Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Years Ago, or the Memoirs of a Water Drinker, Vol. 1 of 2 So much to prove that a novel may be new - now to show that although it is a fiction, it may be true. A novel is in its very nature a falsehood; yet if its author has the welfare of his fellow-creatures at heart, its substance and essence will be truth. Book The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong

Download or read book The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong written by JaHyun Kim Haboush and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-09-14 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Hyegyong's memoirs, which recount the chilling murder of her husband by his father, form one of the best known and most popular classics of Korean literature. From 1795 until 1805 Lady Hyegyong composed this masterpiece, depicting a court life Shakespearean in its pathos, drama, and grandeur. Presented in its social, cultural, and historical contexts, this first complete English translation opens a door into a world teeming with conflicting passions, political intrigue, and the daily preoccupations of a deeply intelligent and articulate woman. JaHyun Kim Haboush's accurate, fluid translation captures the intimate and expressive voice of this consummate storyteller. Reissued nearly twenty years after its initial publication with a new foreword by Dorothy Ko, The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong is a unique exploration of Korean selfhood and an extraordinary example of autobiography in the premodern era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fixed Period, Vol. 1 of 2: A Novel I think I must begin my story by explaining in moderate language a few of the manifest advantages which would attend the adoption of the Fixed Period in all countries. As far as the law went it was adopted in Britannula. Its adoption was the first thing discussed by our young Assembly, when we found ourselves alone; and though there were disputes on the subject, in none of them was Opposition made to the system. I myself, at the age of thirty, had been elected Speaker of that Parliament. But I was, nevertheless, able to discuss the merits of the bills in committee, and I did so with some enthusiasm. Thirty years have passed since, and my period is drawing nigh. But I am still as energetic as ever, and as as sured that the doctrine will ultimately prevail over the face of the civilised world, though I. Book Memoirs Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memoirs Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Almeric Fitzroy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs, Vol. 1 The voyage up the west coast of the peninsula was full of interest and charm, as our course lay near enough to take in much of its beauty, especially off the mouth of the Tagus with the historic Tower of Belem and the castled crag of Cintra over looking its gardens and orangeries. We entered the hill-girt Bay of Vigo, and lay for a couple of days with the beautiful prospect of its hinterland before our eyes. I made an excursion into the interior with some of my shipmates, a country rich in natural graces and peopled by as fine a race of men and women as I have seen in Europe; every woman had beauty, and both sexes were distinguished by a dignity of manner which bore the impress of good breeding. On leaving the bay we were hampered by fog, but Lord John extricated us from a critical situation without accident, though, as I was in my bath, I saw the Warrior's bowsprit above our stern walk. Later, when we were in the open sea, where distance was maintained by gunfire from the leading ship of each division, Lord John took the risk of changing course by signal, when it appeared as time passed that the port division, led by the Hercules (captain Howard), had not understood the order, and the attention of the ship was called to the lapse, this time with due effect, as, the fog lifting not long afterwards, the peccant division was seen bearing up on a course which in a few minutes would have brought it into the middle of the other lines, when disaster must have ensued. We reached Plymouth without further incident, where the Fleet broke up and I dis embarked. I parted from Buller with great regret, and saw little of him in after-years, but I recall his death at the close of a day's hunting, at the age of eighty. Book Memoirs of Joseph Sturge Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memoirs of Joseph Sturge Classic Reprint written by Henry Richard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Joseph Sturge The writer of the following work is by no means convinced that it is an unmixed advantage for the memoirs of an individual to be published very speedily after his death, especially if he were one who had taken any prominent part in connection with public affairs. Still, for the sake of others who may think differently, he cannot but regret the delay that has occurred in the appearance of this volume. But there were many reasons why it was out of his power to accomplish his task sooner. He was so placed that he could only work at it by snatches, in the intervals of official duties always exigent, and sometimes very urgent, which it was impossible for him to pretermit. The work itself, also, proved a much more serious one than he anticipated, when he first acceded to the request with which the family of Joseph Sturge honoured him, to prepare some memorial of the life and labours of his revered and beloved friend. Mr. Sturge was a man whose sympathies were so broad, and whose activities were so varied, that to tell intelligibly the story of his life it was necessary to understand something of most of the leading public events of the last thirty or forty years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arthur Mervyn, Vol. 2: Or Memoirs of the Year 1793 The appearance of pestilence, meanwhile, threw them into panic, and they hastened to remove from danger. Mrs. Villars appears to have been a woman of no ordi nary views. She stooped to the vilest means of amass ing money; but this money was employed to secure to herself and her daughters the benefits of independence. She purchased the house which she occupied in the city, and a mansion in the environs, well built and Splendidly furnished. To the latter, she and her family, of which the Italian girl was now a member, retired at the close of July. I have mentioned that the source of my intelligence was a kinsman, who had been drawn from the paths of sobriety and rectitude by the impetuosity of youthful passions. He had power to confess and deplore, but none to repair, his errors. One of these women held him by a Spell which he struggled in vain to dissolve, and by which, in Spite of resolutions and remorses, he was drawn to her feet, and made to sacrifice to her plea sure his reputation and his fortune. My house was his customary abode during those inter vals in which he was persuaded to pursue his profession. Some time before the infection began its progress, he had disappeared. No tidings were received of him, till a messenger arrived, entreating my assistance. I was conducted to the house of Mrs. Villars, in which I found no one but my kinsman. Here, it seems, he had im mured himself from my inquiries, and, on being seized by the reigning malady, had been deserted by the family, who, ere they departed, informed me by a messenger of his condition. Despondency combined with his disease to destroy him. Before he died, he informed me fully of the character of his betrayers. The late arrival, name, and personal con dition of Clemenza Lodi were related. Welbeck was not named, but was described in terms which, combined with the narrative of Mervyn, enabled me to recognise the paramour of Lucy Villars in the man whose crimes had been the principal theme of our discourse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Years in Hell, or the Confessions of a Drug Fiend An ancient author tells us somewhere with the tone of a pedagogue, that if you have not done anything worthy of being recorded, at least write something worthy of being read. It is a precept as beautiful as a diamond cut in England; but it cannot be applied to me, because I have written neither a novel nor the life of an illustrious character. Worthy or not, my life is my subject and my subject is my life. I have lived without dreaming that I Should take a fancy to write these confessions, and for that very reason the effort may claim from the reader an interest and a sympathy which they would not have Obtained.
