Book The Thermohaline Finestructure of the Ocean

Download or read book The Thermohaline Finestructure of the Ocean written by K. N. Fedorov and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Thermohaline Finestructure of the Ocean is a five-chapter text that describes the fine-scale stratification phenomenon in the ocean and the physical processes that participate in its formation and govern its evolution. After an introduction to the concept of thermohaline finestructure of the ocean, this book goes on presenting some methodological aspects in connection with the finestructure measurements in the ocean. The next chapters examine the complex interrelations between the fine-scale stratification of the ocean water. The remaining chapters explore several important physical processes, such as molecular diffusion, convection, turbulence, internal gravity waves, inertial motions, and mean currents. This book is written for physical oceanographers and specialists in other related branches of research.

Book Vertical and Horizontal Thermal Structures in the Sea

Download or read book Vertical and Horizontal Thermal Structures in the Sea written by Eugene Cecil LaFond and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sea temperature structure of the upper layers was investigated by the use of a thermistor chain towed off the southern extremity of Baja California, Mexico, which revealed vertical and horizontal motion, large scale turbulence, and possible Doppler effects. The thermoclines were categorized in four types, smooth, normal, rough, and irregular. The power spectrum of vertical oscillation in the thermocline showed small peaks at wavelengths of 0.3 and 0.7 mile. The slopes of isotherms were determined from a study of over 65,000 data samplings. (Author).

Book Atlas of Monthly Mean Sea Surface and Subsurface Temperature and Depth of the Top of the Thermocline

Download or read book Atlas of Monthly Mean Sea Surface and Subsurface Temperature and Depth of the Top of the Thermocline written by Margaret K. Robinson and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interim Atlas of the North Pacific and Adjacent Seas presents monthly charts of temperature for the sea surface and, for the first time, the subsurface levels at 100 ft. increments to 400 ft. The atlas is based, primarily, on bathythermography (BT) data collected at Scripps Institution of Oceanography during the past 29 years from U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships, and ships of scientific institutions. Book Regional Oceanography

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matthias Tomczak
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2013-10-22
  • ISBN : 1483287610
  • Pages : 437 pages

Download or read book Regional Oceanography written by Matthias Tomczak and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covers the traditional range of topics in regional oceanography. An important aspect of work is its novel approach to a description of the features which give each ocean region its character. The two core principles are the use of the most modern database for all maps of regional distributions of properties and a discussion of all observed features within a frame of reference developed from ocean dynamics, rather than based on the simple geographical approach. The ocean's role in climate variability and climate change is described in detail. The book also includes an evaluation of all major international research projects such as FGGE, IIOE and TOGA. The SI system is used throughout. The use of modern data and inclusion of the oceanographic literature up to 1992 and early 1993 make it a useful reference text.

Book Dynamical Oceanography

    Book Details:
  • Author : Henk A. Dijkstra
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2008-10-01
  • ISBN : 3540763759
  • Pages : 408 pages

Download or read book Dynamical Oceanography written by Henk A. Dijkstra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a mathematical introduction to the theory of large-scale ocean circulation. It is accessible for readers with an elementary knowledge of mathematics and physics, including continuum mechanics and solution methods for ordinary differential equations. At the end of each chapter several exercises are formulated. Many of these are aimed to further develop methodological skills and to get familiar with the physical concepts. New material is introduced in only a few of these exercises. Fully worked out answers to all exercises can be downloaded from the book’s web site.

Book The Barrier Zones in the Ocean

Download or read book The Barrier Zones in the Ocean written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-07-06 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geochemical barrier zones play an important role in determining various physical systems and characteristics of the oceans, e.g. hydrodynamics, salinity, temperature and light. In this book, each of the 40 barrier zones covered are illustrated and defined by physical-chemical parameters. Among the topics discussed are the processes of inflow, transformation and precipitation of the sedimentary layer of the open oceans and more restricted areas such as the Baltic, Black and Mediterranean Seas. This well-illustrated book may serve as the basis for courses such as "Marine Geochemistry" or "Ocean Usage" and can be useful to researchers in the fields of geology, geography, marine chemistry, geoecology and hydrochemistry.

Book Objective Definition of the Thermocline

Download or read book Objective Definition of the Thermocline written by N. E. J. Boston and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An objective method of analyzing bathythermograph data is discussed. A simple analysis of finite differences provides objective definition of the top, bottom and center of the thermocline. Secondary features such as transients, multiple thermoclines and inversions are examined in the light of this method and objectively analyzed with some success. A general program for the efficient handling of bathythermograph data is suggested and computer flow diagrams given. (Author).

The comprehensive coverage of this book encompasses the properties of seawater which affect life in the ocean, classification of marine environments and organisms, phytoplankton and zooplankton, marine food webs, larger marine animals (marine mammals, seabirds and fish), life on the seafloor, and the way in which humans affect marine ecosystems. The second edition has been thoroughly updated, including much data available for the first time in a book at this level. There is also a new chapter on human impacts - from harvesting vast amounts of fish, pollution, and deliberately or accidentally transferring marine organisms to new environments. This book complements the Open University Oceanography Series, also published by Butterworth-Heinemann, and is a set text for the Open University third level course, S330. - A leading undergraduate text - New chapter on human impacts - a highly topical subject - Expanded colour plate section
