Book Thermomechanics of Composite Structures under High Temperatures

Download or read book Thermomechanics of Composite Structures under High Temperatures written by Yu. I. Dimitrienko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering book presents new models for the thermomechanical behavior of composite materials and structures taking into account internal physico-chemical transformations such as thermodecomposition, sublimation and melting at high temperatures (up to 3000 K). It is of great importance for the design of new thermostable materials and for the investigation of reliability and fire safety of composite structures. It also supports the investigation of interaction of composites with laser irradiation and the design of heat-shield systems. Structural methods are presented for calculating the effective mechanical and thermal properties of matrices, fibres and unidirectional, reinforced by dispersed particles and textile composites, in terms of properties of their constituent phases. Useful calculation methods are developed for characteristics such as the rate of thermomechanical erosion of composites under high-speed flow and the heat deformation of composites with account of chemical shrinkage. The author expansively compares modeling results with experimental data, and readers will find unique experimental results on mechanical and thermal properties of composites under temperatures up to 3000 K. Chapters show how the behavior of composite shells under high temperatures is simulated by the finite-element method and so cylindrical and axisymmetric composite shells and composite plates are investigated under local high-temperature heating. The book will be of interest to researchers and to engineers designing composite structures, and invaluable to materials scientists developing advanced performance thermostable materials.

Book High Temperature Performance of Polymer Composites

Download or read book High Temperature Performance of Polymer Composites written by Yu Bai and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors explain the changes in the thermophysical and thermomechanical properties of polymer composites under elevated temperatures and fire conditions. Using microscale physical and chemical concepts they allow researchers to find reliable solutions to their engineering needs on the macroscale. In a unique combination of experimental results and quantitative models, a framework is developed to realistically predict the behavior of a variety of polymer composite materials over a wide range of thermal and mechanical loads. In addition, the authors treat extreme fire scenarios up to more than 1000?C for two hours, presenting heat-protection methods to improve the fire resistance of composite materials and full-scale structural members, and discuss their performance after fire exposure. Thanks to the microscopic approach, the developed models are valid for a variety of polymer composites and structural members, making this work applicable to a wide audience, including materials scientists, polymer chemists, engineering scientists in industry, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and those working in the industry of civil infrastructure.

Book High Temperature Mechanical Behaviour of Ceramic Composites

Download or read book High Temperature Mechanical Behaviour of Ceramic Composites written by Karl Jakus and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-06-28 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Temperature Mechanical Behavior of Ceramic Composites provides an up-to-date comprehensive coverage of the mechanical behavior of ceramic matrix composites at elevated temperatures. Topics include both short-term behavior (strength, fracture toughness and R-curve behavior) and long-term behavior (creep, creep-fatigue, delayed failure and lifetime). Emphasis is on a review of fundamentals and on the mechanics and mechanisms underlying properties. This is the first time that complete information of elevated temperature behavior of ceramic composites has ever been compacted together in a single volume. Of particular importance is that each chapter, written by internationally recognized experts, includes a substantial review component enabling the new material to be put in proper perspective. Shanti Nair is Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Karl Jakus is Professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Book Nonmetallic Materials and Composites at Low Temperatures

Download or read book Nonmetallic Materials and Composites at Low Temperatures written by A. F. Clark and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cryogenics is an emerging technology filled with promises. Many cryogenic systems demand the use of nonmetallics and composites for adequate or increased performance. Thermal and electrical insulations, potting for superconducting magnets' mechanical sta bility, and composite structures appear to be some of the most significant applications. Research on nonmetallics at cryogenic temperatures has not progressed to the degree of research on metals. Nor can room temperature research be extrapolated to low tempera tures; most polymers undergo a phase transformation to the glassy state below room temperature. Research by producers, for the most part, has not been prac tical, because, except for LNG applications, the market for large material sales is not imminent. There are, however, many government stimulated developmental programs. Research on nonmetallics thus is dictated by development project needs, which require studies orien ted toward prototype hardware and specific objectives. As a result, research continuity suffers. Under these conditions, periodic topical conferences on this subject are needed. Industry and uni versity studies must be encouraged. Designers and project research material specialists need to exchange experiences and data. Low temperature-oriented research groups, such as the National Bureau of Standards and the Institute for Technical Physics - Karlsruhe, must contribute by assisting with fundamentals, interpreting proj ect data, and contributing to project programs through their materials research.

Book Effects of Thermal and Environmental Exposure on the Mechanical Properties of Graphite polyimide Composites

Download or read book Effects of Thermal and Environmental Exposure on the Mechanical Properties of Graphite polyimide Composites written by M. P. Hanson and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composites were exposed in circulating and static air environments up to 589 K for a maximum of 1000 hours. Composites of HT-S, HM-S, Thornel 50S, and Fortafil 5-Y fiber and a new addition type polyimide resin were laminated in a matched-die mold. Flexural strengths, flexural modulus, and interlaminar shear strengths were determined at 297, 533, and 598 K after various durations of exposure. Composite and fiber weight loss characteristics were determined by isothermal gravimetric analysis in air. Properties of composites exposed and tested at the environment temperatures were compared with those determined under short-term exposure. A new short beam interlaminar shear fixture is described. Environmental effects of long-term ambient temperature exposure on the elevated temperature mechanical properties of graphite/polyimide composites are presented.

Book High Temperature Ceramic Matrix Composites

Download or read book High Temperature Ceramic Matrix Composites written by Walter Krenkel and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 2001 with total page 1044 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extreme high temperature stability and damage tolerance of materials and components required for space, terrestrial, energetic and many other applications can only be achieved by ceramic materials. All over the world research is going on to develop ceramics with quasiductile behaviour. The materials with the highest potential for high temperature applications are fibre reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CMC). The international conference HT-CMC 4 in Munich will continue the tradition of its successful predecessor meetings held in Bordeaux (France, 1993), Santa Barbara (USA, 1995) and Osaka (Japan, 1998). This conference series has been recognized as the central meeting event in high temperature CMC science and technology and demonstrates the great interest in research and development on reinforced ceramics. The Proceedings of this conference will therefore be a valuable reference for every materials scientist or engineer involved in this field of high-tech materials development.

Book Thermal Mechanical Response of a Polymer Matrix Composite at Cryogenic Temperatures

Download or read book Thermal Mechanical Response of a Polymer Matrix Composite at Cryogenic Temperatures written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order for polymeric-matrix composites to be considered for use as structural materials in the next generation of space transportation systems, the mechanical behavior of these materials at cryogenic temperatures must be investigated. This paper presents experimental data on the residual mechanical properties of a carbon-fiber polymeric composite, IM7/PETI-5, both before and after aging. Both tension and compression modulus and strength were measured at room temperature, -196C, and -269 C on five different laminate configurations. One set of specimens was aged isothermally for 576 hours at -184 C in an unconstrained state. Another set of corresponding specimens was aged under constant uniaxial strain for 576 hours at -184 C. Based on the experimental data presented, it is shown that trends in stiffness and strength that result from changes in temperature are not always smooth and consistent. Moreover, it is shown that loading mode and direction are significant for both stiffness and strength, and aging at cryogenic temperature while under load can alter the mechanical properties of pristine, un-aged laminates made of IM7/PETI-5 material.Whitley, Karen S. and Gates, Thomas S.Langley Research CenterTEMPERATURE EFFECTS; POLYMER MATRIX COMPOSITES; CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURE; COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH; TRENDS; STIFFNESS; SPACE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM; ROOM TEMPERATURE; LOADS (FORCES); CARBON FIBERS
