Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a critical study of French and British art and written texts (poetry, literature, travel accounts, art criticism) -- orientalist works about the harem produced in the period from 1800-1875. Original readings are provided for over 150 harem pictures, from well-known salon paintings to rarely published erotic popular prints and book illustrations. Multiple Wives, Multiple Pleasures examines these works closely, often establishing fresh contexts for many of the more well-known nineteenth-century harem pictures, and often providing a consideration of lesser-known harem pictures that have been rarely published until now.
Download or read book Gendering Orientalism written by Reina Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to most cultural histories of imperialism, which analyse Orientalist images of rather than by women, Gendering Orientalism focuses on the contributions of women themselves. Drawing on the little-known work of Henriette Browne, other `lost' women Orientlist artists and the literary works of George Eliot, Reina Lewis challenges masculinist assumptions relating to the stability and homogeneity of the Orientalist gaze. Gendering Orientalism argues that women did not have a straightforward access to an implicitly nale position of western superiority, Their relationship to the shifting terms of race, nation and gender produced positions from which women writers and artists could articulate alternative representations of racial difference. It is this different, and often less degrading, gaze on the Orientalized `Other' that is analysed in this book. By revealing the extent of women's involvement in the popular field of visual Orientalism and highlighting the presence of Orientalist themes in the work of Browne, Eliot and Charlotte Bronte, reina Lewis uncovers women's roles in imperial culture and discourse. Gendering Orientalism will appeal to students, lecturers and researchers in cultural studies, literature, art history, women's studies and anthropology.

H. Kibrizli-Mehemet-Pasha That evening proved an eventful one. Amongst the guests there was a gentleman, lately arrived in Constantinople, who had been in the suite of Lord Byron during his sojourn in Greece. He was a tall, fine-looking man, of distinguished manners, intellectual, and a good linguist, speaking Greek almost like a native. Within a brief period, he asked my mother's consent to become my suitor. She at first hesitated, an account Of his being a Protestant, but eventually, acceding to his repeated wishes, we were married soon afterwards by a priest Of the Greek Church, my husband having a dislike to the ceremony being performed by a Catholic priest. This union, contracted so hastily, was not Of long duration. There existed no sym pathy between us, either in taste, temper, or habits. My husband was a serious, stern, and learned man, and I was a giddy, uneducated girl of fifteen the disparity in our respective ages also contributed towards estrangement, and at the expiration of five years we mutually agreed on being divorced. Download or read book Performing the Body Performing the Text written by Amelia Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-12 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the new performativity in art theory and practice, examining ways of rethinking interpretive processes in visual culture. Since the 1960s, visual art practices - from body art to minimalism - have taken contemporary art outside the museum and gallery; by embracing theatricality and performance and exploding the boundaries set by traditional art criticism. The contributors argue that interpretation needs to be recognised as much more dynamic and contingent. Offering its own performance script, and embracing both canonical fine artists such as Manet, De Kooning and Jasper Johns, and performance artists such as Vito Acconci and Gunter Brus, this book offers radical re-readings of art works and points confidently towards new models for understanding art.
