Book excerpt: Bed bugs are thriving across the globe--from North and South America, to Africa, Asia and Europe. For some time, bed bugs were naively seen as a problem unique to developing countries, but their love of high thread content sheets has set them up in five-star residences in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other parts of Europe as well. Bed Bugs were first noticed in society by Americans in the early 1700 s. Many believe sailboats returning from Europe unknowingly carried the bugs as cargo, as sailors complained of being attacked as they slept in their cabins. With the introduction of DDT in the 1950s, bed bugs nearly disappeared. But when DDT was banned in the 1970 s, a wave of super bed bugs rejoiced. Now, up to 25% of residents in some cities have reported problems with the pests, bordering on epidemic levels. In fact, history has never seen such widespread and intense bed bug infestations. Our propensity for travel has left bed bugs with enviable frequent flyer status too. Following the Sydney Olympics, for example, and the thousands of visitors to Australia, it was estimated that the bed bug occupancy rate in Sydney hotels was 95%. In "Sleep Tight, "Brooke Borel introduces readers to the biology of these amazingly adaptive insects which can travel over 100 foot distances at night--and the myriad ways in which humans respond to them. She travels to meet with scientists who are rearing bed bug colonies on their own blood-- to the BedBug University, to swank apartments on the upper East Side of Manhattan. She explores the history of bed bugs, and their near extinction, charting how current infestations are in direct response to human chemical use. She also introduces us to the economics of bed bug infestations, and the industry that has arisen to combat that. This is the first history and natural history of bed bugs, and it leaves few exoskeletons unturned."

This is information you need so they don't take up residence with you. You will learn the many "risk" factors starting with the fact that bed bugs need blood to exist and you just happen to have it. Bed bug management takes a lot of hard work and vigilance from both the consumer and the pest control industry. Early detection plays the most significant role as without educated and informed consumers, control cannot be easily achieved. This book was written for quick and easy understanding as you take the bed bug journey and discover why they are reproducing so fast and see why they are one of, if not the toughest pests ever to eliminate. Along with identifying them, you will learn where they hide, how to treat bites, tools used for detection, travel tips and plenty of prevention methods

Book Insects A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Insects A Very Short Introduction written by Simon Leather and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, more than a million insect species have been described, with probably at least another 5-8 million species waiting in the wings for a name. Insects are a fascinatingly diverse and beautiful spectrum of animals. They range in size from the tiny parasitic wasp, measuring a mere 139μm, to the aptly named Titan beetle, which can reach lengths of up to 17cm. They can be found on all continents of the world, from the Sahara Desert to the frozen wastes of Antarctica; in caves, under the ground, inside plants, other insects and vertebrates, in rivers, streams, lakes and ponds, in puddles, in the watery interiors of pitcher plants; and in our houses. While no insects live beneath the waves, the intrepid sea skaters skim the surface of some of the world's oceans. This Very Short Introduction explores the extraordinary world of insects. It analyses insect evolution, taxonomy and development, and describes their behaviour, their life styles, and the interactions they have with other insects and other animals. As Simon Leather shows, insects are the bedrock on which human civilisation rests; without them we would almost certainly not exist. Although they can be seen as pests of our crops plants, they are also invaluable for pollinating our flowering plants and are an invaluable link in all land ecosystems. As they face challenges from climate change and pesticides it has never been more important to understand these oft-dismissed creatures. Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Download or read book The Infested Mind written by Jeffrey Lockwood and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human reaction to insects is neither purely biological nor simply cultural. And no one reacts to insects with indifference. Insects frighten, disgust and fascinate us. Jeff Lockwood explores this phenomenon through evolutionary science, human history, and contemporary psychology, as well as a debilitating bout with entomophobia in his work as an entomologist. Exploring the nature of anxiety and phobia, Lockwood explores the lively debate about how much of our fear of insects can be attributed to ancestral predisposition for our own survival and how much is learned through individual experiences. Drawing on vivid case studies, Lockwood explains how insects have come to infest our minds in sometimes devastating ways and supersede even the most rational understanding of the benefits these creatures provide. No one can claim to be ambivalent in the face of wasps, cockroaches or maggots but our collective entomophobia is wreaking havoc on the natural world as we soak our food, homes and gardens in powerful insecticides. Lockwood dissects our common reactions, distinguishing between disgust and fear, and invites readers to consider their own emotional and physiological reactions to insects in a new framework that he's derived from cutting-edge biological, psychological, and social science.

As a real estate agent and property manager, I see bed bug infestations more frequently with each passing year. Many of the affected families cannot afford to hire an exterminator. Parents are helpless and their children suffer. For some, there is no escape from this epidemic and it is absolutely heartbreaking to watch. This book is being published by the right person at the right time. It is reassuring to know that his methods will now be available to millions of people around the world." -Christina Murray

Book excerpt: A new selection of Isaac Babel's 26 most vital and beautiful stories, in acclaimed translations by Boris Dralyuk Isaac Babel honed one of the most distinctive styles in all Russian literature. Brashly conversational one moment, dreamily lyrical the next, his stories exult in the richness of everyday speech and sensual pleasure only to be shaken by brutal jolts of violence. These stories take us from the underworld of Babel's native Odessa, city of gangsters and lowlives, of drunken brawls and bleeding sunsets, to the terror and absurdity of life as a soldier in the Polish-Soviet War. Selected and translated by the prize-winning Boris Dralyuk, this collection captures the irreverence, passion and coarse beauty of Babel's singular voice.

Book Think Like a Guy

Download or read book Think Like a Guy written by Giuliana Depandi and published by St. Martin's Griffin. This book was released on 2006-06-27 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are you going to snag one if you don't know how to....Think Like a Guy? E! News anchor Giuliana DePandi knows that if you want a little piece of his heart, you're going to have to learn to get into his head--and she shares her knowledge as an on-the-town dater in L.A. into this funny but oh-so-practical and effective volume. DePandi knows what it's like "out there", and has done extensive field work to learn what turns guys off...and on. Here's a pop quiz: Should you ...mention your mom on a first date? ...cook a guy breakfast after your first sleepover at his place? ...pick at your food when he takes you to dinner? ...tell him how many lovers you've had before he came along? ...leave him long voicemails if you can't reach him on the phone? The resounding answer to all the questions above, according to DePandi, is: NO! You should, in fact, be busy and breezy, offer to pay for dinner, leave short voicemails (and none at all if you don't have anything concrete to say), stay well-dressed and -groomed, and make your guy feel like he's the first to introduce you to anything kinky in bed. Think Like a Guy is a hard-headed practical book for women who acknowledge that men and women simply think differently.
