Book Thinking Color in Space

Download or read book Thinking Color in Space written by Kerstin Schultz and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction between color and architecture determines our perception of space, and defines the tectonic relationships. The fascinating spatial potential of color, and the multi-layered dimensions of interpretation in the experience of color are design and communication means which, however, are often not fully used – color oscillates between autonomy and functional purpose, and should be understood as a distinct "material" that can be used as part of the design. The book focuses both on the tangible aspects and design criteria of color, and on its indeterminate nature and its experience value. Using examples in art and architecture, the spatial interdependency of color is illustrated, as is its interaction with structure, light, and geometry.

Download or read book Thinking Space Advancing Art written by Elena Fell and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing art theory is obsessed by theories of spectatorship based on concepts of signification derived from language. This book shows the weakness of such a perspective, and, as an alternative, argues that individual aesthetic transformations of pictorial structure change one’s experience of space. In addition, it proves that this transformation is an ongoing process; pictorial art is progressively articulated through historical development, and is, therefore able to increase its cognitive and aesthetic scope. To support such a perspective, the book brings together ideas from Ernst Cassirer and Paul Crowther. Cassirer’s philosophy of symbolic forms offers a profound way of understanding historical transformations in our experience of space, and Crowther’s work on imagination and aesthetics shows how this can be extended to pictorial space and the uniqueness of pictorial art. By combining the two approaches, it is demonstrated how pictorial art extends our basic involvement in, and cognition of, space, and provides it with a special kind of aesthetic meaning.

Download or read book The Thinking Space written by Leona Rittner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cafe is not only a place to enjoy a cup of coffee, it is also a space - distinct from its urban environment - in which to reflect and take part in intellectual debate. Since the eighteenth century in Europe, intellectuals and artists have gathered in cafes to exchange ideas, inspirations and information that has driven the cultural agenda for Europe and the world. Without the café, would there have been a Karl Marx or a Jean-Paul Sartre? The café as an institutional site has been the subject of renewed interest amongst scholars in the past decade, and its role in the development of art, ideas and culture has been explored in some detail. However, few have investigated the ways in which cafés create a cultural and intellectual space which brings together multiple influences and intellectual practices and shapes the urban settings of which they are a part. This volume presents an international group of scholars who consider cafés as sites of intellectual discourse from across Europe during the long modern period. Drawing on literary theory, history, cultural studies and urban studies, the contributors explore the ways in which cafes have functioned and evolved at crucial moments in the histories of important cities and countries - notably Paris, Vienna and Italy. Choosing these sites allows readers to understand both the local particularities of each café while also seeing the larger cultural connections between these places. By revealing how the café operated as a unique cultural context within the urban setting, this volume demonstrates how space and ideas are connected. As our global society becomes more focused on creativity and mobility the intellectual cafés of past generations can also serve as inspiration for contemporary and future knowledge workers who will expand and develop this tradition of using and thinking in space.

Book Thinking of Space Relationally

Download or read book Thinking of Space Relationally written by Xiaoxue Gao and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the relational turn, scholars have combated methodological universalism, nationalism, and individualism in researching social-spatial transformations. Yet, when leaving the gaps between the traveling and local epistemic assumptions unattended, engaging relational spatial theories in empirical research may still reproduce established theoretical claims. Following the sociology of knowledge tradition and taking Critical Realism as a meta-theoretical framework, Xiaoxue Gao takes relational spatial theories as traveling conceptual knowledge and develops meaningful and context-sensitive ways of engaging them in studying the complex urban phenomenon in China. She offers conceptual elucidations and methodological roadmaps, which leap productively from employing plural causal hypotheses to generating effect-based explanations for locally observable events. They are exemplified by manifold interrogations of Beijing's Artworld as a conjuncture of particular events.

Book The Colour Out of Space

Download or read book The Colour Out of Space written by H.P. Lovecraft and published by Aegitas. This book was released on 2022-12-19 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parallel worlds, unsolved family secrets, evil spirits, alien matter, witchcraft and magic, cursed places, visions beyond the human mind – Lovecraft's world of fiction is not only filled with Cthulhu myths. His universe is inhabited by other unknown and unfathomable creatures that come from the depths of forests, impassable swamps, deep caves, mysterious dungeons and even other times and dimensions, which can be accidentally entered by opening a window in the attic. Lovecraft wrote one of his first stories, "The Beast in the Cave," when he was only 14 years old. Short story "The Color Out of Space" the author considered one of his best works. The original plots of Lovecraft's mystical stories became the basis for popular songs, movies, and computer games. The famous writer Stephen King considers Howard Lovecraft his inspiration. "The Colour Out of Space" appeared in the September 1927 edition of Hugo Gernsback's science fiction magazine Amazing Stories. The story revolves around the area known as the "blasted heath" near the fictional town of Arkham, Massachusetts. Many years ago a meteorite crashed there, poisoning every living being nearby; vegetation grows large but foul-tasting, animals are driven mad and deformed into grotesque shapes, and the people go insane or die one by one.

