This modification lead to striking successes for the model. Almost without exception, the ground state spins of odd nuclei were found to be cor rectly predicted. Furthermore several other features of nuclei such as the occur rence of isomeric states and the values of magnetic dipole moments were explained, at least qualitatively. However the model completely failed to explain the large values of observed electric quadrupole moments and certain regularities in nuclear spectra, especially of rare earth nuclei. 4. 1950-1953. The emphatic success of the shell-model modified by a spin orbit force gave the necessary confidence and incentive to physicists to apply the model in detail to individual nuclei. Guided by parallel calculations in atomic spectroscopy, considerable effort was devoted to computing spectra of levels of nuclear systems with the so-called "Intermediate Coupling Model" in which the independent particle motion is considered to be perturbed by central particle particle interactions and spin-orbit forces. Computational labour restricts such calculations to nuclei near closed shells, say within four particles or holes of closed shells. This explains why only light nuclei (A

Book excerpt: Reissue of Encyclopedia of Physics / Handbuch der Physik, Volume VIa The mechanical response of solids was first reduced to an organized science of fairly general scope in the nineteenth century. The theory of small elastic deformations is in the main the creation of CAUCHY, who, correcting and simplifying the work of NAVIER and POISSON, through an astounding application of conjoined scholarship, originality, and labor greatly extended in breadth the shallowest aspects of the treatments of par ticular kinds of bodies by GALILEO, LEIBNIZ, JAMES BERNOULLI, PARENT, DANIEL BER NOULLI, EULER, and COULOMB. Linear elasticity became a branch of mathematics, culti vated wherever there were mathematicians. The magisterial treatise of LOVE in its second edition, 1906 - clear, compact, exhaustive, and learned - stands as the summary of the classical theory. It is one of the great "gaslight works" that in BOCHNER'S words! "either do not have any adequate successor[ s] . . . or, at least, refuse to be super seded . . . ; and so they have to be reprinted, in ever increasing numbers, for active research and reference", as long as State and Society shall permit men to learn mathe matics by, for, and of men's minds. Abundant experimentation on solids was done during the same century. Usually the materials arising in nature, with which experiment most justly concerns itself, do not stoop easily to the limitations classical elasticity posits.

Book Thermodynamics and the Kinetic Theory of Gases

Download or read book Thermodynamics and the Kinetic Theory of Gases written by Wolfgang Pauli and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1977 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These lectures covering topics basic to classical and modern physics were given by Pauli at the Zurich Federal Institute, where they were transcribed by his collaborators. They have now been translated and edited for English publication, and are introduced by Victor Weisskopf, who writes as follows: "It is often said that scientific texts quickly become obsolete. Why are the Pauli lectures brought to the public today, when some of them were given as long as twenty years ago? The reason is simple: Pauli's way of presenting physics is never out of date. His famous article on the foundations of quantum mechanics appeared in 1933 in the German encyclopedia Handbuch der Physik.Twenty-five years later it reappeared practically unchanged in a new edition, whereas most other contributions to this encyclopedia had to be completely rewritten. The reason for this remarkable fact lies in Pauli's style, which is commensurate to the greatness of its subject in its clarity and impact. Style in scientific writing is a quality that today is on the point of vanishing. The pressure of fast publication is so great that people rush into print with hurriedly written papers and books that show little concern for careful formulation of ideas. Mathematical and instrumental techniques have become complicated and difficult today; they demand so much skill and training that most of the effort of writing and learning is devoted to the acquisition of this skill instead of insight into important concepts. Essential ideas of physics are often lost in the dense forest of mathematical reasoning. This situation need not be so. Pauli's lectures show how physical ideas can be presented clearly and in good mathematical form, without being hidden in formalistic expertise."
