Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Year Language Reader The Language Readers are based upon the general theory that the work in reading and the work in language should be brought into close relationship. Arguments for this theory are presented in the prefaces to the higher books of the series. The main purpose of the reading work of the first two years must be to learn to read. By the general agreement of experience, nothing so hastens a child's progress as the desire to read and actual practice in reading. His desire to read is, in the first place, aroused by his teacher, and fostered by the pleasure he takes in the work. Not only the skill of the teacher, therefore, but the nature of the reading matter also, enters into the problem. For this reason, the editors and publishers have striven to make these books attractive to children in appearance and substance. There is no absolutely best way of beginning the work. One of the best methods is to engage the pupils in conversation regarding objects which appear early in the book, and then show them that the things which they have said can be said in another way than by speaking, viz. by writing them on the blackboard in script or in print, or in both. Book The Language Readers Primer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Language Readers Primer Classic Reprint written by Joseph H. Wade and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Language Readers Primer The child comes to school at the age of six or seven with a speaking vocabulary of several hundred words, say from five hundred to seven hundred words. This number will vary according to his environment and home influences. In teaching reading to these first year pupils, the aim should be to teach the child to recognize the symbols for the ideas which he already possesses. In other words, the aim is not to enlarge the child's speaking vocabulary but rather to convert it into a reading vocabulary. The child must learn to associate form and sound; the printed symbol must suggest an idea. Furthermore the child must learn to translate these symbols into oral language expressively rendered. If the class be one composed largely of children who speak little or no English, the problem is more complex. The teacher must build up an English vocabulary for the most commonplace actions and ideas, and, at the same time, must associate the spoken words which the pupils are learning day by day with the printed or written symbols. That is, the teacher must teach English speech as well as reading. In this Primer no particular method has been fol lowed absolutely. The aim has been to use the best features of the word, the look and say, the sen tence, the phonic, and the Gouin methods. Nouns, verbs, and adjectives in common use form the basis of the child's reading vocabulary. These should be taught as sight words. As an introduction to the work in reading, such commands as stand, face, etc., which are at first given orally by the teacher, may be written on the board and the children directed to obey them. The first sentences in this Primer direct the performance of certain actions, one purpose being to secure silent reading before oral reading is attempted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Year Language Reader The language reader series is, as the name implies, a set of graded school readers in which one of the definite objects is the teaching of the language as well as the reading of good literature. This purpose has been more fully stated in the prefaces to the advanced numbers. The present volume contains but little besides the reading matter itself. It seems best at this stage of the work not\to complicate the page by the introduction of matter auxiliary to the study. Such assistance should be, and usually is, given by the teacher. It may, therefore, not be amiss to state several objects which the teacher should have in mind in this second year of the work in language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classics Old and New: A Series of School Readers; A Third Reader At frequent intervals through the volume, language lessons are given which furnish a systematic language drill, without any attempt whatever to teach technical grammar. The suggestions of each language lesson should not be limited in application to the story under which it is found, but should be judiciously used by teachers as an exercise with other reading lessons. But the classics are often either not related at all to the work in expression, or the relationship is indicated in a vague and desultory fashion. The Language Readers make the relationship close and vital, without killing the pupil's enjoyment of literature or rendering the work in expression pedantic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Third Reader This book is intended for Filipino pupils who have completed a second reader. With the supplementary work which is provided in a language book of the series, it is believed that these lessons furnish sufficient reading material for the third year's instruction in English. The purpose of the book has controlled the selection of subject-matter and the scope of the lessons. The chief aim of a reader must always be to furnish a series of graded exercises in the language which the pupil is studying. Aside from the obvious purpose of teaching English however, an effort has been made to stimulate and inter est the pupil in his study of history and geography. This is particularly true of the history and geography of the Philippines and of those countries which are now or have been in the past closely connected in a political way with the Islands. With this in mind lessons have been introduced bearing upon the early discoveries of the Spanish, the labors of Legaspi and Salcedo, the attack by Li-ma-hong, the voyage of the Mayflower, the resources of the Philippine Islands, the Republic of Mexico, and other kindred subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Language Readers: Fifth Reader Irving, Hawthorne, and Scott, which appear as formal reading lessons, carefully prepared accounts of the authors used have been arranged alphabetically in the appendix. Such arrangement will train pupils to use the reference lists as they use their dictionaries. These accounts should be utilized consistently. In many instances they present something of the romance of the author's life. The story of the struggles, ambitions, and successes of a writer often awakens in the pupil an interest which cannot fail to lead to the reading of other books by the same author. Too much stress cannot be laid on this feature of the work in reading. It is one of the most important functions of the teacher in the higher grades of the elementary school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Language Readers: Fourth Reader The lessons in this fifth book of the Language Readers have been written or selected to meet the requirements of fourth-year pupils. At this period of school life it is possible to lay the foundations of a literary sense if the reading lessons exhibit interesting diversity of content, and the language is adapted to the understanding of the child. In this reader frequent use has been made of the legends and folk stories of different nations, because the human interest in such stories appeals strongly to the child's mind. Fairy stories from Hans Christian Andersen and other sources have also been included, for this is the age when the child's enjoyment of the fairy tale has reached its zenith. Much has been accomplished in the education of the young when a desire to read has been aroused But the reading must be select in content as well as literary in form; hence stories of patriotism and lessons with a direct ethical purpose have been included in this book. Such reading tends directly to the development of character, and the ethical purpose in the lesson is best taught through the interest in the story. The value of the earliest work in literature is measured by the interest aroused and the profit the child obtains from his reading. This marks the beginning of a literary taste. Its development is a matter of slow growth. It cannot be forced. It must follow the same general principle - from the simple to the more difficult - that underlies the teaching of other subjects. But, teachers should avoid using the word composition before young pupils. It is a bugbear, - a stumbling block in the way of many a child's progress. It is much better to lead children so gradually into the expression of thei1 own thoughts that they are unconscious of difficulties. They have not only acquired a considerable vocabulary, but have now a practical mastery of our vernacular. They use English in their conversa tion; in short, they have acquired the power of ex pressing their feelings and thoughts in the English language. Notwithstanding all this, they are con scious of the fact that their language is less idiomatic than that of the native born, and their power over the written expression is wofully weak.
