Book Third European Quality of Life Survey

Download or read book Third European Quality of Life Survey written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European companies have a key role to play in helping the EU reach the Europe 2020 targets of smart, inclusive and sustainable growth. How companies organise their work is important in facilitating innovation, improving performance and ensuring good job quality. Workplace innovation is increasingly recognised as a key source of growth, contributing as it does to developing human capital and boosting both creativity and productivity. The flagship initiative 'Innovation Union' - part of the Europe 2020 Strategy - sees workplace innovation as complementary to technological innovation and a prerequisite for achieving smart growth. Industrial relations systems are crucial in shaping how companies meet these challenges. Countries with well-established social dialogue and industrial relations institutions tend to have better economic and social situations, and to be more competitive. The third European Company Survey (ECS) maps practices in establishments with 10 or more employees across the EU28, and in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Iceland, Montenegro and Turkey. In all, over 30,000 establishments were surveyed by Gallup Europe, with a target sample size per country ranging from 300 to 1,650. Topics comprise work organisation, human resources (HR) practices, employee participation and social dialogue, and how these practices support 'smart growth'. Interviews were conducted in spring 2013 with HR managers, and with employee representatives (wherever possible). The third ECS provides new data on how organisations are organised - in particular, how employees and their representatives are involved in improving work organisation and work processes. In doing so, it aims to contribute to a better understanding of how to facilitate economic growth for Member States and better outcomes for employees. This résumé mainly describes the survey's first findings of practices in establishments dealing with market activities - mostly commercial, private-sector activities, excluding fisheries and agriculture. Practices in establishments managing specific public services (health, education and public administration) are described at the end of the résumé. Further analyses will examine whether and how specific bundles of establishment features combine and are associated with performance.

Book 3rd European Company Survey

Book excerpt: Innovation is an important driver of improved competitiveness, productivity and growth potential. This report explores which workplace practices have the strongest links to innovative company behaviour, looking at innovation in the form of new or significantly changed products or processes, new or improved marketing methods, and organisational change. It also explores links between innovation and company performance and workplace well-being, and examines the role of social dialogue in enhancing performance, well-being and innovation. The use of monitoring instruments for internal quality and external developments turned out to be among the strongest determinants of overall innovation; the degree of workers' autonomy was another important factor. The probability of innovation is boosted when strong work organisation structures are combined with direct employee participation - for instance, involvement in solving problems or improving the quality of production.

Book European Born Globals

Download or read book European Born Globals written by Irene Mandl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the global recession, job creation is a policy priority. While it is a well-accepted fact that the majority of jobs are created by small and medium-sized enterprises, not all SMEs are rapidly growing, or even intend to expand. With limited public budgets, business models within the SME population that do show high job creation potential become very attractive. One of the business types identified as major engines of job creation are ‘born globals’ characterised as firms which engage intensively in internationalisation activities shortly after start-up. They are high on the entrepreneurship research agenda but so far little attention has been devoted to their potential as job creators, the processes they apply when hiring and the barriers they face. Through a combination of secondary data analysis, literature reviews and international case studies, European Born Globals sheds new light on the motivations and processes of job creation in born global firms. It will contribute to understanding the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of job creation in born globals, essential not only for policy makers, but also for academic research and management education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper on Finland discusses that the country is struggling to recover from the Great Recession, indicating that deeper, structural issues may be holding back growth. Estimates of potential output for Finland are an important part of the toolkit for policymakers—but they come with a degree of uncertainty. As this paper illustrates, the use of different methodologies and assumptions can lead to different results. However, there are indications that Finnish potential output growth is low at this juncture. From 1997 to 2007, potential growth, independent of the choice of smoothing, averages 3.2 percent per year. In 2013, that average has dropped to 0.2 with several of the models producing negative growth. This result indicates that the lack of a recovery in Finland is largely structural in nature. Therefore, any indication that the output gap is closing is due to falling potential rather than a pickup in growth. This leads to the advantages of structural reforms aiming to enhance Finland’s long-term capacity. Total factor productivity enhancing measures could be crucial in helping the economy recover despite the time it takes to implement them.

Book Flexible Work

Download or read book Flexible Work written by Sarah H. Norgate and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-27 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flexible Work: Designing Our Healthier Future Lives examines flexible working through the lens of social science, in particular using psychological perspective to address not only what forms of flexible working there are and how they are evolving but also their prospect in the future of work. Bringing together views from thought-leaders and underpinned by research evidence, this book addresses two of the most fundamental business challenges for large and medium organisations – mental health and productivity – calling for the bridging of science and policy to design flexible working for our future healthier lives. Growing from these foundations, this book explains the latest landscape in flexible working, looking at employee psychological health and productivity, including showing up for work sick. Perspectives are provided from around the world on leadership, line management, ‘over attachment’ with technology, commuting, skill-based inequality and control over working time. Readers are offered insights into the relevance of flexible working for a diverse workforce – invisible disabilities, disabilities, older workers and blended families. Throughout, the book offers suggestions for shaping future policy, practice and research. Each chapter concludes with recommendations, making this essential reading for students, academics, human resource practitioners, policy-influencers, policymakers and professionals interested in flexible work.
