Download or read book Third Symposium on Advanced Propulsion Concepts Sponsored by United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the General Electric Company Flight Propulsion Division Cincinnati Ohio October 2 4 1962 Feasibility of Inter stellar Travel written by DWAIN F. SPENCER and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ON A PURELY THEORETICAL BASIS, STAGED VEHICLES USING FISSION OR FUSION PROPULSION SYSTEMS ARE CAPABLE OF PERFORMING INTERSTELLAR MISSIONS WITH FLIGHT TIMES OF LESS THAN 50 YEARS. Specific consideration of a fusion propulsion system indicates that probe flight times of 50 yearsARE REASONABLE TO A 5 LIGHT YEAR STAR. However, engineering problems associated with these vehicles, in particular the size of the radiator required to dump the energy escaping the fuel, may limit their capability unless some method can be devised to minimize this energy loss. Book Third Symposium on Advanced Propulsion Concepts Sponsored by United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the General Electric Company Flight Propulsion Division Cincinnati Ohio October 2 4 1962 Quest for Heavy Particle Propulsion

Download or read book Third Symposium on Advanced Propulsion Concepts Sponsored by United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the General Electric Company Flight Propulsion Division Cincinnati Ohio October 2 4 1962 Quest for Heavy Particle Propulsion written by ROBERT E. HUNTER and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the primary motivation for heavy particle electrical propulsion research is the attainment of efficient operation in the intermediate range of specific impulse (1000-5000 seconds), the concept gives promise of efficient operation at any desired specific impulse. The many approaches being pursued are not without practical problems but the accomplishments to date vindicate the early proponents and justify the continued enthusiasm of the electric propulsion scientific community. The present-day problems of charge/mass ratio distribution (including ionic current and neutral loss), low source current, agglomeration, etc. will all be overcome in time. It remains only to be shown what compromises must be made in order to achieve a usable thrustor and then comparison with other thrustors to determine competitiveness. (Author).

Book Third Symposium on Advanced Propulsion Concepts Sponsored by United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the General Electric Company Flight Propulsion Division Cincinnati Ohio October 2 4 1962 Nasa Research on Resistance Heated Hydrogen Jets

Download or read book Third Symposium on Advanced Propulsion Concepts Sponsored by United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the General Electric Company Flight Propulsion Division Cincinnati Ohio October 2 4 1962 Nasa Research on Resistance Heated Hydrogen Jets written by JOHN R. JACK and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electric propulsion scheme to be considered is the simple hydrogen heater. In this approach, hydrogen is heated by passing it through or over an electrically heated refractory metal heat exchanger prior to expansion in a nozzle. To be useful for space missions, such an engine must be capable of producing a vacuum specific impulse of the order of 1000 seconds. Fortunately with a suitable design, the required heat exchanger temperatures can be obtained. In addition to being competitive in terms of specific impulse, this propulsion approach offers other potentially attractive features some of which are high efficiency, long life and reliability, simple matching to power supply, simple starting technique, and variable thrust.
