Departing from the situation of the vocational school in the Netherlands, the book provides a reading of historical and contemporary contexts, examines the notion of cultures of craft, and the various ways in which the school can embody its position within society. Five scenarios present an architectural repertoire to reinforce connections between the vocational school and the neighbourhood, the city and society at large with cultures of making and with the identity of the school. Best practices from the Netherlands and northern Europe, complemented by a number of study projects, illustrate what these scenarios might look like. The result is a cross-cultural and cross-historical archive of projects and ideas that serve as models to inspire and to build upon, to create a new chapter in the history of the craft school. Alone or in groups, they perform mysterious acts within monochromatic spaces reminiscent of an artist's barren studio. Seemingly behaving according to a symbolic language of their own, they pose alone or interact in communal dances, with some figures holding torches and others exposed naked from the waist down. Their facelessness opens up ambiguous narrative possibilities, like empty canvases with which to construct meaning. Like archetypes capable of embodying shifting meanings, the blank figures become a mold for the human condition, at once satirical, tragic, humorous, and above all, contradictory.

When asked if she?misses the touch? of her deceased husband, Mrs Bolton exclaims:?That?s it my Lady! the touch of him! ... if there?s a heaven above, he?ll be there, and will lie up against me so I can sleep.? The sentiment behind these words echoes the artist?s own awareness of the transient memories associated with a vanished physical closeness. An erotically charged photograph (1997-2016)? with the same title as the exhibition? showing the artist lying face-down on a hotel bed, alone, encapsulates what Emin has referred to as?the loss of love and sex, and about how it felt to have that passion?trying to remember, remember that desire and remember what it felt like to be entwined with someone.
