Book Material Thermal Conductivity Measurement by the 3 omega Method

Download or read book Material Thermal Conductivity Measurement by the 3 omega Method written by Nadine Al-Khudary and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characterization of polymers is gaining a great attention as they are one of the main constituents of future flexible or organic electronics. Given the fact that thermal management is an important issue in the frame work of flexible electronics, the knowledge of the thermal conductivity of polymer materials is needed. In this work, we propose the measurement of polymer material thermal conductivity using the three omega method. This method requires heating a metallic line conductor placed on the surface of the material under test by an alternating current source. The first measurements were done on polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) polymer material for which a special procedure that consists in embedding the metallic line conductors near the surface has been applied. In addition to the well-known limitations of photolithography process which are the cost and the process duration, a particular concern lies in the fabrication of the metallic conductors by such process which might be destructive in case of polymer materials. Consequently, we propose an alternative method for this kind of materials based on inkjet printing technology. The thermal conductivities of polyimide and polyetherether ketone have been successfully measured using the three omega method combined with inkjet printing technology for sample preparation. Numerical simulations using finite element method (FEM) are also performed. Finally, experimental measurements are compared to Cahill's analytical solution and FEM modelling. The overall results demonstrate that the inkjet printing technology is a good candidate for the characterization of flexible materials in terms of thermal conductivity.

Book Thermal Conductivity Measurements of Amorphous Metal Thin Films Via the 3 omega Method

Download or read book Thermal Conductivity Measurements of Amorphous Metal Thin Films Via the 3 omega Method written by Kai Zhan and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amorphous multicomponent metals have promising applications in novel electronic devices because of their atomically smooth surface morphology and lack of grain boundaries. It is important to understand the thermal transport properties of amorphous metals and an accurate measurement of their thermal conductivity will be essential for further improvement of device performance and reliability. Here, the 3[omega] method has been improved and extended to investigate the room temperature thermal conductivity of amorphous metals. Iterative, amorphous multicomponent metallic films are deposited on silicon substrate by magnetron sputter deposition. A thin layer of hafnium oxide film is deposited on top of amorphous metals by atomic layer deposition, providing a reliable insulation between an aluminum heater and the amorphous metal film. The room temperature thermal conductivities of thin-film hafnium oxide and silicon nitride are also measured to demonstrate the capability and reliability of the 3[omega] technique.

Book Transport Phenomena in Micro and Nanoscale Functional Materials and Devices

Download or read book Transport Phenomena in Micro and Nanoscale Functional Materials and Devices written by Joao B. Sousa and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport Phenomena in Micro- and Nanoscale Functional Materials and Devices offers a pragmatic view on transport phenomena for micro- and nanoscale materials and devices, both as a research tool and as a means to implant new functions in materials. Chapters emphasize transport properties (TP) as a research tool at the micro/nano level and give an experimental view on underlying techniques. The relevance of TP is highlighted through the interplay between a micro/nanocarrier’s characteristics and media characteristics: long/short-range order and disorder excitations, couplings, and in energy conversions. Later sections contain case studies on the role of transport properties in functional nanomaterials. This includes transport in thin films and nanostructures, from nanogranular films, to graphene and 2D semiconductors and spintronics, and from read heads, MRAMs and sensors, to nano-oscillators and energy conversion, from figures of merit, micro-coolers and micro-heaters, to spincaloritronics. Presents a pragmatic description of electrical transport phenomena in micro- and nanoscale materials and devices from an experimental viewpoint Provides an in-depth overview of the experimental techniques available to measure transport phenomena in micro- and nanoscale materials Features case studies to illustrate how each technique works Highlights emerging areas of interest in micro- and nanomaterial transport phenomena, including spintronics

Book Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Download or read book Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes written by Yan Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

Book Construction of a Thermal Conductivity Measurement Platform for Bulk and Thin Film Materials Based on the 3 Omega Technique

Download or read book Construction of a Thermal Conductivity Measurement Platform for Bulk and Thin Film Materials Based on the 3 Omega Technique written by Abbas Jaber and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanostructured materials show signicant enhancement in the thermoelectric g-ure of merit (zT) due to quantum connement eects. Improving the eciency ofthermoelectric devices allows for the development of better, more economical wasteheat recovery systems. Such systems may be used as bottoming or co-generationcycles in conjunction with conventional power cycles to recover some of the wastedheat. Thermal conductivity measurement systems are an important part of the char-acterization processes of thermoelectric materials. These systems must possess thecapability of accurately measuring the thermal conductivity of both bulk and thin-lmsamples at dierent ambient temperatures. This paper discusses the construction, validation, and improvement of a thermalconductivity measurement platform based on the 3-Omega technique. Room temperaturemeasurements of thermal conductivity done on control samples with known propertiessuch as undoped bulk silicon (Si), bulk gallium arsenide (GaAs), and silicon dioxide(SiO2) thin lms yielded 150 W=m - K, 50 W=m - K, and 1:46 W=m - K respectively. These quantities were all within 8% of literature values. In addition, the thermalconductivity of bulk SiO2 was measured as a function of temperature in a Helium-4 cryostat from 75K to 250K. The results showed good agreement with literaturevalues that all fell within the error range of each measurement. The uncertainty inthe measurements ranged from 19% at 75K to 30% at 250K. Finally, the systemwas used to measure the room temperature thermal conductivity of a nanocompositecomposed of cadmium selenide, CdSe, nanocrystals in an indium selenide, In2Se3,matrix as a function of the concentration of In2Se3. The observed trend was inqualitative agreement with the expected behavior.i.
