Download or read book Physical Properties and Thermodynamic Behaviour of Minerals written by Ekhard K.H. Salje and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-01-31 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role played by earth sciences in the scientific community has changed considerably during this century. Since the revolutionary discoveries of global processes such as plate tectonics, there has been an increasing awareness of just how fundamental many of the mechanisms which dominate in these processes depend on the physical properties of the materials of which the earth is made. One of the prime objectives of mineral sciences is now to understand and predict these properties in a truly quantitative manner. The macroscopic properties which are of most immediate interest in this context fall within the conventional definitions of thermodynamics, magnetism, elasticity, dielectric susceptibilities, conductivity etc. These properties reflect the microscopic contributions, at an atomistic level, of harmonic and anharmonic lattice vibrations, ionic and electronic transport as well as a great variety of ordering and clustering phenomena. The advances made by solid state physicists and chemists in defining the underlying phenomena lnvolved in the thermal evolution of materials have stimulated major new research initiatives within the Earth Sciences. Earth Scientists have combined to form active groups within the wider community of solid state and materials scientists working towards a better understanding of those physical processes which govern not only the behaviour of simple model compounds but also that of complex materials like minerals. Concomitant with this change in direction has come an increasing awareness of the need to use the typical working tools of other disciplines.

Download or read book The Chemistry of Chlorine Bromine Iodine and Astatine written by A. J. Downs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chemistry of Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine and Astatine is a special edition that contains selected sections and addresses the needs of specialists in their respective fields. The text describes the general atomic properties of non-metals, particularly the halogens, as being the perfect series to study, both in physical and chemical terms. The book explains that the combination of the atomic properties implies excellent electronegativity values for the halogen atoms. The text also cites some behavior characteristics of halogens that are irregular, such as chlorine and bromine are similar but differ from fluorine on one side and iodine on the other. The book also compares the general methods of producing chlorine, bromine, or iodine by 1) oxidation of halide derivatives or 2) reduction of compounds of the halogens in positive oxidation states. The text then reviews the application of a complex valence theory that raises difficult questions about the bonding in halogen-oxygen molecules. The book also explains the biological behavior of astatine that accumulates in the liver or in the thyroid gland depending on the method of administration either as a radiocolloid or as a true solution. The book is suitable for molecular biologists and researchers, molecular chemists, and medical researchers.
Download or read book Binary Fluorides written by Donald T. Hawkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coverage For some time, we have contemplated a comprehensive review of the structures and force fields of the binary fluorides. This bibliography of 1498 references marks the first step of that effort. We are pub lishing this material now rather than waiting until the review is complete some two years hence because we believe that the information already accumulated will be of immediate use to a broad spectrum of researchers. Anyone ambitious enough to read through all the articles on binary fluorides will find that the struc tures and force fields of many of these molecules are at present unknown. For example, it has not been clearly established to which point group(s) the lanthanide trifluorides should be assigned. There remain interesting problems relating to the role of Jahn-Teller and pseudo-Jahn-Teller distortions in some of the transition metal fluorides such as VF , MoF , ReF , and ReF , to name only a few. One s s 6 7 also finds fascinating examples of large-amplitude motions, or pseudorotations, as they are often called, in such molecules as XeF 6, I F 7, and PF 5' For those binary fluorides whose equilibrium geometries are precisely known, there still exists the problem of accurately determining the harmonic force field. In a few cases, most notably the Group VA trifluorides, there has been some attempt made at extracting the cubic and quartic contributions to the force field.
Download or read book Introduction to Applied Mineralogy written by Jens Götze and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook teaches important material and technological fundamentals in various technical systems and applied geoscientific fields. Beginning with the mineralogical characteristics of selected non-metallic raw materials and industrial minerals, this book presents the connections between properties and industrial applications and discusses the environment-relevant aspects as well as problems of biomineralogy. An introduction is given to important mineralogical and physico-chemical aspects of ceramic materials such as silicate ceramics, glass, cement, refractory materials as well as an overview about material synthesis. This makes it the first textbook to present the fundamentals of applied mineralogy as a material-related geoscience in a compact form and to show important bridges to industrial issues and approaches to solutions. It is aimed primarily at undergraduate students of geosciences and materials science, but is also suitable for related disciplines and practical applications.
