Book Thermal Characterization of Two Epoxy Systems

Download or read book Thermal Characterization of Two Epoxy Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composite materials for application on Naval aircraft must possess certain unique characteristics including toughness, resistance to temperature and moisture, and high specific strength. Two resin systems being investigated for potential airframe applications include Phthalonitrile and PETl-5. Both are addition systems with high temperature applications. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) were used to determine the glass transition temperatures (Tg) before and after thermal heat treatment as well as to determine thermal decomposition kinetics. Both resin systems were autoclaved cured but it was found that the Phthalonitrile resin needed an additional post cure at 3750C for 8 hours in order to maximize mechanical properties. Decomposition kinetics were utilized to investigate the effect of post cure Phthalonitrile compared to the standard autoclave cure.

Book Thermal Characterization of Polymeric Materials

Download or read book Thermal Characterization of Polymeric Materials written by Edith Turi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 987 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal Characterization of Polymeric Materials is a critical review and a concise evaluation of the application of thermal analysis in polymer science and engineering. This book is divided into nine chapters that specifically tackle the instrumentation, theory, and a wide variety of applications of thermal characterization. The introductory chapters provide an overview of all aspects of thermal analytical methods and apparatus and the theory underlying the basic principles of thermal analysis. These chapters also examine the theories and functions of state for thermometry, dilatometry, thermomechanical analysis, calorimetry, thermogravimetry. These topics are followed by a discussion on single-component and multicomponent systems and their phase transitions, as influenced by concentration, pressure, deformation, molecular weight, and copolymerization. The subsequent chapters explore the influence of important chemical and physical parameters on the glass transition, crystallization, and melting of thermoplastic materials. The discussion then shifts to the theoretical aspects of polymer-polymer compatibility, phase separation, and miscibility in mixed polymer systems. This book further considers the thermal analysis in thermosets, elastomers, and fibers. The concluding chapters present the methods of obtaining information on the relative flammability properties of polymers, for screening fire retardant additives, and for studying the mechanism of flame inhibition. These chapters also look into the thermal analysis of antioxidants, stabilizers, lubricants, plasticizers, impact modifiers, and fire retardants. Polymer scientists and researchers will find this book invaluable.

Book Characterisation of Polymers by Thermal Analysis

Download or read book Characterisation of Polymers by Thermal Analysis written by W.M. Groenewoud and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-05-21 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal Analysis (TA) has become an indispensable family of analytical techniques in the polymer research. The increased importance of these techniques can be seen as the result of three more or less parallel developments:• a tempestuous development of TA measuring techniques in combination with a high degree of automation,• the strongly increased understanding of the underlaying theory and,• the increasing knowledge of the relation between the polymers' chemical structure and their physical properties. These areas are still in their developmental stages, especially the third area. The increasing knowledge of the dependence of physical properties on chemical structure just accentuated more and more the need for accurate thermoanalytical measurements, and this knowledge is very important for the first stages of the development of new polymeric systems. Besides, the contribution of TA remains necessary for the technical and commercial development of such a new polymer system. The use of the various TA techniques in these processes is described in this book in nine chapters, while chapter ten illustrates the information obtained about different polymers during special case studies. This book illustrates in this way, applications of a wide variety of TA techniques whilst it is written from a materials characterisation rather than from a TA point of view with attention being paid to the chemical structure/physical properties correlations.

Book Thermal Analysis of Various Epoxy Mixtures

Download or read book Thermal Analysis of Various Epoxy Mixtures written by Bernard R. LaLiberte and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three distinct types of epoxides in the SP-250 system. The epoxides were individually mixed with Monuron. Also, three-component mixtures, epoxide + Dicy/Monuron, were prepared with dicyandiamide. The mixtures were cured by differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that the isothermal heat of reactions of the two- and three-component systems were in reasonable agreement with the respective dynamic recations, consequently, the extent of isothermal cures could be determined from the two heating modes. The synergistic effect of dicyandiamide and monuron, on the curing process, was simulated by the isothermal reaction of two mixtures. A type of reaction Kinetics having the dimensions of temperature per time was evaluated in this report.

Book Chemical Characterization and Two step Cure Kinetics of a High Performance Epoxy Adhesive System

Download or read book Chemical Characterization and Two step Cure Kinetics of a High Performance Epoxy Adhesive System written by Joel D. Flores and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Author's abstract] The cure kinetics of a high performance epoxy adhesive system based on TGDDM/DGEBA/DDS/DICY and toughened with carboxy terminated poly(acrylonitrile-co-butadiene) rubber with aluminum filler was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. Three different sets of experiments were performed to follow the cure kinetics of the adhesive in a multi-step cure cycle. Three-dimensional plots of data entered into a surface-fitting software allowed for the interpolation of the degree and rate of cure as functions of heating rate and temperature, time and temperature, or time and initial degree of cure. Isothermal cure was modeled successfully using the kinetic model of Kamal. The gel point of the adhesive was measured using dynamic shear rheometry under isothermal conditions. Methods were developed to combine ramp and soak segments so that both the conversion (a) and rate of cure (da/dt) can be followed through a two-step cure cycle of the type used to cure composite prepreg and adhesive in an industrial setting.

Book Handbook of Epoxy Blends

Book Thermal Characterization and Model Free Kinetics of Aged Epoxies and Foams Using TGA and DSC Methods

Download or read book Thermal Characterization and Model Free Kinetics of Aged Epoxies and Foams Using TGA and DSC Methods written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two classes of materials, poly(methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) or PMDI foam, and cross-linked epoxy resins, were characterized using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), to help understand the effects of aging and %E2%80%9Cbake-out%E2%80%9D. The materials were evaluated for mass loss and the onset of decomposition. In some experiments, volatile materials released during heating were analyzed via mass spectroscopy. In all, over twenty materials were evaluated to compare the mass loss and onset temperature for decomposition. Model free kinetic (MFK) measurements, acquired using variable heating rate TGA experiments, were used to calculate the apparent activation energy of thermal decomposition. From these compiled data the effects of aging, bake-out, and sample history on the thermal stability of materials were compared. No significant differences between aged and unaged materials were detected. Bake-out did slightly affect the onset temperature of decomposition but only at the highest bake-out temperatures. Finally, some recommendations for future handling are made.
