Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Classics: Third Reader A classic is something more easily known than defined. It is not necessarily abstruse, difficult, or remote from common life. It is a piece of literature that has received the approval of good judges for a long enough time to make that approval settled. Like good music, it cannot grow old; it is last year's rag-time that becomes unpleasant, not the good old songs. A classic may be as old as Homer, or as new as Hawthorne; it may be as difficult as Dante, or as simple as Mother Goose. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heath Readers: Third Reader The poetry for this grade has been selected with care for what is childlike and at the same time of high literary merit. The Great Ones of the past wrote chiefly for the adult mind, with small account of childish taste and capacity. But here and there gleam precious bits, golden bright, which the little ones of all time will eagerly seize and cherish. The Third Reader has endeavored to remember this in its selections. The fairy tales and folk-lore included have the merit of novelty as well as fascination, many of the selections never having appeared before in a reading book. It has been the aim to provide interesting material full of action, and upon subjects children like, and from the child's point of view. There has been no effort to preach or to force a moral, but bright and lovely ideals have been presented in a cheerful and natural way. All material has been graded with unusual care to avoid sudden and extreme leaps from that which is easy to that which is difficult. Acknowledgment is due to those whose helpful aid has made the Third Reader what it is. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A child who literally browses among books may appropriate something of their richness of thought and experience, and if trained to read orally he is able to share with others the wealth he has acquired. But this is not all. Oral reading is the simplest and most natural means of self -expression. The dramatic instinct actually demands expression in every child. If the story be natural and vivid, lending itself to a free play of action and feeling, oral reading becomes a most natural and desirable outlet for the normal emotions. In all the stories the thought element must precede the correct oral expression. Arouse an intelligent interest in the story before taking up the reading itself. Talk about the story and the setting; discuss the characters in the story and let the children discuss the pictures. Corre late your work in nature and ethics with the reading lesson. If fifteen or twenty minutes are spent in trying to teach isolated words before anything is said about the content of the reading lesson, the child is tired out; his mind is not in the best condition to take up the reading itself. Let the child's interest be aroused by the story or content at the beginning of the reading period. The drill on the new words of the lesson will be more spirited because thought has been associated with these words. The following method of taking up the reading lesson is suggested for use with this reader I. Phonetic drill upon the new and unknown pho netic words that occur in the story to be read. II. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Continental Third Reader When a boy has learned only how to read, and not what to read, he is in great peril. Books, newspapers, and periodicals of every character multiply yearly by thousands. What shall I read is usually answered by the ability and taste of the reader. Our Intermediate schools, public and private, must shoulder the great responsibility of forming and directing the taste of the rising generation. Reading, as usually taught in these schools, falls far short of inciting a desire for general and instruct ive reading. The reason for this neglect is to be found in the great attention given to the art of expression, disregarding the child's interest in the lesson, or his knowledge of it.
