Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Years Musical Recollections, Vol. 2 It would serve no good turn further to enter into the private history Of this musical event, with all its loops and turns - to recall the green-room tales and their contradictions, which agitated those who are concerned in such matters. - It is enough to have lived for a while in the caldron Of Scandal, without stirring its waters afresh. - The new theatre did not tumble down like a house of cards. The Officers of Justice did not enter with writs, at the eleventh hour, to lay the strong hand of prohibition on any acting or singing being attempted in an establish ment already known, said its solvent well-wishers, to be insolvent. The Lord Chamberlain did not refuse his license, as it was promised for him that he should do. The singers were forthcoming on the day of rehearsal, which took place in the midst of scafl'oldings, artificers, and every other apparent interruption and Sign Of incompleteness. At last, on the 6th of April, the Royal Italian Opera opened its doors with a fine performance of Semiramide, in which, besides the excitement of the first night of a new undertaking, there was an attraction of late increasingly rare - the appearance of a new singer of the highest class, Mademoiselle Alboni. Book Giovanni Battista Rubini and the Bel Canto Tenors

Download or read book Giovanni Battista Rubini and the Bel Canto Tenors written by Dan H. Marek and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giovanni Battista Rubini (1794-1854) was a legendary tenor and the first 19th-century non-castrati male singer to become an international star of opera. The previous two centuries had been the era of the castrati, with tenors and basses relegated to character and supporting roles in the operas of their time. Rubini stood apart because he not only matched the castrati in coloratura and pathos, but he also had an extraordinarily high voice. With Rubini’s rise, and in his wake, several tenors came to sing roles written specifically for them by Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and many other lesser-known bel canto composers. Signaling the end of the dominance of castrati on stage, this period would last some 40 years until the advent of Grand Opera, Wagner, and Verdi and the appearance of the first so-called High C from the chest by Gilbert-Louis Duprez in 1837. Since then, the accepted tenor sound has followed the tradition epitomized by Enrico Caruso and, in our own era, Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. Many composers, conductor, and performers would come to regard bel canto dramatic operas as decorative and vapid until Maria Callas and Tulio Serafin demonstrated the heights this genre of opera could reach. However, opera directors and opera performers of late who have expressed an interest in reviving selected masterpieces from the bel canto tradition have found themselves confronted with the problem of locating tenors versed in the vocal techniques necessary to carry the high tessituras. In Giovanni Battista Rubini and the Bel Canto Tenors: History and Technique, Dan H. Marek explores the extraordinary life of Rubini in order to frame this special period in the history of opera and connect the technique of the castrati who were among Rubini’s instructors. Drawing on the work of Berton Coffin, Marek offers long-sought answers to the challenges presented by high tessitura of bel canto operas for tenors. To further assist working singers, Giovanni Battista Rubini and the Bel Canto Tenors includes over 60 pages of exercises written by Rubini himself before 1840, which Marek, for the first time ever has adapted to acoustical phonetics. Professional singers, teachers and their students, vocal coaches, and opera conductors will find this work indispensable as the only English-language work on high tessitura for tenor and soprano singing.

Book Memoirs of an American Prima Donna Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memoirs of an American Prima Donna Classic Reprint written by Clara Louise Kellogg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of an American Prima Donna HE name of Clara Louise Kellogg is known to the immediate generation chiefly as an echo of the past. Yet only thirty years ago it was written of her, enthusiastically but truthfully, that no living singer needs a biography less than Miss Clara Louise Kellogg; and nowhere in the world would a biography of her be so superfluous as in America, where her name is a house hold word and her illustrious career is familiar in all its triumphant details to the whole people. The past to which she belongs is therefore recent; it is the past of yesterday only, thought of tenderly by our fathers and mothers, spoken of reverently as a poignant phase of their own ephemeral youth, one of their sweet lavender memories. The pity is (although this is itself part of the evanescent charm), that the singer's best creations can live but in the hearts of a people, and the fame of sound is as fugitive as life itself. A record of such creations is, however, possible and also enduring; while it is also necessary for a just estimate of the development of civilisations. As such, this record of her musical past - presented by Clara Louise Kellogg herself - will have a place in the annals of the evolution of musical art on the North American continent long after every vestige of fluttering personal reminiscence has vanished down the ages. A word of appreciation with regard to the preparation of this record is due to John Jay Whitehead, Jr., whose diligent chronological labours have materially assisted the editor. Clara Louise Kellogg came from New England stock of English heritage. She was named after Clara Novello. Her father, George Kellogg, was an inventor of various machines and instruments and, at the time of her birth, was principal of Sumter Academy, Sumter ville, S. C. Thus the famous singer was acclaimed in later years not only as the Star of the North (the réle of Catherine in Meyerbeer's opera of that name being one of her achievements) but also as the lone star of the South in the operatic world. She first sang publicly in New York in 1861 at an evening party given by Mr. Edward Cooper, the brother of Mrs. Abram Hewitt. This was the year of her début as Gilda in Verdi's opera of Rigoletto at the Academy of Music in New York City. When she came before her country men as a singer, she was several decades ahead of her musical public, for she was a lyric artist as well as a singer. America was not then producing either singers or lyric artists; and in fact we were, as a nation, but just getting over the notion that America could not produce great voices. We held a very firm contempt for our own facilities, our knowledge, and our taste in musical matters. If we did discover a rough diamond, we had to send it to Italy to find out if it were of the first water and to have it polished and set. Nothing was so absolutely necessary for our self-respect as that some American woman should arise with sufficient American talent and bravery to prove beyond all cavil that the country was able to produce both singers and artists.
