Book Collaborative Research on Thermo Mechanical and Isothermal Low Cycle Fatigue Strength of Ni Base Superalloys and Protective Coatings at Elevated Temperatures in The Society of Materials Science Japan JSMS

Download or read book Collaborative Research on Thermo Mechanical and Isothermal Low Cycle Fatigue Strength of Ni Base Superalloys and Protective Coatings at Elevated Temperatures in The Society of Materials Science Japan JSMS written by Y. Yamazaki and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of collaborative research by "Subcommittee on Superalloys and Coatings" in The Society of Materials Science, Japan (JSMS), are presented, which cover the thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) and high temperature isothermal low-cycle fatigue (ILCF) strengths of Ni-Base superalloy, substrate alloys and the protective coatings. Three kinds of Ni-base superalloys were selected as the substrate: a single crystal alloy, CMSX-4; a directionally solidified alloy, CM247LC; and a polycrystalline alloy, IN738LC. On these substrate specimens the CoNiCrAlY alloy was coated by 250 ?m in thickness by low pressure plasma spraying, and then aluminized. This process was managed and undertaken by one of member companies of the Subcommittee. The round robin TMF and ILCF tests were carried out under a strain ratio of -1 at temperature ranged between 400 and 900°C. In the former the tests were performed under the out-of-phase and diamond phase conditions in which the phase difference between strain and temperature were 180° and 90°, respectively. It is shown by the round-robin tests that the TMF lives, as well as the ILCF, were strongly dependent on the substrate alloys. Many important, or noteworthy results were also found: e.g., the TMF fracture behavior of the coated specimens revealed some unique characteristics that were hardly deduced from that of the bare specimens. The effect of coating on the ILCF life was strongly dependent on the temperature. It was not reasonable, or difficult to try to estimate the TMF life of the coatings from the ILCF test results. Based on the observations on the crack initiation, propagation and the fracture surface, the effects of the substrate alloy and the coating on the TMF and ILCF lives were discussed.

Book Superalloys

Download or read book Superalloys written by Matthew J. Donachie and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2002 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers virtually all technical aspects related to the selection, processing, use, and analysis of superalloys. The text of this new second edition has been completely revised and expanded with many new figures and tables added. In developing this new edition, the focus has been on providing comprehensive and practical coverage of superalloys technology. Some highlights include the most complete and up-to-date presentation available on alloy melting. Coverage of alloy selection provides many tips and guidelines that the reader can use in identifying an appropriate alloy for a specific application. The relation of properties and microstructure is covered in more detail than in previous books.

Book Temperature Dependent Fracture Toughness of a Single Crystal Nickel Superalloy

Download or read book Temperature Dependent Fracture Toughness of a Single Crystal Nickel Superalloy written by W. Steven Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important application of nickel base superalloys is in the industrial gas turbine (IGT) industry, where the high temperature capabilities of these alloys are exploited. Extensive testing has focused on the tensile and fatigue properties of single crystal versions of these alloys. The single crystals are utilized in the hottest parts of the turbine, where a detailed knowledge of material behavior is critical to design and life assessment. However, studies on the effects of temperature on fracture toughness have largely been absent in both past and present literature. Therefore, the goal of this research is to characterize the fracture toughness properties of a second-generation single crystal nickel superalloy at elevated temperatures. The experimental methods follow ASTM guidelines, as does the analysis for the elastic (K) and plastic (J integral) deformation. The toughness values were invalid for plain strain fracture toughness, but this should be expected from a structural material. In spite of this fact, both the K- and J- based analyses reveal consistent trends. Increased plasticity at elevated temperatures results in an overall increase in toughness as temperature increases. Unusual cases with inclined pre-cracks and microstructural defects did not technically yield valid results, although they were consistent with the nominal cases. Overall, the results indicate that the toughness of single crystal nickel alloys is actually quite high. Thus, the lack of work in this subject is understandable. However, it would seem that any design and lifing work would benefit from an understanding of such a fundamental property.

Book Fatigue in Single Crystal Nickel Superalloys

Download or read book Fatigue in Single Crystal Nickel Superalloys written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This program investigates the seemingly unusual behavior of single crystal airfoil materials. The fatigue initiation processes in single crystal (SC) materials are significantly more complicated and involved than fatigue initiation and subsequent behavior of a (single) macrocrack in conventional, isotropic, materials. To understand these differences it is helpful to review the evolution of high temperature airfoils. Characteristics of Single Crystal Materials: Modern gas turbine flight propulsion systems employ single crystal materials for turbine airfoil applications because of their superior performance in resisting creep, oxidation, and thermal mechanical fatigue (TMF). These properties have been achieved by composition and alloying, of course, but also by appropriate crystal orientation and associated anisotropy.

Book On Thermal Fatigue of Nickel Based Superalloys

Download or read book On Thermal Fatigue of Nickel Based Superalloys written by CC. Engler-Pinto and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermal fatigue (TF) behaviour of two single crystal nickel-based super-alloys, SRR99 and CMSX-4, is reported. Single edge wedge specimens are rapidly heated by induction heating of the wedge tip to a maximum temperature between 1000‡C and 1175‡C and cooled to 200‡C by forced air. A constant cycle period is employed for all experiments. The strain distribution along the edge of the TF specimens is measured. Changing the induction frequency leads to different strain ranges. CMSX-4 shows crack initiation always on cast microporosities. SRR99 presents an additional oxidation/spalling/re-oxidation mechanism under low strain loading. An "integrated approach" combining TF and TMF (thermo-mechanical fatigue) is proposed. The applied TMF temperature-strain cycle is deduced from the measured TF-cycle. Under this new temperature-strain cycle the crack initiation life and the total life in TMF for SRR99 are compared with the TF results.
