Book excerpt: Humans first used carbon as chars from firewood in ritual paintings and primitive metallurgical processes. Natural forms of carbon have been known since antiquity, yet the knowledge of the carbon element in chemistry and its technical applications on a larger scale are a relatively recent development. The industrial revolution in Europe two centuries ago led the way to the numerous applications of these graphitic forms that are still used today. Graphite and Precursors features short tutorial articles on different topics related to the science and technology of carbons intended for engineers, students of Materials Science and scientists who are seeking a fundamental understanding without "reinventing the wheel." This first volume of the World of Carbon book series focuses on graphite and its precursors, including its origin and various implications. The basic properties of hexagonal graphite are developed, and several theoretical and experimental approaches explain why this crystalline solid is fascinating in solid state physics. Also featured are the numerous applications connected to thermal, mechanical and chemical graphites, as well as their various industrial uses in polycrystalline form. Finally, carbon precursors are introduced.

Book Structure and Properties of High Performance Fibers

Download or read book Structure and Properties of High Performance Fibers written by Gajanan Bhat and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structure and Properties of High-Performance Fibers explores the relationship between the structure and properties of a wide range of high-performance fibers. Part I covers high-performance inorganic fibers, including glasses and ceramics, plus carbon fibers of various types. In Part II, high-performance synthetic polymer fibers are discussed, while Part III reviews those natural fibers that can be used to create advanced textiles. The high-performance properties of these fibers are related to their chemistry and morphology, as well as the ways in which they are synthesized and spun. High-performance fibers form the basis of textile materials with applications in protection, medicine, and composite reinforcement. Fibers are selected for these technical applications due to their advanced physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. Offers up-to-date coverage of new and advanced materials for the fiber and textile industries Reviews structure-property relationships of high-performance inorganic, carbon, synthetic polymer, and natural fibers Includes contributions from an international team of authors edited by an expert in the field Reviews those natural fibers that can be used to create advanced textiles

Book The Structure and Properties of Artificial and Natural Graphite

Download or read book The Structure and Properties of Artificial and Natural Graphite written by T. J. Neubert and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was pointed out in 1942 that graphite was expected to exhibit changes in its physical properties when bombarded with fast neutrons. Such neutron-induced changes do take place and have been the subject of extensive investigation. The purpose of this paper is to record the various physical and chemical properties which characterize the initial unbombarded graphite. No claim is made that the present review is critical or exhaustive. What data have been listed are principally those which have a peculiar interest relative to the problem being investigated.

Book Carbon Alloys

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. Yasuda
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9780080441634
  • Pages : 594 pages

Download or read book Carbon Alloys written by E. Yasuda and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the Japanese have funded a comprehensive study of carbon materials which incorporate other elements including boron, nitrogen and fluorine, hence the title of the project "Carbon Alloys". Coined in 1992, the phrase "Carbon Alloys" can be applied to those materials mainly composed of carbon materials in multi-component systems. The carbon atoms of each component have a physical and/or chemical interactive relationship with other atoms or compounds. The carbon atoms of the components may have different hybrid bonding orbitals to create quite different carbon components. Eiichi Yasuda and his team consider the definition of Carbon Alloys, present the results of the Carbon Alloys projects, describe typical Carbon Alloys and their uses, discuss recent techniques for their characterization, and finally, illustrate potential applications and future developments for Carbon Alloy science. The book contains over thirty chapters on these studies from as many researchers. The most modern of techniques, particularly in the area of spectroscopy, were used as diagnostic tools, and many of these are applicable to pure carbons also. Porosity in carbons received considerable attention.
