Book excerpt: This study utilizes differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to characterize the thermodynamics, kinetics and crystallization b processes of a new Pt57.3Cu14.6Ni5.3P22.8 bulk metallic glass forming alloy. The heat capacity of the alloy is measured for the crystalline, glassy, and supercooled liquid phases. This data is used to obtain thermodynamic driving forces for crystallization and quantify the thermodynamic fragility. Kinetic properties of the alloy are investigated by observing the glass transition under different heating rates. The heating rate dependence of the glass transition is then used to calculate the kinetic fragility and estimate how the material's viscosity varies with temperature. DSC is also used to observe the crystallization event at variety of temperatures and generate a Time-Temperature-Transformation (TTT) diagram for crystallization. The crystallization results and TTT diagram are compared with thermodynamic and kinetic data using classical nucleation theory, and different models for crystallization are discussed.

Book excerpt: This thesis consists of an in-depth study of investigating microstructure-property relationships in bulk metallic glasses using a novel quantitative approach by which influence of the second phase features on mechanical properties can be independently and systematically analyzed. The author evaluates and optimizes the elastic and plastic deformation, as well as the overall toughness of cellular honeycombs under in-plane compression and porous heterostructures under uniaxial tension. The study reveals three major deformation zones in cellular metallic glass structures, where deformation changes from collective buckling showing non-linear elasticity to localized failure exhibiting a brittle-like deformation, and finally to global sudden failure with negligible plasticity as the length to thickness ratio of the ligaments increases. The author found that spacing and size of the pores, the pore configuration within the matrix, and the overall width of the sample determines the extent of deformation, where the optimized values are attained for pore diameter to spacing ratio of one with AB type pore stacking.

Over a large temperature range, thermal effects can be quickly identified and the relevant temperature and the characteristic caloric values determined using substance quantities in the mg range. Measurement values obtained by DSC allow heat capacity, heat of transition, kinetic data, purity and glass transition to be determined. DSC curves serve to identify substances, to set up phase diagrams and to determine degrees of crystallinity. This book provides, for the first time, an overall description of the most impor tant applications of Differential Scanning Calorimetry. Prerequisites for reliable measurement results, optimum evaluation of the measurement curves and esti mation of the uncertainties of measurement are, however, the knowledge of the theoretical bases of DSC, a precise calibration of the calorimeter and the correct analysis of the measurement curve. The largest part of this book deals with these basic aspects: The theory of DSC is discussed for both heat flux and power compensated instruments; temperature calibration and caloric calibration are described on the basis of thermodynamic principles.
