Book The Single Crystal Synthesis and Some Properties of Aluminum Nitride

Download or read book The Single Crystal Synthesis and Some Properties of Aluminum Nitride written by Cortland O. Dugger and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final report, which covers the period from March 1972 to 30 June 1975, discusses some conditions for the synthesis of aluminum nitride (AIN) single crystals from solution. The solvent systems used are unique and novel. The average sized, water-white, bipyramidal AIN single crystals reproducibly grown from solution only were 1.1 mm long X 0.3 mm wide. The average sized, AIN single crystals grown from a combined solution-vapor reaction technique were 4mm long X 3 mm wide X 2mm thick. The in-house quantitative evaluation of the crystals was restricted to Laue patterns and emission spectrometry only. In Appendices A, B, C, and D, general discussions of solution growth, other AIN growth methods, some properties of AIN, and a very brief discussion of the newly emerging surface acoustic wave (SAW) device technology and why the use of AIN is considered a good electro-acoutic material in SAW devices are presented. Download or read book Polyimides written by Doug Wilson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-23 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last twenty years or so have seen a flurry of activity in the synthesis of new polymer systems. This interest has developed largely as a result of the increased need for advanced materials. Despite the emergence of a number of outstanding polymers, it is the polyimides that have captured the imagination of scientists and engineers alike as materials that offer outstanding promise for the high technology applic ations of the future. The reputation of the polyimide has been established on the bases of outstanding thermal stability, excellent mechanical properties and the ability to be fabricated into useful articles. Polyimides offer a versatility unparalleled in most other classes of macromolecules. Polymers can be prepared from a variety of starting materials, by a variety of synthetic routes. They can be tailor-made to suit specific applications. By judicious choice of starting materials, polymers can be made that offer variations in such properties as glass transition tempera ture, oxidative stability, toughness, adhesion, and permeability. It is this versatility that has led to the use of polyimides in a wide variety of applications. The electronics industry makes extensive use of poly imide films in, ior example, semiconductor applications. The leading polymer matrices for high temperature advanced composites are polyimides. High temperature adhesive systems for the bonding of metals or composites are often based on polyimides. In addition, polyimides are now finding use as fibres, foams, sealents and even membranes for the low energy separation of industrial gases.

Book excerpt: Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry II, Nine Volume Set reviews and examines topics of relevance to today’s inorganic chemists. Covering more interdisciplinary and high impact areas, Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry II includes biological inorganic chemistry, solid state chemistry, materials chemistry, and nanoscience. The work is designed to follow on, with a different viewpoint and format, from our 1973 work, Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry, edited by Bailar, Emeléus, Nyholm, and Trotman-Dickenson, which has received over 2,000 citations. The new work will also complement other recent Elsevier works in this area, Comprehensive Coordination Chemistry and Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry, to form a trio of works covering the whole of modern inorganic chemistry. Chapters are designed to provide a valuable, long-standing scientific resource for both advanced students new to an area and researchers who need further background or answers to a particular problem on the elements, their compounds, or applications. Chapters are written by teams of leading experts, under the guidance of the Volume Editors and the Editors-in-Chief. The articles are written at a level that allows undergraduate students to understand the material, while providing active researchers with a ready reference resource for information in the field. The chapters will not provide basic data on the elements, which is available from many sources (and the original work), but instead concentrate on applications of the elements and their compounds. Provides a comprehensive review which serves to put many advances in perspective and allows the reader to make connections to related fields, such as: biological inorganic chemistry, materials chemistry, solid state chemistry and nanoscience Inorganic chemistry is rapidly developing, which brings about the need for a reference resource such as this that summarise recent developments and simultaneously provide background information Forms the new definitive source for researchers interested in elements and their applications; completely replacing the highly cited first edition, which published in 1973

Book Fabrication of Heat Resistant and Plastic Formable Silicon Nitride

Download or read book Fabrication of Heat Resistant and Plastic Formable Silicon Nitride written by Toshiyuki Nishimura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, improvements in the heat resistance of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics using grain boundary control and in plasticity at high temperatures using grain size control in order to reduce the cost of shaping Si3N4 are described. The heat resistance of Si3N4 is improved by mixing a slight amount of sintering additive as an impurity into the original material powder. The author presents his findings on the high heat resistance of Si3N4. The author also develops a new fabrication method for Si3N4 nano-ceramics that produces high plastic formability. The method developed offers two improved points in grinding and sintering processes. The author found that the plastic formability of Si3N4 nanoceramics is dependent on load stress; the results of his research are detailed in this book.

Book Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Disordered Materials

Download or read book Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Disordered Materials written by Carlo Massobrio and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-22 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a unique reference work in the area of atomic-scale simulation of glasses. For the first time, a highly selected panel of about 20 researchers provides, in a single book, their views, methodologies and applications on the use of molecular dynamics as a tool to describe glassy materials. The book covers a wide range of systems covering "traditional" network glasses, such as chalcogenides and oxides, as well as glasses for applications in the area of phase change materials. The novelty of this work is the interplay between molecular dynamics methods (both at the classical and first-principles level) and the structure of materials for which, quite often, direct experimental structural information is rather scarce or absent. The book features specific examples of how quite subtle features of the structure of glasses can be unraveled by relying on the predictive power of molecular dynamics, used in connection with a realistic description of forces.

Book Advances in Cryogenic Engineering Materials

Download or read book Advances in Cryogenic Engineering Materials written by A. F. Clark and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third International Cryogenic Materials Conference (ICMC) was held in Madison, Wisconsin, in conjunction with the Cryogenic Engineering Conference (CEC) in August 1979. The University of Wisconsin hosted the two conferences in an excellent manner and deserves special recognition and praise. The synergism produced by conducting the two conferences simultaneously continues to be strong. Materials remain a demanding challenge and, in some cases, an obstacle to effective application of cryogenic technology. The association of materials specialists and cryogenic engineers every other year centers their attention on the most needed areas of research. The present ICMC Board met during the conference and elected two new members, E. W. Collings (U. S.) and D. Evans (England). The board voted to conduct two smaller, special-topic conferences in 1980. These are Filamentary A15 Superconductors, which was held at Brookhaven National Laboratories, Upton, New York in May 1980, and Fundamentals of Nonmetallics and Composites at Low Temperatures, held in Geneva, Switzerland in August 1980. The 1981 CEC/ICMC will be held August 10 through 14 in San Diego, California.
