Book Thermal Annealing of Neutron induced Discomposition in Artificial Graphite

Download or read book Thermal Annealing of Neutron induced Discomposition in Artificial Graphite written by T. J. Neubert and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distribution spectra for the thermal annealing of the disturbances produced in artificial graphite by fast neutron bombardment, suggest that interstitial disturbances which anneal out below 1000 degrees C fall into two broad classes, which mean characteristic activation energies of 1.4 and 1.8 electron volts. The disturbances with characteristic energy 1.4 ev seem to be predominantly responsible for the electrical resistivity effects, while those with energy 1.8 ev seem to be the most important disturbances so far as elastic modulus effects are concerned. The secondary maxima in the distribution curves indicate the extent to which disturbances characteristic of the electrical resistivity changes affect the elastic modulus changes and vice versa. The precision of the experimental techniques, herein employed, is not adequate to permit a discussion of the Wigner effect in terms of any specific model.

Book Thermal Annealing of Neutron induced Discomposition in Artificial Graphite

Download or read book Thermal Annealing of Neutron induced Discomposition in Artificial Graphite written by T. J. Neubert and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An attempt has been made to discover the mechanism for the neutron induced discomposition of graphite by means of experiments in which irradiated specimens were heated for long periods at successively higher temperatures. The properties were the electrical resistivity and elastic modulus.

Book Neutron induced Discomposition of Graphite

Download or read book Neutron induced Discomposition of Graphite written by T. J. Neubert and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fast neutron bombardment of graphite causes displacement of carbon atoms from normal lattice sites (Wigner effect); vacancies are produced and some of the displaced atoms are captured at interstitial positions and other trapping centers. The process is called discomposition. Elastic modulus, electrical resistance, breaking strength, and crystallite volume increase, and thermal conductivity decreases. The effects of heating are described. Results are interpreted in terms of a working model based on the activation energy required for the removal of the various effects. Contributions of various workers to the development of the model are reviewed.

Book Nuclear Graphite

Download or read book Nuclear Graphite written by R. E. Nightingale and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Graphite focuses on the development and uses of nuclear graphite, including machining practices, manufacture, nuclear properties and structure, radiation, and electrical resistance. The selection first discusses the applications of graphite in the nuclear industry, machining practices, and manufacture. Discussions focus on early, current, and future applications of graphite, impregnation, graphitization, purification, general machining techniques, and equipment and methods in the nuclear industry. The book then examines the structure and nuclear and properties of graphite. The text evaluates radiation-induced structural and dimensional changes; radiation effects on electrical and thermal properties; and radiation effects on mechanical properties. Topics include radiation effects on crystal structure, electrical resistance, thermoelectric power, magnetoresistance, coefficient of friction, irradiation under stress, and elastic moduli of nuclear graphite. The book also ponders on stored energy, annealing radiation effects, and gas-graphite systems. The selection is a dependable source of data for readers interested in the applications of nuclear graphite.
