cities. Obituaries of people who lived through these times fill newspapers across this land. This book is unique in that it captures a child's view of one of the major social changes of our country. The poems teach history with a smile.

Book excerpt: Written with a movie in mind, Aurona is stunningly visual, rich with detailed illustrations and a quickly developing, suspenseful storyline. A technological feast for ages 12 and up, it feeds the universal human quest for the New and Different. Our present space telescopes beg these questions: Is there another planet out there in far better shape than the Earth? Can the atmosphere be in pristine condition with a carefully managed, yet untouched wilderness? Aurona, far more technologically advanced the Earth, offers the possibility that this might actually be possible. A paradise? Utopia? The story unfolds… While exploring the jungle in the caldera of an extinct volcano, a boy and his grandfather discover the entrance to an alien outpost. A tripwire triggers a huge block of stone to roll back into a wall, revealing a spiral staircase that leads down into an underground vault. As they enter, they’re shocked to find an enormous dome lined with heavily embossed sheets of gold. More importantly, a star map is imbedded into a stunning, blue glass floor, its infrared tracery pointing the way to another world. Unfortunately, the chamber’s fusion reactor has reawakened after thousands of years and the room is about to self-destruct. In a burst of speed, they gather all the gold they can carry, shove it into their knapsacks and dive out of the entrance just as the great vault implodes. Years pass. Out of college, the teenager gets some unexpected news: his extravagantly wealthy grandfather has died, and the TV and Internet coverage reveals there’ll be an elaborate funeral for him in the Capitol Rotunda. Through a daringly clever ruse, the boy receives a secret package: three holographic discs and the keys to a starship. After an urgent message instructs him to assemble a crew, Aurona’s action-packed, stumbling voyage ensues. Reaching the planet, they find it completely surrounded by an electrically charged, golden shield. It takes some clever, innovative trickery with tiny surveillance robotoids to get them through, and a whole, different ecosystem surrounds them: they see that gold is everywhere, even permeating the atmosphere. Gargantuan trees can draw gold out of the ground, there are huge night-stalking insects with bioluminescent searchlights, saber toothed beasts can throw mind-stuns to paralyze their prey, and there are odd, fragile, gas-bag creatures floating around. Unfortunately, things have grown complicated: an alien stowaway has been hidden aboard in a sleep pod. It hadn’t been plugged into the ship’s mainframe and the timing for its opening sequence is way off. After two suspenseful months of waiting, the crazed alien awakens in a rage, summoning more of his plasmorphic kind. They steal the starship and hold many of the crew as hostages, forcing them to dig all the gold the ship can carry. The alien boasts to return one day with a vast army to attack and plunder Aurona. The boy, now maturing into a resourceful young leader, has other plans...

Book Waldo Emerson My Grandfather and Me

Download or read book Waldo Emerson My Grandfather and Me written by Eugene X. Perticone and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-04-09 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Matthew is almost twelve years old, his grandfather, Sam, decides its time for him to get to know the work of Ralph Waldo Emerson, a sage the boy has never heard of. During their frequent meetings, Sam introduces Matthew to Emersons sophisticated notions and wisdoms. Emersons words, delivered in the essay Self-Reliance and in other writings, teach Matthew practical concepts that give greater meaning to life and help him successfully overcome difficulties for himself and his family. At the same time, Sam and Matthew develop a very special and loving relationship. In Waldo Emerson, My Grandfather, and Me, author Eugene X. Perticone shows that although circumstances and the problems of life may seem different and more complex in our time, the best solutions havent changed much. The wisdom of Ralph Waldo Emerson as it pertains to both worldly and spiritual matters is shown to be as relevant today as in the time it was written, and a grandfathers approach to teaching this to his grandson results in happiness for both of them as well as many others in the boys life.
