Book excerpt: A brief review of several thermionic nuclear power plants leads to the conclusion that the in-core concept is the most practical and useful system for space applications. Fundamental considerations indicate that emitter temperatures from 1500 to 1900 deg C are required for this concept, and that the high work function refractory metals are the best electrode materials for achieving the required performance and lifetime at these temperatures. The analytical and experimental technology developed for systematically defining the optimum materials and operatlng conditions is described, along with the significance of the experimental results obtained. These results have shown that the required performance can be obtained with the elementary cesium vapor diode converter. It was also shown that impurities cause pronounced effects on both performance and lifetime, and that their suppression or controlled utilization is an important aspect of the present approach. Book excerpt: Efforts were continued on a program to determine life and reliability of a thermionic energy converter designed for operation in a thermal reactor, and to refine the converter design to eliminate causes of failure. Design modifications to permit the inclusion of a fuel sleeve in the emitter of the A-1272 were made, and other modifications to improve converter performance were completed. High-stress and parametric tests were conducted. Detailed fabrication procedures were perfected. A system was established for recording all significant dimensions of converter components during fabrication; these data will be used to determine the extent of structural changes occuring throughout converter life. Twelve converters were tested for high-stress and performance limits, 4 were subjected to extensive life tests and one to preliminary life testing. The four converters, without nuclear fuel, have operated for a total of 1248 hours on life test without failure. The first fueled converter failed during initial tests as a result of a thermal short caused by the evaporation of fuel onto heater parts. (Author).

Book excerpt: The problem of applying nuclear energy to segments of the United States economy other than central station electric power, specifically to small portable power supplies used for transportation purposes, is treated. A survey of various energy conversion devices suitable for use in mobile power units is presented. Included also is a comparison of a number of energy source-converter combinations for application as portable power units. It is concluded that storage of nuclear energy in chemical fuels is the only feasible way of approaching the performance of present day, internal combustion engines with hydrocarbon fuels in a future system dependent totally on nuclear energy. A preliminary survey of likely chemicals fuels for such a nuclear-chemical energy distribution system is presented. Materials which approach hydrocarbons on an energy density basis are light elements in the first three periods of the periodic table having atomic weights below about 40. With this criterion and based on cost, availability and ease of handling, magnesium, aluminum, and silicon are materials which look attractive as mass quantity fuels for a nuclear-chemical energy cycle. Some discussion of the fuel processing cycles and possible types of converters for these fuels is also included.
