Book excerpt: Polymer Yearbook 13 brings together reviews and information on the progress of polymer science worldwide, including useful and topical information such as a list of new publications in polymer science and a compilation of dissertation abstracts. This volume includes reviews of key aspects of polymer science, including contributions from Russia, and details of important publications., This volume also contains reviews on state-of-the-art Japanese research presented at the annual Spring and Fall meetings of the Japanese Polymer Science Society. The aim of this section is to make information on the progress of Japanese polymer science, and on topics of current interest to polymer scientists in Japan, more easily available worldwide.

Book Experimental Study and Constitutive Modeling of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites

Download or read book Experimental Study and Constitutive Modeling of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites written by Ge He and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation proposes a combined viscoelasticity-viscoplasticity-anisotropic damage internal state variable (ISV) model for fiber reinforced polymer composites. In particular, the viscoelastic behavior of composites is modeled by using a generalized Maxwell equation in which the material stress relaxation in the elastic region is captured by the introduction of time dependent ISVs. The viscoplastic flow of the composites is assumed to be solely contributed by its polymer matrix and fiber-matrix interphase, and three ISVs proposed in our previous polymer modeling work are utilized here with the purpose of capturing the post-yielding softening, hardening and Bauschinger effect of the polymer matrix phase. The anisotropic damage state of the composites is described by a second order variable whose principal components physically representing the net area reduction (due to microscopic cracks/voids) of material planes. The total damage variable is further decomposed into three components corresponding to the three common damage mechanisms in fiber reinforced composites, that is, fiber breakage, interphase deterioration and matrix cracking. The progressive damage process of each phase of the composites is considered as consecutive events of microvoids/cracks nucleation, growth and coalescence and each of them is governed by corresponding ISV evolution equation. The proposed composites model is then implemented into Matlab codes for numerical analysis. Two different types of composite materials, polyamide 6,6 reinforced with glass fibers (PA66-GF) and epoxy reinforced with glass fibers (EP-GF) are used for model calibration and validation. PA66-GF is used to test the viscoelasticity and damage evolution of the model and EP-GF is utilized for temperature dependence and interfacial effect. Finally, good agreement is achieved between the experimental results and model predictions.

Book High Temperature Performance of Polymer Composites

Download or read book High Temperature Performance of Polymer Composites written by Yu Bai and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors explain the changes in the thermophysical and thermomechanical properties of polymer composites under elevated temperatures and fire conditions. Using microscale physical and chemical concepts they allow researchers to find reliable solutions to their engineering needs on the macroscale. In a unique combination of experimental results and quantitative models, a framework is developed to realistically predict the behavior of a variety of polymer composite materials over a wide range of thermal and mechanical loads. In addition, the authors treat extreme fire scenarios up to more than 1000?C for two hours, presenting heat-protection methods to improve the fire resistance of composite materials and full-scale structural members, and discuss their performance after fire exposure. Thanks to the microscopic approach, the developed models are valid for a variety of polymer composites and structural members, making this work applicable to a wide audience, including materials scientists, polymer chemists, engineering scientists in industry, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and those working in the industry of civil infrastructure.

Book Rate Dependent Constitutive Models for Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites

Download or read book Rate Dependent Constitutive Models for Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literature survey was conducted to assess the state-of-the-art in rate dependent constitutive models for continuous fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite (PMC) materials. Several recent models which include formulations for describing plasticity, viscoelasticity, viscoplasticity, and rate-dependent phenomenon such as creep and stress relaxation are outlined and compared. When appropriate, these comparisons include brief descriptions of the mathematical formulations, the test procedures required for generating material constants, and details of available data comparing test results to analytical predictions.
