Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Report From Select Committee on the Poor Law Amendment Act: With the Minutes of Evidence The Committee deliberated upon the calling for Returns; and the following Returns were ordered to be laid before the Committee: - 1. - A Return of the Number and Names and Residence, and Number of Children of Migrants, who have removed into the Manufacturing Districts, under the sanction of the Poor Law Commissioners, and the Parishes from which the Migrants were removed, and their Incomes previous to removal, together with their present Incomes, as far as they can be ascertained. 2. - A Return of the Number and Names and Residences, and Number of Children of Persons receiving Relief the Year preceding the formation of the Unions, and during the period that has elapsed since their formation, in the Unions of Ampthill, Bedford and Woburn; stating the Amount of Relief given in each instance, and the Date when the Relief was either increased, reduced, or withdraw; whether relieved in or out of the Workhouse, whether Able-bodied or Infirm, and the Average Price of Bread during each of the above Periods. 3. - A Return of the Number of Illegitimate Children that have been born in each Year in the Parishes in all the Unions in England and Wales since their formation; also, a Return of the Number of Illegitimate Children born in each Parish comprised in the Unions formed in the Year preceding their formation, and the Number of Affiliations in the Parishes, that have been taken out during the same period respectively. Also, a Similar Return of the Number of Affiliation from the Parishes of England and Wales, where the Poor Law Amendment Act has not yet come into operation.
