Successful pulsed holographic experiments on composite rotor blades are also reported. An evaluation of the effects that various surface finishes have on the holographic construction process which indicated that surface roughnesses from 4 microinches (very smooth) to 1000 microinches are amenable to the method. The development of the theory required to relate holographic records to the strain patterns and areas of maximum strain present on the large structures, together with experimental studies exhibiting good correlation between the holographically calculated strain and that measured with gages.

Book Holographic Nondestructive Tests Performed on Composite Samples of Ceramic epoxy fiberglass Sandwich Structure

Download or read book Holographic Nondestructive Tests Performed on Composite Samples of Ceramic epoxy fiberglass Sandwich Structure written by Robert L. Kurtz and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a hologram storing more than one wave is illuminated with coherent light, the reconstructed wave fronts interfere with each other or with any other phase-related wave front derived from the illuminating source. This multiple wave front comparison is called holographic interferometry, and its application is called holographic nondestructive testing (HNDT). The theoretical aspects of HNDT techniques and the sensitivity of the holographic system to the geometrical placement of the optical components are briefly discussed. A unique HNDT system which is mobile and possesses variable sensitivity to stress amplitude is described, and experimental evidence of the application of this system to the testing of the hidden debonds in a ceramic-epoxy-fiberglass structure used for sample testing of the radome of the Pershing missile system is presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holographic Nondestructive Testing presents a unified discussion of the principles and methods of holography and its application holographic nondestructive testing. The book discusses in detail the basic theoretical concepts, the experimental methods for recording holograms, and different specialized holographic techniques. Several kinds of holography are discussed in the beginning chapters such as continuous-wave holography, pulsed holography, and interferometric holography. Other topics covered in the book are holographic surface contouring, holographic correlation, and holographic vibration analysis. Microwave and acoustical holography are the major areas of interest in Chapters 9 and 10. The text serves as an important reference to both engineers and optical scientists.

This book was released on 2013-06-30 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increased use of polymer matrix composites in structural applications has led to the growing need for a very high level of quality control and testing of products to ensure and monitor performance over time. Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of polymer matrix composites explores a range of NDE techniques and the use of these techniques in a variety of application areas. Part one provides an overview of a range of NDE and NDT techniques including eddy current testing, shearography, ultrasonics, acoustic emission, and dielectrics. Part two highlights the use of NDE techniques for adhesively bonded applications. Part three focuses on NDE techniques for aerospace applications including the evaluation of aerospace composites for impact damage and flaw characterisation. Finally, the use of traditional and emerging NDE techniques in civil and marine applications is explored in part four. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of polymer matrix composites is a technical resource for researchers and engineers using polymer matrix composites, professionals requiring an understanding of non-destructive evaluation techniques, and academics interested in this field. Explores a range of NDE and NDT techniques and considers future trends Examines in detail NDE techniques for adhesively bonded applications Discusses NDE techniques in aerospace applications including detecting impact damage, ultrasonic techniques and structural health monitoring

Book Nondestructive Characterization of Materials II

Download or read book Nondestructive Characterization of Materials II written by Jean F. Bussière and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possibility of nondestructively characterizing the microstruc ture, morphology or mechanical properties of materials is certainly a fascinating subject. In principle, such techniques can be used at all stages of a material's life - from the early stages of processing, to the end of a structural component's useful life. Interest in the subject thus arises not only from a purely scientific point of view but is also strongly motivated by economic pressures to improve productivity and quality in manufacturing, to insure the reliability and extend the life of existing structures. The present volume represents the edited papers presented at the Second International Symposium on the Nondestructive Characterization of Materials, held in Montreal, Canada, July 21-23, 1986. The Proceedings are divided into eight sections, which reflect the multidisciplinary nature of characterizing materials nondestructively: Polymers and Composites, Ceramics and Powder Metallurgy, Metals, Layered Structures/Adhesive Bonds/Welding, Degradation/Aging, Texture/ Anisotropy, Stress, and New Techniques. Invited papers by R. Hadcock of Grumman Aircraft Systems, R. Cannon of Rutgers University, H. Yada of Nippon Steel and R. Bridenbaugh of Alcoa review respectively the processing of polymer matrix composites, ceramics, steel and aluminum, emphasizing the need for material property sensors to improve process and quality control. Two other invited papers, one by A. Wedgwood of Harwell and the other by P. Holler of the IzFP in Saarbrucken review state of the art techniques to characterize particulate matter and metals respectively.
