Download or read book Rock The Primary Text Developing a Musicology of Rock written by Allan F Moore and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001: Revised to respond to developments within the discipline and with new material added to reflect the author's and others' further work in this field, this book's focus remains British rock. Its aims are: to establish analytic criteria for rock as a whole; to provide a historicized discussion of British rock; and to enable a critical re-evaluation of progressive rock itself. This book has been written in the conviction that, with "rock" criticism and commentary in general, insufficient attention is paid to what the author calls the "primary text" - that constituted by the sounds themselves, as opposed to commentaries on them. In the first chapter, Allan Moore argues for the development of a musicology particular to rock, which may share aspects of established musicology, but which acknowledges that rock differs in its purposes, publics and aims. The primary elements of such a musicology are then laid out in Chapter 2. Next, there are critiques of rock myths of authenticity and unmediated expression. These are centred on the ideological appropriation of the ethos and techniques of the "blues", and extend to discussions of a range of more recent rock styles. The crucial role played by authenticity in the reception of rock is considered at more length in Chapter 5.
Download or read book Elvis Costello Joni Mitchell and the Torch Song Tradition written by Larry David Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-04-30 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The torch song has long been a vehicle for expression—perhaps American song's most sheerly visceral one. Two artists in particular have built upon this tradition to express their own unique outlooks on their lives and the world around them. Joni Mitchell, Elvis Costello, and the Torch Song Tradition combines biographical material, artist commentary, critical interpretation, and selected exemplars of the writers' work to reveal the power of authorship and the creative drive necessary to negotiate an artistic vision in the complicated mechanisms of the commercial music industry. Author Larry David Smith, as in his Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and American Song, considers the complicated intersection of biography, creative philosophy, artistic imperative, and stylistic tendencies in the work of both Joni Mitchell and Elvis Costello—two songwriters with seemingly nothing in common, one famously confessional and one famously confrontational. Yet, as Smith shows so incisively, they are two personalities that prove fascinatingly complementary. Mitchell and Costello both yielded bodies of work that are cohesive, coherent, and rich in meaning. Both have made historic contributions to the singer-songwriter model, two rebellious respones to the creative and commercial compromises associated with their chosen field, and two distinct thematic responses to the torch song tradition. Smith examines these responses, offering a unique and invaluable exploration of the craft of two of the last century's most towering musical figures.
Download or read book Only Good Things written by Debra A. Baker and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years ago, when I began writing this as my very first book, I thought long and hard about the interviews I would need to conduct to get the story across to readers. What I didn’t realize is that no interviews would be necessary. God would provide enough material in my own life for my story. Good, bad, indifferent…didn’t matter. There are so many good things in life that happen to each of us. However, life is not designed for good things only. Hardships and heartaches also happen. Why? They must; otherwise we are not living life to its full potential. And suffering, as hard as it is, brings us closer to God…always.

Download or read book The Songs of Joni Mitchell written by Anne Karppinen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unorthodox musician from the start, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell's style of composing, performing, and of playing (and tuning) the guitar is unique. In the framework of sexual difference and the gendered discourses of rock this immediately begs the questions: are Mitchell's songs specifically feminine and, if so, to what extent and why? Anne Karppinen addresses this question focusing on the kind of music and lyrics Mitchell writes, the representation of men and women in her lyrics, how her style changes and evolves over time, and how cultural context affects her writing. Linked to this are the concepts of subjectivity and authorship: when a singer-songwriter sings a song in the first person, about whom are they actually singing? Mitchell offers a fascinating study, for the songs she writes and sings are intricately woven from the strands of her own life. Using methods from critical discourse analysis, this book examines recorded performances of songs from Mitchell's first nine studio albums, and the contemporary reviews of these albums in Anglo-American rock magazines. In one of the only books to discuss Mitchell's recorded performances, with a focus that extends beyond the seminal album Blue, Karppinen explores the craft of Mitchell's songwriting and her own attitudes towards it, as well as the dynamics and politics of rock criticism in the 1960s and 1970s more generally.

Download or read book Here Come the Brides written by Audrey Bilger and published by Seal Press. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage today isn't what it used to be: for better, not for worse. As same-sex weddings are becoming more common, the classic love-story happy ending is taking on a decidedly new twist, everyone has a fresh role to play, and supporters and opponents of gay marriage alike are finding themselves in the midst of a revolution that's redefining marriage—both as a personal choice and as an institution—as we know it. In Here Come the Brides!, editors Audrey Bilger and Michele Kort gather together the voices of women taking part in-and shaping-this major historical shift. Representing a diversity of points of view in terms of race, class, ethnicity, and gender identification, this collection of essays, stories, and visual images takes a multidimensional look at how opening up the traditional order of "man and wife" to include the possibility of "wife and wife" is altering our social landscape. From wedding pictures and images of protest signs to comical anecdotes and sober philosophical analyses, Here Come the Brides! is an exploration of how the legalization of same-sex marriages has irrevocably changed the way lesbians think about their unions and their lives-and a celebration of the dream of lesbian happily-ever-afters.
