A creative genius and prolific inventor, Theremin launched the field of electronic music virtually singlehandedly in 1920 with the musical instrument that bears his name. The theremin -- the only instrument that is played without being touched -- created a sensation worldwide and paved the way for the modern synthesizer. Its otherworldly sound became familiar in sci-fi films and even in rock music. This magical instrument that charmed millions, however, is only the beginning of the story. As a Soviet scientist, Theremin surrendered his life and work to the service of State espionage. On assignment in Depression-era America, he became the toast of New York society and worked the engines of capitalist commerce while passing data on U.S. industrial technology to the Soviet apparat. Following his sudden disappearance from New York in 1938, Theremin was exiled to a Siberian labor camp. He subsequently vanished into the top-secret Soviet intelligence machine and was presumed dead for nearly thirty years. Using the same technology that lay behind the theremin, he designed bugging devices that eavesdropped on U.S. diplomatic offices and stood at the center of a pivotal cold war confrontation. Throughout his life, Theremin developed many other electronic wonders, including one of the earliest televisions and multimedia devices that anticipated performance art and virtual reality by decades. In this first full biography of Leon Theremin, Albert Glinsky depicts the inventor's nearly one-hundred-year life span as a microcosm of the twentieth century. Theremin is seen at the epicenter of most of themajor events of the century: the Russian Revolution, two world wars, America's Great Depression, Stalin's purges, the cold war, and perestroika. His life emerges as no less than a metaphor for the divergence of communism and capitalism. A reply to the call to rethink the material constraints on materialism itself, this book uses oscillation to refer simultaneously to movement within and between bodies of theory, within theories of the body, and within and between institutional spaces in which such theory is taken up. Hitchcock argues that oscillation augurs a politics that both shares the legacy of historical materialism and recognizes the critical edge of cultural materialism in its approach to the social practices of everyday life. In a series of ingenious readings, he rethinks the problem of ideology for Marx and his interpreters (Etienne Balibar in particular); provides a materialist intervention on the status of the body for theory; proposes an analysis of theories of space and the space of theory in the era of "cartographic anxiety"; sees the ghosts of materialism oscillating a good deal more wildly than Derrida would have it; offers a daring approach to shoes and fetishism within transnational capitalism; and concludes with a novel lesson on what the theremin, an electronic musical instrument based on oscillators, might teach us about the importance of sense perception for materialist thought. As both a descriptive device for the state of materialism and a critical tool within a polemic about whatmaterialism can do at this juncture, oscillation provides a brilliant key to materialist critique.

Book excerpt: We will address the historical development of the most relevant electronic instruments and explain each one without detailing their operation since many no longer operate today. In this sense, it is necessary to mention that it is not that the electronic instruments not developed in this volume do not matter, but that the importance of those addressed is much greater. Therefore, we will focus on the analysis of how they were manufactured and, where appropriate, how they evolved to become modern electronic music instruments. Since the design of new musical instruments has been complex, the instruments mentioned throughout this volume will not be explained primarily in technical detail. Still, the most relevant points will be mentioned as an introduction. Something that we must consider all the time when reading this volume is that all the instruments discussed have a common factor: their design has always been intrinsically linked to the technologies available to their inventor, depending on the time in which he lived. While many of them may seem somewhat outdated or childish when compared to those that exist today, we must never forget that most of these instruments ignored practices, aesthetic ideals, and industry standards about the time and place in which they were conceived, such as the ease of manufacture (the telharmonium is an incredible example), the sonic predictability and the economy of scale to be able to mass-manufacture them. For practical reasons, I have divided this volume into three sections: those developed in the 18th century, those produced in the 19th century, and finally, those manufactured in the 20th century, many of which are still in operation today. In this way, we will realize how most of the electronic instruments that are currently used are not more than a century old after they were manufactured for the first time, which is quite surprising. On the other hand, although a highly considerable number of patents for electronic instruments have been registered (especially in the 20th century), I have limited myself to mentioning the most relevant of them to have a notion of how it is that we got to the current point in this ambit. With this in mind, we will inevitably ask ourselves: Why have only very few of the electronic instruments discussed in this volume survived to date? Part of the answer to this question lies in the fact that those instruments that made it have had the capacity to adjust to the rapid and aggressive change of modernity, and because they have been conceived with too much intuition in mind; that is, they work perfectly or rarely fail, they generate familiarity in the consumer at the first contact, and their way of producing them has proven to be profitable for the investors behind the project or the company that manufactures them.

Bruce Elder argues that the authors of many of the manifestoes that announced in such lively ways the appearance of yet another artistic movement shared a common aspiration: they proposed to reformulate the visual, literary, and performing arts so that they might take on attributes of the cinema. The cinema, Elder argues, became, in the early decades of the twentieth century, a pivotal artistic force around which a remarkable variety and number of aesthetic forms took shape. To demonstrate this, Elder begins with a wide-ranging discussion that opens up some broad topics concerning modernity’s cognitive (and perceptual) regime, with a view to establishing that a crisis within that regime engendered some peculiar, and highly questionable, epistemological beliefs and enthusiasms. Through this discussion, Elder advances the startling claim that a crisis of cognition precipitated by modernity engendered, by way of response, a peculiar sort of “pneumatic (spiritual) epistemology.” Elder then shows that early ideas of the cinema were strongly influenced by this pneumatic epistemology and uses this conception of the cinema to explain its pivotal role in shaping two key moments in early-twentieth-century art: the quest to bring forth a pure, “objectless” (non-representational) art and Russian Suprematism, Constructivism, and Productivism.
