Book Essential Thesaurus Construction

Download or read book Essential Thesaurus Construction written by Vanda Broughton and published by Facet Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many information professionals working in small units today fail to find the published tools for subject based organization that are appropriate to their local needs, whether they are archivists, special librarians, information officers, or knowledge or content managers. Large established standards for document description and organization are too unwieldy, unnecessarily detailed, or too expensive to install and maintain. In other cases the available systems are insufficient for a specialist environment, or don't bring things together in a helpful way. A purpose built, in-house system would seem to be the answer, but too often the skills necessary to create one are lacking. This practical text examines the criteria relevant to the selection of a subject management system, describes the characteristics of some common types of subject tool, and takes the novice step-by-step through the process of creating a system for a specialist environment. The methodology employed is a standard technique for the building of a thesaurus that incidentally creates a compatible classification or taxonomy, both of which may be used in a variety of ways for document or information management. Key areas covered are: What is a thesaurus? Tools for subject access and retrieval What a thesaurus is used for Why use a thesaurus? Examples of thesauri The structure of a thesaurus Thesaural relations Practical thesaurus construction The vocabulary of the thesaurus Building the systematic structure Conversion to alphabetic format Forms of entry in the thesaurus Maintaining the thesaurus Thesaurus software The wider environment. Readership: Although primarily aimed at the practising information professional, the book is also suitable for students of library and information science.

Book Industrial Parsing of Software Manuals

Download or read book Industrial Parsing of Software Manuals written by Sutcliffe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The task of language engineering is to develop the technology for building computer systems which can perform useful linguistic tasks such as machine assisted translation, text retrieval, message classification and document summarisation. Such systems often require the use of a parser which can extract specific types of grammatical data from pre-defined classes of input text. There are many parsers already available for use in language engineering systems. However, many different linguistic formalisms and parsing algorithms are employed. Grammatical coverage varies, as does the nature of the syntactic information extracted. Direct comparison between systems is difficult because each is likely to have been evaluated using different test criteria. In this volume, eight different parsers are applied to the same task, that of analysing a set of sentences derived from software instruction manuals. Each parser is presented in a separate chapter. Evaluation of performance is carried out using a standard set of criteria with the results being presented in a set of tables which have the same format for each system. Three additional chapters provide further analysis of the results as well as discussing possible approaches to the standardisation of parse tree data. Five parse trees are provided for each system in an appendix, allowing further direct comparison between systems by the reader. The book will be of interest to students, researchers and practitioners in the areas of computational linguistics, computer science, information retrieval, language engineering, linguistics and machine assisted translation.

Book Information Science in Transition

Download or read book Information Science in Transition written by Alan Gilchrist and published by Facet Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are we at a turning point in digital information? The expansion of the internet was unprecedented; search engines dealt with it in the only way possible - scan as much as they could and throw it all into an inverted index. But now search engines are beginning to experiment with deep web searching and attention to taxonomies, and the Semantic Web is demonstrating how much more can be done with a computer if you give it knowledge. What does this mean for the skills and focus of the information science (or sciences) community? Should information designers and information managers work more closely to create computer based information systems for more effective retrieval? Will information science become part of computer science and does the rise of the term informatics demonstrate the convergence of information science and information technology - a convergence that must surely develop in the years to come? Issues and questions such as these are reflected in this monograph, a collection of essays written by some of the most pre-eminent contributors to the discipline. These peer reviewed perspectives capture insights into advances in, and facets of, information science, a profession in transition. With an introduction from Jack Meadows the key papers are: Meeting the challenge, by Brian Vickery The developing foundations of information science, by David Bawden The last 50 years of knowledge organization, by Stella G Dextre Clarke On the history of evaluation in IR, by Stephen Robertson The information user, by Tom Wilson The sociological turn in information science, by Blaise Cronin From chemical documentation to chemoinformatics, by Peter Willett Health informatics, by Peter A Bath Social informatics and sociotechnical research, by Elisabeth Davenport The evolution of visual information retrieval, by Peter Enser Information policies, by Elizabeth Orna Disparity in professional qualifications and progress in information handling, by Barry Mahon Electronic scholarly publishing and open access, by Charles Oppenheim Social software: fun and games, or business tools?, by Wendy A Warr Bibliometrics to webometrics, by Mike Thelwall. This monograph previously appeared as a special issue of the Journal of Information Science, published by Sage. Readership: Reproduced here as a monograph, this important collection of perspectives on a skill in transition from a prestigious line-up of authors will now be available to information studies students worldwide and to all those working in the information science field.

Book User s Guide to Sears List of Subject Headings

Download or read book User s Guide to Sears List of Subject Headings written by M. P. Satija and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sears List of Subject Headings, an outstanding name amongst subject headings lists, is used all over the world in small and medium sized libraries. It has constantly been revised and kept up to date, both in its methods and contents, by incorporating new subjects and updated organizational machinery. Being handy, simple, inexpensive and always current, the Sears List is a convenient choice for teaching subject headings work in library schools. User’s Guide to Sears List of Subject Headings, 2nd Edition is a companion book which, although based on the 222nd edition of the Sears List, should also be useful to the libraries using some previous edition. It attempts to explain the theoretical foundations, history and application of the Sears List as well as of the subject headings work ion general. It explicates the various hidden potentials of the system to construct subject headings needed for local situations. The object of this small, practical introduction is to be simple, clear and illustrative. The book assumes no prior knowledge either of the Sears List or of subject headings work in general. It is a manual for beginners to understand the importance of vocabulary control, the process of subject analysis, the structure and organization of the Sears List, and the methods to locate, specify and construct subject headings and provide cross references for the public catalogue. Subject headings in the complex areas of languages, literatures, biographical and geographical works are given a chapter each. Review questions and exercises conclude most chapters. A bibliography and glossary are valuable features of this work
