Book Our Hidden Settlement

Download or read book Our Hidden Settlement written by Mona Ballge Miron and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-08-07 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My journey goes back in time to Burton, Michigan’s history, when it was still the “Atherton Settlement” (1835-1855). Genesee County was formed in 1836, Michigan wasn’t even a state, until 1837. This was an exciting time for new families to settle here, finding land of their own, for the first time, freedom of religion and new adventures. I’ll be going through the yearly traditions behind the holidays and inventions along the way. I hope you enjoy my historical journey. Learning about the settlers on Thread River was a lot of fun, how they made the Atherton Trail; the four Atherton families working together to survive the cold winters. They built strong shelters, saved food and wood for the winter, with the help of the natives. In 1835 the Atherton Settlement was established; the Atherton families built a strong community over the next twelve months with thirty families. They built their homes, barns, wagons, three churches, a mill, and a trading post. The first school in the settlement was founded in 1836, the Atherton School, was a one room schoolhouse built on the corner of Atherton Trail and Center Road where the Burton Memorial Library sits now. Betsey Atherton was the first teacher. Throughout my research, we have a lot to be thankful for; especially the four Atherton men that were brave enough to stay and never give up on the settlement. As more people joined the settlement for the next 20 years, some had military backgrounds, and mostly coming from New York. With all manner of trades to prosper as the community, when more schools were needed, the farmers would build one in each area for the children. 1855 Atherton Settlement combined with other farms to become Burton Township; the second largest township, but without a post office so, “HIDDEN.”

Book excerpt: Twenty years after their college graduation, four Radcliffe girls return to their Harvard class reunion with mixed emotions and curiosity. It is the first time they have met since their hopeful student years, when each of them had wonderful dreams of becoming wives, mothers, and successful career women. But much has changed since the fifties, and the former classmates’ lives have been altered by events none of them could have foreseen. Humorous, heartwarming, often poignant and nostalgic, Class Reunion captures the spirit of the fifties brilliantly in contrast to the changing world the four girls have embraced, often with straightforward and pithy commentary on the social conventions of the past.

Book Incomplete Passes

Download or read book Incomplete Passes written by Linda Lange and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-08-25 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linda Lange turned twelve in 1959, the year Vince Lombardi arrived in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and changed everything. To say that Linda embraced the future kings of football would be an understatement. Her new passion transformed the way she viewed her hometown, the world, and most important, herself. In Incomplete Passes, Linda reflects on her coming-of-age journey as she grows into womanhood, experiences an unusual mid-life crisis, and embraces a friendship that spans fifty years. In 1961, four girls united by their love for the Packers formed a lasting bond that would survive distance, marriage, divorce, careers, and motherhood. In her entertaining and often witty memoir, Linda chronicles the years the infatuated teens followed their heroes around Green Bay and shares an intriguing glimpse into how the Packers helped all of them face their journeys through life with courage and humoreven as Linda dives into a mid-life calamity that somehow results in the creation of a musical comedy. Sometimes nostalgic, often wry, Incomplete Passes will resonate with anyone who fantasizes about romance with a celebrity, questions a life decision, or revels in the joys of reconnecting with old friends.

Book Teach the Free Man

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Nathaniel Malae
  • Publisher : Ohio University Press
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 0804010986
  • Pages : 269 pages

Download or read book Teach the Free Man written by Peter Nathaniel Malae and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelve stories in Teach the Free Man mark the impressive debut of Peter Nathaniel Malae. The subject of incarceration thematically links the stories, yet their range extends beyond the prison's barbed wire and iron bars. Avoiding sensationalism, Malae exposes the heart and soul in those dark, seemingly inaccessible corridors of the human experience. The stories, often raw and startlingly honest, are distinguished by the colloquial voices of California's prison inmates, who, despite their physical and cultural isolation, confront dilemmas with which we can all identify: the choice to show courage against peer pressure; the search for individual rights within a bureaucracy; and the desperate desire for honor in the face of great sacrifice. These stories present polished and poetic examples of finding something redemptive in the least among us. The book's epigraph by W. H. Auden, from which the book takes its title, exemplifies the spirit of these dynamic stories: In the deserts of the heart Let the healing fountain start. In the prison of his days Teach the free man how to praise.

Book The Fourth IIT

Download or read book The Fourth IIT written by Surya Pratap Mehrotra and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth IIT traces the historical evolution of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK), established fourth in the chronological ladder of IITs after the institutes at Kharagpur, Bombay and Madras. The early beginnings of IITK are explored, with the appointment of Dr P.K. Kelkar as its founder-director, its humble commencement in the temporary premises of Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI) and the initiation of a traditional BTech programme. We see how rapid transformations enabled the institute to introduce and nurture a new academic culture in the country, illustrated by the paradigm shift in higher technical education and the freshness of a new spirit in higher education in general—the spirit of IITK. An inventive approach to faculty appointments, student admissions and the development of a novel academic structure are some of the deeply appreciated attributes that IITK has epitomized—and striven for. The book also captures IITK in the present times, in its pursuit of continually improving the material life of its students, staff members and the faculty, and the veritably important role played by the alumni, and also sheds light on the ‘new vision’ of the institute. Expertly and lovingly written by IITK insiders and long-timers, The Fourth IIT is ideal for past and present students and educators, and for anyone interested in an in-depth analysis of one of the most beloved and respected academic institutions in the country.
