Book Thirty Years in the Canadian North West Classic Reprint

Download or read book Thirty Years in the Canadian North West Classic Reprint written by James Woodsworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Years in the Canadian North-West Dr. Woodsworth has no tales of bloody Indian warfare to relate, but he has stories of heroism to tell which lie at the very foun dation of empire in a land of immense dis tances, incomprehensible richness and variety of resources, and which is destined to be the home of uncounted millions of the most virile race the world has yet produced. His work will contribute material for the future historian and give a touch of inspira tion to the consecrated ambassador of Christ. In his arduous labors he was sustained by a prophet's vision of the possibilities of this continent-wide Dominion of Canada, and of the organizing strategy by which her riches will, with increasing lavishness, be dis tributed for the benefit of the whole world. Book Six Years in the Canadian North West Classic Reprint

Download or read book Six Years in the Canadian North West Classic Reprint written by Jean D'Artigue and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Years in the Canadian North-West This Book, which I dedicate to the Canadian Public, is not a work of fiction, but is purely historical. In writing it, elegance of style has not been studied, but rather a simple relation of facts as they occur. It may be wanting in interest to the lover of imaginary adventure, but to those who love the truth, I trust it will be found sufficiently interesting to repay a perusal. My object in undertaking this work is not to gain notoriety, but to furnish the Canadian Public with an account, not yet given by any writer, of the object of the organization of the North-West Mounted Police Force, the trials, privations, and adventures which they encountered, and the results of the expedition. Little by little the angry red faded out Of Peter's cheeks and neck, and his forehead smoothed itself. Stealing a glance at young Ambrose, the blue eyes began to twinkle. This book was released on 1998 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays presents a variety of scholarly explorations of the nature and role of the Mounties in the Prairie Provinces from the formation of the North West Mounted Police in 1873-74 to its transformation into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1919-20. The essays are grouped into five broad themes: relations with First Nations; law enforcement; social issues, including relations with minority groups and labour movements; characteristics of the police force; and crisis and change (police-immigrant relations, response to labour unrest, and the origins of domestic intelligence and counter-subversion). An epilogue presents the case for the dramatic change of the force after 1919-20 and the new force's use of the positive image created by the old force.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Seven Years in Canada West, Vol. 1 of 2: Or the Experience of an Early Settler The climate of Canada West is healthier and really pleasanter than that of England or Ireland. The cold is bracing, and easily mitigated by good fires and warm clothing; but it is not so really chill ing as the damp atmosphere of the mother-country. Those who have not visited the Canadas are apt to endow the Upper Province with the severe climate of the Lower one, whereas that of Wes tern Canada is neither so extremely hot nor so cold as many districts of the United States. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Life as I Found It: Four Years' Homesteading in the North-West Territories Hese experiences of Canadian life have been lived through by settlers in the north-west Territories, during the years quoted, and are meant, not to deter others from making a trial of the kind of life herein painted, but to point out to them more truly than has I believe hitherto been done, what that life really is, what each one must be prepared to do, and to suffer, if they wish to succeed. I have written few trivial details of daily life; every one can fill these in according to individual means, and aptitude. I have kept more to the broad lines, that will give a good idea of what is the truth about homesteading in Canada. This country has a great future before it most certainly, but only those who are healthy and strong, both mentally and physically, ought to be allowed to come out and help people it. The wild free life of the north-west, untrammelled by social fads, has its attractions, but to be able to really enjoy it, or I should be better within the truth if I write, to endure it, one must have plenty of grit. Book On Western Trails in the Early Seventies

Download or read book On Western Trails in the Early Seventies written by John Mcdougall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Western Trails in the Early Seventies: Frontier Pioneer Life in the Canadian North-West A genuine Canadian winter controlled the situation, especially from the Red Deer River northward and eastward. For this western country the snow was deep, and trails, when made, were easily filled and gone. As yet the population was small and hardly felt in the bigness of this immense area. The plainsmen tribes, among the Crees and Salteaux, were bunched in lots at the last points of timber, stretching out into Canada's big, treeless plain. The buffalo kept out beyond them, and, not withstanding the stress and storm of the rigorous winter, refused to come into the northern pastures on the Battle and Saskatchewan Rivers. With these Indians times were hard. They could not go far out on their hunts, lack of fuel and stormy weather forbidding this, and the few buffalo their braver and hardier hunters secured barely kept the camps in life. Under such conditions, all shared alike. It was either a feast or a famine that winter, largely the latter.
