Book excerpt: Cloud computing has created virtual realms where games exist and play out endlessly. On another level is a parallel universe inhabited by people whose images existed in the cloud. The Internet controls all communications and systems in the material world but it is vulnerable to terrorists seeking to control it. They infect the games with viruses that disturb the Internet and create havoc in transportation, communications and all business and private lives. Doctor Voslov and virus control experts exist in the parallel universe and fight the terrorists but cannot enter the game realms. Jason Albright is taken from his physical life and brought into the virtual world where he is shown that civilization is threatened by forces intent on replacing democracy with Sharia. Jason is convinced to go into the realm of games encouraged and rewarded with the love of Leah, a virtual woman, who had fought and died in the struggle. Jason is sent to find and neutralize the software viruses in a series of increasingly difficult games. Each success leads to a new level that must be solved. As he moves between the virtual world and the real world his life becomes complicated as his family and friends wonder about his strange behaviour. He must satisfy the needs of a beautiful wife while loving Leah who exists only in the realms of danger and pleasure. The price of Leah's charms is his life. Diabolically clever the terrorists' technology surpasses that of the experts in the real and virtual worlds to the point where their victory is assured. Can the free world be saved from a dedicated desert Sheik?

Book Tactics of Hope in Latinx Children s and Young Adult Literature

Download or read book Tactics of Hope in Latinx Children s and Young Adult Literature written by Jesus Montaño and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2024-06-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important study affirms that Latinx children and young adults are uniquely positioned to change the world. Using Gloria Anzaldúa’s theories of conocimiento as a critical lens, the authors examine several literary works including Side by Side / Lado a lado; They Call Me Güero; Land of the Cranes; Efrén Divided; and Gabi, a Girl in Pieces. Using these texts and others, Montaño and Postma-Montaño demonstrate how Latinx literature for young readers reveals the oppressions that affect the everyday lives of Latinx youth in order to destabilize the racist notions that inform them. Whether it is injustices in the agricultural fields, weaponization of deportation and deportability, or forms of exclusion based on gender, ethnicity, and race, the books in this study counter by imagining and then participating in social-justice activism that seeks to transform the world. Ultimately the lessons shared in these books will allow Latinx young people to lead us into a future where equity and belonging are as endemic as they currently are rare.

The first goal is to explore the difference between fairness and justice in language assessment. The authors distinguish internal and external dimensions of the equitable and just treatment of individuals taking language tests which are used as gatekeeping devices to determine access to education and employment, immigrant status, citizenship, and other rights. The second goal is to show how the extent of test fairness can be demonstrated and improved using the tools of psychometrics, in particular the models collectively known as Rasch measurement. “This book will have an enormous impact on the field of language assessment. Using Rasch analysis models to explore and identify sources of unfairness, the authors make a compelling case for fairness in the design and implementation of language assessment instruments and for justice in the interpretation and use of test results. A real strength of the book is that it guides readers through analytical techniques in an accessible way.” Dan Douglas, Professor Emeritus, Applied Linguistics Program, Iowa State University.

Pulled into a world of secrets and lies for the man he loves, Declan Ramsay’s life has changed immeasurably in the eight months since meeting, and falling for his boss’s son, Sam Aiken. Declan journey of personal discovery is about to take a darker turn, and for Sam, the world becomes more treacherous than he could ever have imagined. Two agents are missing -- presumed dead, while on a reconnaissance mission at an outdoor adventure center in the Scottish Highlands. Sir James Aiken sends his son and Declan to follow the trail, and discover the fate of the agents. As the mission offers his first chance to use the skills he learned on the MI6 training course in Morocco, Declan is keen to get started. However, Sir James sees to it that the seeds of doubt and discord have been sewn between the couple, as they begin their mission. The journey to their Highland location, and the discoveries they make when they reach the G’wan Adventures center, prove that Sir James Aiken has been less than honest with his son. Events in the Highlands force Sam and Declan to face their greatest fears, and understand what they both really want from life -- and from each other.
