Book excerpt: Sea surface temperatures in the southwestern Sargasso Sea (within the area bounded by 25 degrees N and 32 deg 30 min N, 57 degrees W and 77 degrees W) were measured by airborne radiation thermometer during August 1967 and in March and November 1968. Surface temperature gradients were generally weak during August. The thermal field during March and November was organized so that temperatures increased in a step-like manner toward the south. The mean gradient of these steps was 1.5C/10km. In one instance, two gradients appeared continuous for 450 and 550 km, respectively, with a mean separation of 85 km. (Author).
