In order to conform with other depart ments of the city and with the prevailing practice in libra ries, the Library Board has decided to make its year end with the calendar year. I have the honor to submit to you therefore the following brief report for the four months ending December 31, 1899. There were in the library and its various branches on the first day of September, 1899, volumes; there were added by purchase and gift during the period of four months from September 1 to December 31, 7, 316 volumes. There were issued for home use volumes, for refer ence use volumes, and there were visitors to the reference departments of the library during the same period.
