Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-First Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, 1909-1910 Mrs. M. C. Stevenson, ethnologist, continued her researches among the Pueblo tribes of the Rio Grande Valley, New Mexico, giving special attention to the T ewa group. As during the previous year, her studies were devoted chiefly to the pueblo of San Ildefonso, which offers better facilities for ethnologic investigation than the other Tewa villages, although her inquiries were extended also to Santa Clara and Nambe. Owing to the extreme conservatism of the Tewa people, Mrs. Stevenson found great difficulty in overcoming their prejudices against the study of the esoteric side of their life, but with patience she succeeded finally in gaining the warm friendship of many of the more influential headmen, and by this means was enabled to pursue a systematic study of the Tewa religion, sociology, and philosophy. Like most Indians, the Tewa are so secretive in everything that pertains to their worship that one not familiar with their religious life is readily mislead into believing that the ceremonies held in the public plazas of their villages which, with few exceptions, are more Mexican than Indian in outward character, consti tute the sole rites of these people, whereas it has been found that the Tewa still adhere as strictly to many of their ancient customs as before white men came among them, although some of their ceremonies are now less elaborate than they were in former times. While the creation myth of the San Ildefonso Indians differs somewhat from those of the Zuni and of other Pueblo tribes, it is the same in all essentials. According to their belief they were created in an undermost world, and passed through three other worlds before reaching this one. The tribe is divided into the Sun or Summer, and the Ice or Winter, people, the former having preceded the latter in their advent into this world, and their final home was reached on the western bank of the Rio Grande almost opposite the present pueblo. This place is marked by an extensive ruin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Second Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1910-1911 To form an impartial and correct judgment of the moral tone of the myths and legends of the American Indian, a distinction must be made between myths and legends on the one hand and tales and stories which are related primarily for the indecent coarseness of their thought and diction on the other; for herein lies the line of demarcation between narratives in which the rare casual references to indelicate matters are wholly a secondary consideration and not the motives of the stories, and those ribald tales in which the evident motive is merely to pander to depraved taste by detailing the coarse, the vulgar, and the filthy in life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-First Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1899-1900 The second act, a buffalo dance, was one of the best on this eventful night. Several men wearing helmets representing buffalo heads, with lateral horns and shaggy sheepskins. And wool painted black hanging down their backs, entered the room. They carried zigzag slats of wood, symbolic of lightning, and performed a characteristic dance to the beat of a drum. These buffalo personations were accompanied by a masked man and boy representing eagles, who danced before them, uttering calls in imitation of birds. The same buffalo dance, but more complicated, was celebrated earlier in the winter in the public plaza of W'alpi, at which time the men were accompanied by girls dressed as Buffalo maids who did not appear in the second act in the kivas. No representation of the eagles was seen in this public dance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Third Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology: To the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1911 1912 Late in August Mr. Hodge proceeded to New Mexico, and after a brief Visit to the archeological sites in the Rito de Los Frijoles, northwest of Santa Fe, where ex cavations were conducted in conjunction with the School of American Archaeology in 1911, continued to El Morro, or Inscription Rock, about 35 miles east of Zui'ii, for the purpose of making facsimile reproductions, or squeezes, of the Spanish inscriptions there, which have such an im portant bearing on the early history of the Pueblo tribes. El Morro is a picturesque eminence of sandstone rising from the sandy valley, and by reason of the former exist ence of a spring at its base, which is now merely a seep, it became an important camping place of the early Spaniards on their journeys to and from the Rio Grande and the Zufii and Hopi pueblo-s. The inscriptions of these early explorers were carved near the base of the rock, chiefly on the northern and southern sides of the highest portion of the mesa, and in the main consist of the names of the visitors with the dates of their visits, but in a number of cases elaborated with a more or less full statement of the object of the journey.
