This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 1416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key science and technology challenges which will facilitate the transition from a "make do and mend" philosophy inevitably restricting the degree of intelligence which can be engineered and the "designer materials systems" philosophy which is the ultimate goal are considered. The longer term vision will need to accord much more closely with nature's design paradigms, with control at the molecular, nano, micro and macro level of synthesis and assembly, of active self repair materials systems in function shapes.

Book Hygro Thermo Magneto Electro Elastic Theory of Anisotropic Doubly Curved Shells

Download or read book Hygro Thermo Magneto Electro Elastic Theory of Anisotropic Doubly Curved Shells written by Francesco Tornabene and published by Società Editrice Esculapio. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 1073 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to present in depth several Higher-order Shear Deformation Theories (HSDTs) by means of a unified approach for studying the Hygro-Thermo-Magneto-Electro- Elastic Theory of Anisotropic Doubly-Curved Shells. In particular, a general coupled multifield theory regarding anisotropic shell structures is provided. The three-dimensional multifield problem is reduced in a two-dimensional one following the principles of the Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) approach and the Equivalent Layer-Wise (ELW) approach, setting a proper configuration model. According to the adopted configuration assumptions, several Higher-order Shear Deformation Theories (HSDTs) are obtained. Furthermore, the strong and weak formulations of the corresponding governing equations are discussed and illustrated. The approach presented in this volume is completely general and represents a valid tool to investigate the physical behavior of many arbitrarily shaped structures. An isogeometric mapping procedure is also illustrated to this aim. Special attention is given also to advanced and innovative constituents, such as Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs), Variable Angle Tow (VAT) composites and Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs). In addition, several numerical applications are used to support the theoretical models. Accurate, efficient and reliable numerical techniques able to approximate both derivatives and integrals are considered, which are respectively the Differential Quadrature (DQ) and Integral Quadrature (IQ) methods. The Theory of Composite Thin Shells is derived in a simple and intuitive manner from the theory of thick and moderately thick shells (First-order Shear Deformation Theory or Reissner- Mindlin Theory). In particular, the Kirchhoff-Love Theory and the Membrane Theory for composite shells are shown. Furthermore, the Theory of Composite Arches and Beams is also exposed. In particular, the equations of the Timoshenko Theory and the Euler-Bernoulli Theory are directly deducted from the equations of singly-curved shells of translation and of plates.

Book Effects of Thermal and Environmental Exposure on the Mechanical Properties of Graphite polyimide Composites

Download or read book Effects of Thermal and Environmental Exposure on the Mechanical Properties of Graphite polyimide Composites written by M. P. Hanson and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composites were exposed in circulating and static air environments up to 589 K for a maximum of 1000 hours. Composites of HT-S, HM-S, Thornel 50S, and Fortafil 5-Y fiber and a new addition type polyimide resin were laminated in a matched-die mold. Flexural strengths, flexural modulus, and interlaminar shear strengths were determined at 297, 533, and 598 K after various durations of exposure. Composite and fiber weight loss characteristics were determined by isothermal gravimetric analysis in air. Properties of composites exposed and tested at the environment temperatures were compared with those determined under short-term exposure. A new short beam interlaminar shear fixture is described. Environmental effects of long-term ambient temperature exposure on the elevated temperature mechanical properties of graphite/polyimide composites are presented.

Book The Compressive Behavior of Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites Subjected to Local Thermal Loading

Download or read book The Compressive Behavior of Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites Subjected to Local Thermal Loading written by Catherine Meaghan Westover and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study has been conducted to determine the effects of local thermal loading on the compressive behavior of glass fiber composites. The primary factors considered were the intensity of thermal loading and the applied compressive load. The material specimens tested were laminate plates composed of Micarta 010 FR4, a fire retardant glass/epoxy laminate. Two types of testing were conducted for heat fluxes of 85 kW/m2, 140 kW/m2, and 195 kW/m2. The first type involved the unloaded radiant thermal testing of the material and provided a baseline from which the effects of thermal loading on the physical properties of the composite specimen were determined. The second type was a combined loading test, which involved loading specimens in compression to a constant applied load and subjecting them to a local thermal load.

Book Electronic Properties of Composite Materials

Download or read book Electronic Properties of Composite Materials written by M. A. Leeds and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composites are the fastest growing class of structural material. Consequently, electronic properties are often difficult to find. This report was prepared in order to present a compilation of reliable data on the electronic and electrical properties of composites. Composites provide an opportunity to tailor the properties to the application; a factor that allows designers an unlimited variety of new materials for new uses. It is this feature that has contributed to the rapid growth of composites. The electrical properties of a composite can be of vital importance in the use or application of the material in a system. The designer therefore, must be able to obtain the necessary electrical or electronic property data to guide him in the materials selection. It is the purpose of this report to assist the designer and engineer in fulfilling that requirement. Properties This report provides a compilation of the most commonly required electronic properties data of structural composites. Thermal properties often influence electrical design; consequently several of these properties are included. The specific properties tabulated are: Arc Resistance Thermal Conductivity Arc Tracking Resistance Linear Thermal Expansion Dielectric Constant Coefficient Dissipation Factor Electrical (Volume) Resistivity Electrical (Volume) Conductivity Other electrical and thermal properties are compiled as the data was made available.

Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Multiscale Modeling and Characterization of Elastic Inelastic Behavior of Engineering Materials written by S. Ahzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this proceeding are a collection of the works presented at the IUTAM symposium-Marrakech 2002 (October 20-25) which brought together scientists from various countries. These papers cover contemporary topics in multiscale modeling and characterization of materials behavior of engineering materials. They were selected to focus on topics related to deformation and failure in metals, alloys, intermetallics and polymers including: experimental techniques, deformation and failure mechanisms, dislocation-based modelling, microscopic-macroscopic averaging schemes, application to forming processes and to phase transformation, localization and failure phenomena, and computational advances. Key areas that are covered by some of the papers include modeling of material deformation at various scales. At the atomistic scale, results from MD simulations pertaining to deformation mechanisms in nano-crystalline materials as well as dislocation-defect interactions are presented. Advances in modeling of deformation in metals using discrete dislocation analyses are also presented, providing an insight into this emerging scientific technique that can be used to model deformation at the microscale. These papers address current engineering problems, including deformation of thin fIlms, dislocation behavior and strength during nanoindentation, strength in metal matrix composites, dislocation-crack interaction, development of textures in polycrystals, and problems involving twining and shape memory behavior. On Behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to thank Professor P.
