Book Thermal barrier coating by polymer derived ceramic technique for application in exhaust systems

Download or read book Thermal barrier coating by polymer derived ceramic technique for application in exhaust systems written by Gilvan Barroso and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are ceramic coating systems developed to reduce the heat transfer from a hot medium to the coated parts. This technology can be used in automotive exhaust systems to reduce the heat transfer from the exhaust gases to the metal pipes. As a result, catalytic converters can reach the ideal temperature for the conversion of gases more quickly, reducing emissions. In order to be effective, coatings must be applied to the inside of pipes. However, conventional techniques for the preparation of ceramic coatings are not suitable for the deposition of coatings inside of long pipes with small diameter, or are too expensive. In this work, a TBC system was developed using the polymer-derived ceramics (PDC) technique. In this method, ceramic coatings are obtained by the thermal conversion of preceramic polymers into ceramics, after deposition of the coatings by simple lacquer techniques. Fillers are used to tailor the microstructure and the properties of the coatings. This book contains a review of the literature on PDC coatings, the procedures for the preparation of the TBCs, as well as their properties.

Download or read book Evaluation of Monolithic Ceramics and Ceramic Thermal Barrier Coatings for Diesel Engine Applications written by Jeffrey J. Swab and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Metals and Ceramics Research Branch (MCRB) of the Weapons and Materials Research Directorate is providing ceramic material characterization and evaluation to the Tank Automotive Research, Development, and Engineering Center (TARDEC) as a part of a project entitled "Fighting Vehicle Propulsion Technology Using Ceramic Materials." Through research and exploratory development of advanced ceramics and other technologies, the objective of this project is to improve the mobility of future Army fighting vehicles. The purpose is to demonstrate the capabilities of ceramics, other advanced materials, tribology, and combustion technologies to contribute to a higher power density and lower fuel consumption diesel engine. Four commercial silicon nitrides were purchased and characterized for potential application as piston crowns, valves, and valve seats. A sodium-zirconium-phosphate (NZP) family of materials was examined for exhaust port applications, and several thermal barrier coating (TBC) materials were examined as possible additions to metallic piston crowns, rings, and cylinder liners. This report contains the results of this preliminary characterization and evaluation.

This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of low conductivity and high temperature capable thermal barrier coatings requires advanced testing techniques that can accurately and effectively evaluate coating thermal conductivity under future high-performance and low-emission engine heat-flux conditions. In this paper, a unique steady-state CO2 laser (wavelength 10.6 microns) heat-flux approach is described for determining the thermal conductivity and conductivity deduced cyclic durability of ceramic thermal and environmental barrier coating systems at very high temperatures (up to 1700 C) under large thermal gradients. The thermal conductivity behavior of advanced thermal and environmental barrier coatings for metallic and Si-based ceramic matrix composite (CMC) component applications has also been investigated using the laser conductivity approach. The relationships between the lattice and radiation conductivities as a function of heat flux and thermal gradient at high temperatures have been examined for the ceramic coating systems. The steady-state laser heat-flux conductivity approach has been demonstrated as a viable means for the development and life prediction of advanced thermal barrier coatings for future turbine engine applications.
