Book Solid Surfaces Interfaces and Thin Films

Download or read book Solid Surfaces Interfaces and Thin Films written by Hans Lüth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book emphasises both experimental and theoretical aspects of surface, interface and thin film physics. Compa- red to the earlier editions, which bore the title "Surfaces and Interfaces of Solid Materials", the book now places more emphasis on thin films, including also their superconducting and ferromagnetic properties. The present 4th edition thus presents techniques of preparing well-defined solid surfaces and interfaces, fundamental aspects of adsorption and layer growth, as well as basic models for the descripti- on of structural, vibronic and electronic properties of sur- faces, interfaces and thin films. Because of their importan- ce for modern information technology, significant attention is paid to the electronic properties of semiconductor inter- faces and heterostructures. Collective phenomena , such as superconductivity and ferromagnetism, also feature promi- nently. Experimental sections covering essential measurement and preparation techniques are presented in separate panels.

Book Interfacial Phenomena

    Book Details:

  • Pages : 816 pages

Download or read book Interfacial Phenomena written by Mustafa Akbulut and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interface is defined as a surface that forms the boundary between two bodies, liquids, or chemical phases. Interfacial Phenomena is a topic that deals with an understanding of the physical and chemical properties of interfaces in natural and engineered systems and how such interfaces interact with each other and other entities. Interfacial phenomena is a critical element of a variety of chemical engineering research and processes such as chemical reactions and catalysis, colloids, drug delivery, emulsions and foams, energy conversion and storage, environmental protection and remediation, sensors, and separation and purification. The book seeks to provide a fundamental background on the sub-topics of interfacial phenomena that are relevant to the chemical and biological engineering research and processes. There is no textbook available on the market focusing on the fundamentals of interfacial phenomena primarily from a perspective of research in chemical and biological engineering. Interfacial phenomenon is a topic that has exponentially been evolving over the past two decades. To stay informed, updated, and abreast of current and emerging topics of interfacial phenomena; students, researchers, and academicians need a new book that specifically aims at having a critical balance among classical, contemporary, and emerging topics in interfacial phenomena. For the laymen (non scientist-Why should he/she buy this book?) Interfacial phenomena play an essential role in various contemporary and emerging industrial technologies for energy conversion and storage, heath care, and environmental protection and remediation. Fundamentals of Interfacial Phenomena provides an intuitive explanation of the concepts in interfacial phenomena with the aid of easy-to-follow illustrations and real-life worked examples. Accessible and easy to read throughout, the book offers a robust foundation on the physicochemical properties of interfaces and how these interfaces interact with each other and other entities. For the user (scientist/expert-why should he/she buy the book?) Fundamentals of Interfacial Phenomena provides a physicochemical background to interfacial phenomena with a specific goal of acquainting the reader with relevant concepts, laws and issues that are significant in the context of academic and industrial research in chemical and biological engineering. Due to its comprehensive presentation, the book can also be easily tailored to advance undergraduate and graduate courses in a variety of other disciplines. The book includes the latest in-depth and high-impact research regarding interfacial phenomena from around the world. Some of the topics covered in the text include thermodynamics of interfaces; intermolecular and interparticle interactions; surface forces; electrostatic and electrokinetic phenomena at interfaces; contact angle phenomena and wetting; liquid surfaces; adsorption and desorption; surface modification; self- and directed- assembly; emulsions, micelles, and foams; thin films; biological interfaces; and interfacial mass transfer.

Book Handbook of Surfaces and Interfaces of Materials Five Volume Set

Download or read book Handbook of Surfaces and Interfaces of Materials Five Volume Set written by Hari Singh Nalwa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-10-26 with total page 1915 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook brings together, under a single cover, all aspects of the chemistry, physics, and engineering of surfaces and interfaces of materials currently studied in academic and industrial research. It covers different experimental and theoretical aspects of surfaces and interfaces, their physical properties, and spectroscopic techniques that have been applied to a wide class of inorganic, organic, polymer, and biological materials. The diversified technological areas of surface science reflect the explosion of scientific information on surfaces and interfaces of materials and their spectroscopic characterization. The large volume of experimental data on chemistry, physics, and engineering aspects of materials surfaces and interfaces remains scattered in so many different periodicals, therefore this handbook compilation is needed. The information presented in this multivolume reference draws on two decades of pioneering research on the surfaces and interfaces of materials to offer a complete perspective on the topic. These five volumes-Surface and Interface Phenomena; Surface Characterization and Properties; Nanostructures, Micelles, and Colloids; Thin Films and Layers; Biointerfaces and Applications-provide multidisciplinary review chapters and summarize the current status of the field covering important scientific and technological developments made over past decades in surfaces and interfaces of materials and spectroscopic techniques with contributions from internationally recognized experts from all over the world. Fully cross-referenced, this book has clear, precise, and wide appeal as an essential reference source long due for the scientific community. Book Thin Liquid Films

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ralf Blossey
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Thin Liquid Films written by Ralf Blossey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a treatise on the thermodynamic and dynamic properties of thin liquid films at solid surfaces and, in particular, their rupture instabilities. For the quantitative study of these phenomena, polymer thin films (sometimes referred to as “ultrathin”) have proven to be an invaluable experimental model system. What is it that makes thin film instabilities special and interesting? First, thin polymeric films have an important range of applications. An understanding of their instabilities is therefore of practical relevance for the design of such films. The first chapter of the book intends to give a snapshot of current applications, and an outlook on promising future ones. Second, thin liquid films are an interdisciplinary research topic, which leads to a fairly heterogeneous community working on the topic. It justifies attempting to write a text which gives a coherent presentation of the field which researchers across their specialized communities might be interested in. Finally, thin liquid films are an interesting laboratory for a theorist to confront a well-established theory, hydrodynamics, with its limits. Thin films are therefore a field in which a highly fruitful exchange and collaboration exists between experimentalists and theorists. The book stretches from the more concrete to more abstract levels of study: we roughly progress from applications via theory and experiment to rigorous mathematical theory. For an experimental scientist, the book should serve as a reference and guide to what is the current consensus of the theoretical underpinnings of the field of thin film dynamics. Controversial problems on which such a consensus has not yet been reached are clearly indicated in the text, as well as discussed in a final chapter. From a theoretical point of view, the field of dewetting has mainly been treated in a mathematically ‘light’ yet elegant fashion, often making use of scaling arguments. For the untrained researcher, this approach is not always easy to follow. The present book attempts to bridge between the ‘light’ and the ‘rigorous’, always with the ambition to enhance insight and understanding - and to not let go the elegance of the theory.
