Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dominic Crossan explores the lost years of earliest Christianity, the years immediately following Jesus' execution. He establishes the contextual setting through a combination of literary, anthropological, historical and archaeological approaches. He challenges the assumptions about the role of Paul and the meaning of resurrection, and forges a new understanding of the birth of the Christian church. Here is a vivid account of early Christianity's interaction with the world around it, and of the new traditions and communities established as Jesus' companions continued their movement after his death.

Book Materializing Memory in Art and Popular Culture

Download or read book Materializing Memory in Art and Popular Culture written by Laszlo Muntean and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memory matters. It matters because memory brings the past into the present, and opens it up to the future. But it also matters literally, because memory is mediated materially. Materiality is the stuff of memory. Meaningful objects that we love (or hate) function not only as aide-mémoire but are integral to memory. Drawing on previous scholarship on the interrelation of memory and materiality, this book applies recent theories of new materialism to explore the material dimension of memory in art and popular culture. The book’s underlying premise is twofold: on the one hand, memory is performed, mediated, and stored through the material world that surrounds us; on the other hand, inanimate objects and things also have agency on their own, which affects practices of memory, as well as forgetting. Chapters 1, 4, and 5 of this book are freely available as downloadable Open Access PDFs at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 3.0 license.

Book Remembered Reading

  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Remembered Reading written by Mel Gibson and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reader’s history exploring the forgotten genre of girls’ comics Girls’ comics were a major genre from the 1950s onwards in Britain. The most popular titles sold between 800,000 and a million copies a week. However, this genre was slowly replaced by magazines which now dominate publishing for girls. Remembered Reading is a readers’ history which explores the genre, and memories of those comics, looking at how and why this rich history has been forgotten. The research is based around both analysis of what the titles contained and interviews with women about their childhood comic reading. In addition, it also looks at the other comic books that British girls engaged with, including humour comics and superhero titles. In doing so it looks at intersections of class, girlhood, and genre, and puts comic reading into historical, cultural, and educational context.

Book Poetics of Breathing

Download or read book Poetics of Breathing written by Stefanie Heine and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-05-01 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breathing and its rhythms—liminal, syncopal, and usually inconspicuous—have become a core poetic compositional principle in modern literature. Examining moments when breath's punctuations, cessations, inhalations, or exhalations operate at the limits of meaningful speech, Stefanie Heine explores how literary texts reflect their own mediality, production, and reception in alluding to and incorporating pneumatic rhythms, respiratory sound, and silent pauses. Through close readings of works by a series of pairs—Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg; Robert Musil and Virginia Woolf; Samuel Beckett and Sylvia Plath; and Paul Celan and Herta Müller—Poetics of Breathing suggests that each offers a different conception of literary or poetic breath as a precondition of writing. Presenting a challenge to historical and contemporary discourses that tie breath to the transcendent and the natural, Heine traces a decoupling of breath from its traditional association with life, and asks what literature might lie beyond.

Book Pictures Your Heart Remembers

Download or read book Pictures Your Heart Remembers written by John Trent and published by WaterBrook. This book was released on 2000-07-18 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pictures Your Heart Remembers, family expert Dr. John Trent shows how "pictures" of the good and bad things in our lives not only find their way into our hearts but also affect how we view ourselves, how we treat others, and even how we relate to God. These pictures, writes Trent, "affect the way we think, the way we feel, and the way we perceive the world." use the "pictures" of your life to deepen your love for God and others. In this most personal book, Trent draws on pictures from his own painful past to show how acts of kindness or cruelty-a parent's smile or a teacher's ridicule-are all wrapped up in memories that carry the power to bless or curse us. Drawing on pictures full of promise in God's Word, Trent shows that we have a choice in how we react to the negative events we've experienced in the past. We also have a choice every day to leave positive pictures in the lives of those we meet...just as Jesus did. Over a million homes have been deeply impacted by Dr. Trent's powerful message of the blessing. This book, previously released as Choosing to Live the Blessing, speaks to the people who may not have seen consistent love, acceptance, or warmth in their past and gives them hope and help in reframing those negative events into lifelong positives. Filled with genuine warmth and vulnerability, Pictures Your Heart Remembers will touch readers' hearts and challenge them to leave pictures of blessing today.
