Book Feeling Extended

    Book Details:
  • Author : Douglas Robinson
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2013-08-16
  • ISBN : 0262314916
  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book Feeling Extended written by Douglas Robinson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2013-08-16 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new view of the extended mind thesis argues that a stark binary opposition between really extending and seeming to extend oversimplifies the issue. The extended-mind thesis (EMT), usually attributed to Andy Clark and David Chalmers, proposes that in specific kinds of mind-body-world interaction there emerges an extended cognitive system incorporating such extracranial supports as pencils, papers, computers, and other objects and environments in the world. In Feeling Extended, Douglas Robinson accepts the thesis, but argues that the usual debate over EMT—which centers on whether mind really (literally, actually, materially) extends to body and world or only seems to—oversimplifies the issue. When we say that mind feels as if it extends, Robinson argues, what extends is precisely feeling—and mind, insofar as it arises out of feeling. Robinson explores the world of affect and conation as intermediate realms of being between the physical movements of body and the qualitative movements of mind. He shows that affect is transcranial and tends to become interpersonal conation. Affective-becoming-conative sociality, he argues, is in fact the primary area in which body-becoming-mind extends. To make his case, Robinson draws on a wide spectrum of philosophical thought—from the EMT and qualia debates among cognitivists to the prehistory of such debates in the work of Hegel and Peirce to continental challenges to Hegelianism from Bakhtin and Derrida—as well as on extensive empirical research in social psychology and important sociological theories of face (Goffman), ritual (Connerton), and habitus (Bourdieu).

Book Heavy WIMP Effective Theory

Download or read book Heavy WIMP Effective Theory written by Mikhail P. Solon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about dark matter’s particle nature and the implications of a new symmetry that appears when a hypothetical dark matter particle is heavy compared to known elementary particles. Dark matter exists and composes about 85% of the matter in the universe, but it cannot be explained in terms of the known elementary particles. Discovering dark matter's particle nature is one of the most pressing open problems in particle physics. This thesis derives the implications of a new symmetry that appears when the hypothetical dark matter particle is heavy compared to the known elementary particles, a situation which is well motivated by the null results of searches at the LHC and elsewhere. The new symmetry predicts a universal interaction between dark matter and ordinary matter, which in turn may be used to determine the event rate and detectable energy in dark matter direct detection experiments. The computation of heavy wino and higgsino dark matter presented in this work has become a benchmark for the field of direct detection. This thesis has also spawned a new field of investigation in dark matter indirect detection, determining heavy WIMP annihilation rates using effective field theory methods. It describes a new formalism for implementing Lorentz invariance constraints in nonrelativistic theories, with a surprising result at 1/M^4 order that contradicts the prevailing ansatz in the past 20 years of heavy quark literature. The author has also derived new perturbative QCD results to provide the definitive analysis of key Standard Model observables such as heavy quark scalar matrix elements of the nucleon. This is an influential thesis, with impacts in dark matter phenomenology, field theory formalism and precision hadronic physics.

Book Unbuilt Utopian Cities 1460 to 1900 Reconstructing their Architecture and Political Philosophy

Download or read book Unbuilt Utopian Cities 1460 to 1900 Reconstructing their Architecture and Political Philosophy written by Tessa Morrison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together ten utopian works that mark important points in the history and an evolution in social and political philosophies, this book not only reflects on the texts and their political philosophy and implications, but also, their architecture and how that architecture informs the political philosophy or social agenda that the author intended. Each of the ten authors expressed their theory through concepts of community and utopian architecture, but each featured an architectural solution at the centre of their social and political philosophy, as none of the cities were ever built, they have remained as utopian literature. Some of the works examined are very well-known, such as Tommaso Campanella’s Civitas Solis, while others such as Joseph Michael Gandy’s Designs for Cottages, are relatively obscure. However, even with the best known works, this volume offers new insights by focusing on the architecture of the cities and how that architecture represents the author’s political philosophy. It reconstructs the cities through a 3-D computer program, ArchiCAD, using Artlantis to render. Plans, sections, elevations and perspectives are presented for each of the cities. The ten cities are: Filarete - Sforzina; Albrecht Dürer - Fortified Utopia; Tommaso Campanella - The City of the Sun; Johann Valentin Andreae - Christianopolis; Joseph Michael Gandy - An Agricultural Village; Robert Owen - Villages of Unity and Cooperation; James Silk Buckingham - Victoria; Robert Pemberton - Queen Victoria Town; King Camp Gillette - Metropolis; and Bradford Peck - The World a Department Store. Each chapter considers the work in conjunction with contemporary thought, the political philosophy and the reconstruction of the city. Although these ten cities represent over 500 years of utopian and political thought, they are an interlinked thread that had been drawn from literature of the past and informed by contemporary thought and society. The book is structured in two parts:

RoseAngel Dobson - psychic quasi-extraordinaire - uses her telepathic powers to help people and pets at her humane society job. She’ll be the first to admit, though, she’s a masked superhero in this regard, keeping her true colors hidden behind a ringing phone. Helping people - alive or dead - is what she does, and by golly she does it well. So when a darkly mysterious caller with the sexiest voice on the planet calls - accompanied by a ghostly vision of a boy in need - RoseAngel knows she has to find out who this child is, and how to help save him. It has absolutely nothing to do with trying to learn more about the caller who makes her heart do the jitterbug. Nope. Nothing at all. Travis Mattison is hiding his true identity, going under the alias Trevor Matthews, although the spunky redhead who bumps into him at the grocery store seems to know his real name. He is too close to finishing a three-year ordeal, suffering through a series of events that would put a lesser man in R-wing, and if Ms. Dobson knows who he really is, nothing in his world will be safe. Including his life. As the attraction between them grows, so does the risk. RoseAngel’s life gets upended, while Travis’s is endangered. All RoseAngel has to do to save their future is pinpoint Travis’s location on a map. Too bad she was probably eating ice cream the day they handed out that ability. Sensuality Level: Sensual
