Book Thermal Mechanical Response of a Polymer Matrix Composite at Cryogenic Temperatures

Download or read book Thermal Mechanical Response of a Polymer Matrix Composite at Cryogenic Temperatures written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order for polymeric-matrix composites to be considered for use as structural materials in the next generation of space transportation systems, the mechanical behavior of these materials at cryogenic temperatures must be investigated. This paper presents experimental data on the residual mechanical properties of a carbon-fiber polymeric composite, IM7/PETI-5, both before and after aging. Both tension and compression modulus and strength were measured at room temperature, -196C, and -269 C on five different laminate configurations. One set of specimens was aged isothermally for 576 hours at -184 C in an unconstrained state. Another set of corresponding specimens was aged under constant uniaxial strain for 576 hours at -184 C. Based on the experimental data presented, it is shown that trends in stiffness and strength that result from changes in temperature are not always smooth and consistent. Moreover, it is shown that loading mode and direction are significant for both stiffness and strength, and aging at cryogenic temperature while under load can alter the mechanical properties of pristine, un-aged laminates made of IM7/PETI-5 material.Whitley, Karen S. and Gates, Thomas S.Langley Research CenterTEMPERATURE EFFECTS; POLYMER MATRIX COMPOSITES; CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURE; COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH; TRENDS; STIFFNESS; SPACE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM; ROOM TEMPERATURE; LOADS (FORCES); CARBON FIBERS

Book Environmental Degradation of Industrial Composites

Download or read book Environmental Degradation of Industrial Composites written by Celine A Mahieux and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-12-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to their low density and tailored properties, polymer matrix composites are attractive candidates for a large number of industrial applications ranging from aerospace to transportation and energy. However, the behaviour of polymer-based materials is strongly affected by a number of environmental factors. Environmental Degradation in Industrial Composites provides vital information on the effects of environmental factors such as temperature, liquid and gas exposure, electrical fields and radiations, and how micro- and micromechanical calculations during design and manufacture must take these effects into account. The book concludes with reviews on standard and specific testing methods for the various environmental factors and their combinations, helping mechanical/materials engineers and specifiers to predict possible changes due to environmental conditions. Each chapter is supplemented by industrial case studies to help in the understanding of degradation of composites in real life situations. This book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracyThis book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracy

Book Hygrothermal Response of Polymer Matrix Composite Materials

Download or read book Hygrothermal Response of Polymer Matrix Composite Materials written by Donald F. Adams and published by . This book was released on 1979* with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-dimensional, generalized plane strain, finite element analysis of the stress states in the individual fibers and surrounding matrix of a unidirectionally reinforced composite material was developed. The fibers are modeled as elastic but anisotropic; the matrix is modeled as isotropic, but elastoplastic. Thermal and moisture absorption histories as well as temperature - and moisture-dependent material properties are included. A complete finite element computer program, an associated plot package, and extensive numerical results are available. Experimental work was conducted using unreinforced (neat resin), castings of Hercules 3501-6 epoxy matrix, as well as AS/3501-6 graphite/epoxy matrix, and S2/3501-6 glass/epoxy unidirectional composites. Axial and transverse tensile tests as well as torsional shear tests were performed, under various temperatures and moisture conditions. Experimental results and comparisons with micromechanics predictions are summarized, with references given to various conference and journal publications for detailed information. (Author).

Book Virtual Testing and Predictive Modeling

Download or read book Virtual Testing and Predictive Modeling written by Bahram Farahmand and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-29 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thematerialsusedinmanufacturingtheaerospace, aircraft, automobile, andnuclear parts have inherent aws that may grow under uctuating load environments during the operational phase of the structural hardware. The design philosophy, material selection, analysis approach, testing, quality control, inspection, and manufacturing are key elements that can contribute to failure prevention and assure a trouble-free structure. To have a robust structure, it must be designed to withstand the envir- mental load throughout its service life, even when the structure has pre-existing aws or when a part of the structure has already failed. If the design philosophy of the structure is based on the fail-safe requirements, or multiple load path design, partial failure of a structural component due to crack propagation is localized and safely contained or arrested. For that reason, proper inspection technique must be scheduled for reusable parts to detect the amount and rate of crack growth, and the possible need for repairing or replacement of the part. An example of a fail-sa- designed structure with crack-arrest feature, common to all aircraft structural parts, is the skin-stiffened design con guration. However, in other cases, the design p- losophy has safe-life or single load path feature, where analysts must demonstrate that parts have adequate life during their service operation and the possibility of catastrophic failure is remote. For example, all pressurized vessels that have single load path feature are classi ed as high-risk parts. During their service operation, these tanks may develop cracks, which will grow gradually in a stable manner.
