Book excerpt: Survival fact: The people who will succeed today are those who figure out how to benefit from, or take advantage of, continuous disarray, disorder and disruption. Welcome to the age of continuous personal disruption. When even the most basic daily routines get swept up in a storm of ambiguity. When nothing is certain. When there is no perfect decision to be made. That’s why author Bill Jensen identified the 25 habits most necessary for success in today’s crazy world. Disrupt! is for everyone trying to do extraordinary things while driving through a shitstorm of relentless disruptions. Jensen uncovered these habits by going direct to the source ― the very people causing those disruptions. 100 great disruptive heroes: CEOs, inventors and scientists, entrepreneurs and freedom fighters, firefighters and doctors, geeks and a couple of freaks ... masters of disruptive innovation and change. Disruptive because they simply refuse to accept the status quo. Heroes because they are changing the rules of the game. Great because they are helping each of us change for the better.

When he walks down a breezy street collecting seed pods, he is thinking about a new nose. Charles is always thinking about something else. When his teacher, Miss Crocky, sends him to the principal's office for disrupting the class again, kind Mr. Mickle suggests that Charles be less absent-minded and more present-minded. Charles sits down and thinks about it. It is not that Charles is naughty. But no matter how hard he tries, his thoughts wander. Nothing seems to help. That is, until his hero, Great Uncle Crocódila, pays the family a surprise visit. This is a new book about Charles, written and illustrated by Aliki — the third in a delightful series that follows the award-winning Keep Your Mouth Closed, Dear and Use Your Head, Dear.

Book Ethnographic Thinking

Download or read book Ethnographic Thinking written by Jay Hasbrouck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that ‘ethnographic thinking’—the thought processes and patterns ethnographers develop through their practice—offers companies and organizations the cultural insights they need to develop fully-informed strategies. Using real world examples, Hasbrouck demonstrates how shifting the value of ethnography from simply identifying consumer needs to driving a more holistic understanding of a company or organization can help it benefit from a deeper understanding of the dynamic and interactive cultural contexts of its offerings. In doing so, he argues that such an approach can also enhance the strategic value of their work by helping them increase appreciation for openness and exploration, hone interpretive skills, and cultivate holistic thinking, in order to broaden perspectives, challenge assumptions, and cross-pollinate ideas between differing viewpoints. Ethnographic Thinking is key reading for managers and strategists specifically wishing to tap-into the potential that ethnography offers, as well as those searching more broadly for new ways to innovate practice. It is essential reading for students of applied ethnography, and recommended for scholars too.

Book Men of Bronze

  • Author : Donald Kagan
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2013-06-09
  • ISBN : 1400846307

Download or read book Men of Bronze written by Donald Kagan and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-09 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major contribution to the debate over ancient Greek warfare by some of the world's leading scholars Men of Bronze takes up one of the most important and fiercely debated subjects in ancient history and classics: how did archaic Greek hoplites fight, and what role, if any, did hoplite warfare play in shaping the Greek polis? In the nineteenth century, George Grote argued that the phalanx battle formation of the hoplite farmer citizen-soldier was the driving force behind a revolution in Greek social, political, and cultural institutions. Throughout the twentieth century scholars developed and refined this grand hoplite narrative with the help of archaeology. But over the past thirty years scholars have criticized nearly every major tenet of this orthodoxy. Indeed, the revisionists have persuaded many specialists that the evidence demands a new interpretation of the hoplite narrative and a rewriting of early Greek history. Men of Bronze gathers leading scholars to advance the current debate and bring it to a broader audience of ancient historians, classicists, archaeologists, and general readers. After explaining the historical context and significance of the hoplite question, the book assesses and pushes forward the debate over the traditional hoplite narrative and demonstrates why it is at a crucial turning point. Instead of reaching a consensus, the contributors have sharpened their differences, providing new evidence, explanations, and theories about the origin, nature, strategy, and tactics of the hoplite phalanx and its effect on Greek culture and the rise of the polis. The contributors include Paul Cartledge, Lin Foxhall, John Hale, Victor Davis Hanson, Donald Kagan, Peter Krentz, Kurt Raaflaub, Adam Schwartz, Anthony Snodgrass, Hans van Wees, and Gregory Viggiano.

Book Japanese Documentary Film

Download or read book Japanese Documentary Film written by Markus Nornes and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among Asian countries--where until recently documentary filmmaking was largely the domain of central governments--Japan was exceptional for the vigor of its nonfiction film industry. And yet, for all its aesthetic, historical, and political interest, the Japanese documentary remains little known and largely unstudied outside of Japan. This is the first English-language study of the subject, an enlightening close look at the first fifty years of documentary film theory and practice in Japan. Beginning with films made by foreigners in the nineteenth century and concluding with the first two films made after Japan's surrender in 1945, Abe Mark Nornes moves from a "prehistory of the documentary, " through innovations of the proletarian film movement, to the hardening of style and conventions that started with the Manchurian Incident films and continued through the Pacific War. Nornes draws on a wide variety of archival sources--including Japanese studio records, secret police reports, government memos, letters, military tribunal testimonies, and more--to chart shifts in documentary style against developments in the history of modern Japan.
