Book Patriots for Profit

Download or read book Patriots for Profit written by Thomas Bruneau and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a new approach to the analysis of civil-military relations by focusing on the effectiveness of the armed forces in fulfilling roles & missions, and on their efficiency in terms of cost. The approach is applied to the United States using official documents and interviews with policy-makers. In addition to analyzing the impact of defense reform initiatives over the past thirty years, the book includes the recent phenomenon of "contracting-out" security that has resulted in greater numbers of contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan than uniformed military personnel. While the book demonstrates that democratic civilian control of the military in the U.S. is not at issue, it reveals that there is little public control over Private Security Contractors due to a combination of the current restricted interpretation of what is an "inherently governmental function" and limited legal authority. This is despite the fact that PSCs have taken on roles and missions that were previously the responsibility of the uniformed military. Further, despite numerous efforts to redress the problem, current political and institutional barriers to reform are not likely to be overcome soon.

Book Implications of Service Cyberspace Component Commands for Army Cyberspace Operations

Download or read book Implications of Service Cyberspace Component Commands for Army Cyberspace Operations written by Jeffrey L Caton and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emerging Department of Defense (DoD) Cyber Mission Force includes forces from all military services that may reflect artifacts in their organization, training, and operation that are influenced by service cultures. Such diversity offers challenges and opportunities for senior leaders and policymakers entrusted with creating a joint force that can operate professionally in and through cyberspace. This monograph examines how the U.S. Army may benefit by adopting processes and practices from other service cyberspace forces to the operations of Army Cyber Command. It focuses on the central question: "What is the context in which different military services approach cyberspace component operations internally as well as with the DoD?" To address this question, the study is divided into four major sections: - First, the monograph provides a background of the mission and structure of U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM) and the tenets of current joint cyberspace operations doctrine. - Second, it explores the mission, organization, training, and equipping of each of the four service cyberspace components as well as the Coast Guard contributions. - Third, it analyzes how the service components support the USCYBERCOM mission as well as common trends and service culture influences among their operations. - Fourth, the author provides recommendations for DoD and Army leaders to consider for the enhancement of joint and service cyberspace operations.

Download or read book Teaching Strategy written by Gabriel Marcella and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No subject is more essential in the preparation of national security professionals and military leaders than the teaching of strategy, from grand to military strategy. Nor is there one that is more timeless and intellectually demanding. Moreover, the experience of the armed forces in recent wars recommends that the system of military education needs to conduct a serious analysis of the way strategy is taught. The task is even more imperative because the ambiguous conflicts and the complex geopolitical environment of the future are likely to challenge the community of strategists, civilian as well as military, in ways not seen in the past. In this context, developing the appropriate curriculum and effective methods of teaching strategy will be the responsibility of universities, colleges, and institutions of professional military education. The authors of this compendium ask and answer the central question of how to teach strategy. The findings, insights, and recommendations are those of professionals who are accomplished in the classroom as well as the crucible of strategy. This book should stimulate discussion and introspection that will in time enhance the security of our nation. Strategic Studies Institute.

This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late 2015, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) initiated reforms that have brought dramatic changes to its structure, model of warfighting, and organizational culture, including the creation of a Strategic Support Force (SSF) that centralizes most PLA space, cyber, electronic, and psychological warfare capabilities. The reforms come at an inflection point as the PLA seeks to pivot from land-based territorial defense to extended power projection to protect Chinese interests in the "strategic frontiers" of space, cyberspace, and the far seas. Understanding the new strategic roles of the SSF is essential to understanding how the PLA plans to fight and win informationized wars and how it will conduct information operations.

Book Reorganizing the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Download or read book Reorganizing the Joint Chiefs of Staff written by Gordon Lederman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-11-30 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Goldwater-Nichols Department of Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 is the most important legislation to affecting U.S. national defense in the last 50 years. This act resulted from frustration in Congress and among certain military officers concerning what they believed to be the poor quality of military advice available to civilian decision-makers. It also derived from the U.S. military's perceived inability to conduct successful joint or multi-service operations. The act, passes after four years of legislative debate, designated the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as the principal military advisor to the President and sought to foster greater cooperation among the military services. Goldwater-Nichols marks the latest attempt to balance competing tendencies within the Department of Defense, namely centralization versus decentralization and geographic versus functional distributions of power. As a result of the Goldwater-Nichols Act, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs has achieved prominence, but his assignment is somewhat contradictory: the spokesman and thus the advocate for the Commander in Chief, while simultaneously the provider of objective advice to the President. While the act did succeed in strengthening the CINCs' authority and in contributing to the dramatic U.S. achievements in the Gulf War, the air and ground campaigns revealed weaknesses in the CINCs' capability to plan joint operations. In addition, the increased role of the military in ad hoc peacekeeping operations has challenged the U.S. military's current organizational structure for the quick deployment of troops from the various services. Rapid technological advances and post-Cold War strategic uncertainty also complicate the U.S. military's organizational structure.