Book The Border Between Seeing and Thinking

Download or read book The Border Between Seeing and Thinking written by Ned Block and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-16 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is the difference between seeing and thinking? Is the border between seeing and thinking a joint in nature in the sense of a fundamental explanatory difference? Is it a difference of degree? Does thinking affect seeing, i.e. is seeing "cognitively penetrable"? Are we aware of faces, causation, numerosity and other "high-level" properties or only of the colors, shapes and textures that-according to the advocate of high level perception--are the basis on which we see them? Is perception conceptual and propositional? Is perception iconic or more akin to language in being discursive? Is seeing singular? Which is more fundamental, visual attribution or visual discrimination? Is all seeing seeing-as? What is the difference between the format and content of perception and do perception and cognition have different formats? Is perception probabilistic and if so, why are we not normally aware of this probabilistic nature of perception? Are the basic features of mind known as "core cognition" a third category in between perception and cognition? Are there perceptual categories that are not concepts? Where does consciousness fit in with regard to the difference between seeing and thinking? Do the lessons from seeing apply to other senses? These are the questions I will be exploring in this book. I will be exploring them not mainly by appeals to "intuitions" as is common in philosophy of perception but by appeal to empirical evidence, including experiments in neuroscience and psychology"--

Book Thinking and Speaking in Two Languages

Download or read book Thinking and Speaking in Two Languages written by Aneta Pavlenko and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2011-01-19 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, the history of debates about language and thought has been a history of thinking of language in the singular. The purpose of this volume is to reverse this trend and to begin unlocking the mysteries surrounding thinking and speaking in bi- and multilingual speakers. If languages influence the way we think, what happens to those who speak more than one language? And if they do not, how can we explain the difficulties second language learners experience in mapping new words and structures onto real-world referents? The contributors to this volume put forth a novel approach to second language learning, presenting it as a process that involves conceptual development and restructuring, and not simply the mapping of new forms onto pre-existing meanings.

The three are promptly confronted by the terrible Ghanglers who rule that planet's surface. Led by the vicious Tehrran Tuhlla, the Ghanglers use the power of the whirlwind to enforce rigid planetary standards of conformity as they go about their relentless business on the individual tornadoes which serve them instead of feet. Morgan leads them to refuge in the secret, underground nation of Chrystellea, where the citizens have problems of their own. Their leader, Behrrn the Rememberer, has forgotten The Dream, a dream which the people cherish, of color in a colorless universe. Now though, even the cherished 'memory' of color fades, draining from the White World 'like water from a bathtub." The sequel, Jenny and the Dread Dimension, will be published in the fall of 2006.

Book Color for the Sciences

Download or read book Color for the Sciences written by Jan J. Koenderink and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2010-08-20 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive introduction to colorimetry from a conceptual perspective. Color for the Sciences is the first book on colorimetry to offer an account that emphasizes conceptual and formal issues rather than applications. Jan Koenderink's introductory text treats colorimetry—literally, “color measurement”—as a science, freeing the topic from the usual fixation on conventional praxis and how to get the “right” result. Readers of Color for the Sciences will learn to rethink concepts from the roots in order to reach a broader, conceptual understanding. After a brief account of the history of the discipline (beginning with Isaac Newton) and a chapter titled “Colorimetry for Dummies,” the heart of the book covers the main topics in colorimetry, including the space of beams, achromatic beams, edge colors, optimum colors, color atlases, and spectra. Other chapters cover more specialized topics, including implementations, metrics pioneered by Schrödinger and Helmholtz, and extended color space. Color for the Sciences can be used as a reference for professionals or in a formal introductory course on colorimetry. It will be especially useful both for those working with color in a scientific or engineering context who find the standard texts lacking and for professionals and students in image engineering, computer graphics, and computer science. Each chapter ends with exercises, many of which are open-ended, suggesting ways to explore the topic further, and can be developed into research projects. The text and notes contain numerous suggestions for demonstration experiments and individual explorations. The book is self-contained, with formal methods explained in appendixes when necessary.
