Book excerpt: Applying a comprehensive theory of character to the Gospel of John, Cornelis Bennema provides a fresh analysis of the characters and their responses to Jesus. While the majority of scholars view most Johannine characters as “flat,” Bennema demonstrates that many are complex, developing, and “round.” John’s broad array of characters correspond to people and their choices in real life in any culture and time. This book highlights how John’s Gospel seeks to challenge its readers about where they stand in relation to Jesus.

Book Love in the Gospel of John

Download or read book Love in the Gospel of John written by Francis J. SDB Moloney and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The command to love is central to the Gospel of John. Internationally respected scholar Francis Moloney offers a thorough exploration of this theme, focusing not only on Jesus's words but also on his actions. Instead of merely telling people that they must love one another, Jesus acts to make God's love known and calls all who follow him to do the same. This capstone work on John's Gospel uses a narrative approach to delve deeply into a theme at the heart of the Fourth Gospel and the life of the Christian church. Uniting rigorous exegesis with theological and pastoral insight, it makes a substantive contribution to contemporary Johannine scholarship.

Book excerpt: The Knowing the Bible series is a new resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. Each 12-week study leads participants through one book of the Bible and is made up of four basic components: (1) Reflection questions designed to help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” highlighting the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” showing how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” identifying how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from a wide array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on each and every page of the Bible. In this study of John’s Gospel, pastor and author Justin Buzzard helps readers understand the most theologically and philosophically profound account of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection in the New Testament. From revealing his cosmic identity as being with the Father “in the beginning,” to recounting the many miraculous signs attesting to his divinity, Buzzard illuminates John’s unmatched portrait of Jesus Christ, the unique Son of God, sent from heaven to save all who would turn to him. This insightful guide encourages Christians to worship Christ as Lord and follow him on mission to the world.

  • ISBN : 1525549952
  • Pages : 181 pages

Download or read book The Book of John written by John T. Long and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-05-03 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through his personal experiences John shows how he ultimately reached that place of peace and understanding that the world can neither give nor take away. Rather than meditating in a cave for twenty years, John has taken life head on in outrageous and sometimes unbelievable experiences that led to his awakening. This book reads like Hunter S. Thompson, Wayne Dyer and Jesus debating the meaning of life while bungee jumping blindfolded out of an Apache helicopter backwards and eating sushi together. The reader will be shocked, crying and then laughing uncontrollably over his strange and wonderful life full of hardship, supernatural experiences and spiritual epiphanies. The story moves along at a good pace, and just when the reader thinks that he/she knows what is going to happen next, something out of the blue occurs. Lots of suspense and surprise and wonder. John tells the story in the present tense. That gives it a sense of immediacy. The humorous touches throughout are great! They balance out the sad stories in a yin-yang kind of way. John’s voice in the prose is clear and persuasive. The reader can hear him saying these words sitting as if right next to them. Too many writers try to generate an “authorial” voice and end up sounding contrived. This book, on the other hand, clearly comes from the heart. It peels back layers of mystery yet never goes so far afield that the reader cannot follow. It is a journey the reader will love taking! This book will kick off the reader’s year in the right direction, leaving them feeling uplifted, lighter, and exploding into a million pieces of joy! • Identify subconscious programs running in the background of your mind. • Delete those programs. • Install a new operating system.
