Book excerpt: National Bestseller The inside story of how A League of Their Own—one of the most beloved baseball movies of all time—developed from an unheralded piece of American history into a perennial cinematic favorite. Featuring exclusive interviews and behind the scenes memories from the original cast and creators, . No Crying in Baseball is a rollicking, revelatory deep dive into a one‑of‑a‑kind film. Before A League of Their Own, few American girls could imagine themselves playing professional ball (and doing it better than the boys). But Penny Marshall's genre outlier became an instant classic and significant aha moment for countless young women who saw that throwing like a girl was far from an insult. Part fly‑on‑the‑wall narrative, part immersive pop nostalgia, No Crying in Baseball is for readers who love stories about subverting gender roles as well as fans of the film who remain passionate thirty years after its release. With key anecdotes from the cast, crew, and diehard fanatics, Carlson presents the definitive, first‑ever history of the making of the treasured film that inspired generations of Dottie Hinsons to dream bigger and aim for the sky.

Book A Girl s Journey

Download or read book A Girl s Journey written by Paméla Tate-Roger and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-02-21 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Girls Journey: There's No Crying in Baseball is a childrens book illustrating the character and integrity of a young trailblazer. My name is Pamla Tate-Roger, the author of this groundbreaking project and mother of this young trailblazer named Leiyah. A Girls Journey: There's No Crying in Baseball is based on my daughters experience in becoming the first female baseball player at her middle school in San Francisco, California. In addition to that, she became the first female baseball player to ever play in a SFUSD Boys Middle School Baseball Championship, and ultimately, she became the first female player to ever play on a SFUSD Middle School Boys Championship Baseball Team in 2013. This groundbreaking life event was written for the purpose of teaching children and families about fortitude, integrity, gender roles, and the concept of team. Since the Championship game in 2013, Leiyahs middle school team went on to play in the 2014 playoffs, but they were eliminated in the second round. Leiyah has been fortunate to have selected to play for San Francisco Rec and Parks first ever All-Girls Baseball Team, the San Francisco Bay Sox, who will represent the City and County of San Francisco in the Inaugural Baseball For All Tournament in Orlando, FL May 30 June 4, 2015 (visit www.baseballforall.com for more information). The world has undergone such drastic changes in how gender roles are formulated and shaped within the last couple of decades. Women have made great strides in civil, academic, and professional arenas; however, many areas remain male-dominated. Even with the 2014 success of Mone Davis, the first girl to earn a win and to pitch a shutout in the Little League World Series, a girls road in this male dominated sport is riddled with bumps and bruises. A Girls Journey: There's No Crying in Baseball is written to illustrate how destructive bullying and antiquated stereotypes can be, as well as how growth and strength comes from hard work and perseverance when a girl decides do something out of the "normal confines of society and she decides she wants to play baseball. The book contains fifty-eight pages, twenty-four illustrations, and is in hardcover as well as e-book format. The book contains 12 site words, 18 challenge words, and 5 open-ended discussion questions and 1,898 words. This book is self-published and will be available online, in stores, or on my website at www.pamelatateroger.com, on May 1, 2015. We are currently scheduling book-signing events, children's writing workshops, and other promotional opportunities. Please contact my support team at [email protected]. Book There s No Crying in Newsrooms

Download or read book There s No Crying in Newsrooms written by Kristin Grady Gilger and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-11-04 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There’s No Crying in Newsrooms tells the stories of remarkable women who broke through barrier after barrier at media organizations around the country over the past four decades. They started out as editorial assistants, fact checkers and news secretaries and ended up running multi-million-dollar news operations that determine a large part of what Americans read, view and think about the world. These women, who were calling in news stories while in labor and parking babies under their desks, never imagined that 40 years later young women entering the news business would face many of the same battles they did – only with far less willingness to put up and shut up. The female pioneers featured in this book have many lessons to teach about what it takes to succeed in media or any other male-dominated organization, and their message is more important now than ever before. Including stories and data from 2020—a year of unprecedented turmoil from a worldwide pandemic, rampant social upheaval, and divisive political battles—the updated edition of this chronicle of courage serves as both inspiration and impetus to continue the fight for equity and advancement in the media industry.

Book Hollywood Sports Movies and the American Dream

Download or read book Hollywood Sports Movies and the American Dream written by Grant Wiedenfeld and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Through the heart of Hollywood cinema runs a surprising current of progressive politics. Sports movies, a genre that has flourished since the mid-seventies, evoke the American dream and represent the nation to itself. Once considered mere credos for Reaganism, on closer view, movies from Rocky (1976) to Ali (2001) dream of democratic participation and recognition more than individual success. In every case, off-field relationships take precedence over on-field competition. Arranged chronologically, this critical study of six major sports films also tells the story of multiculturalism's gradual adoption. The mainstream's first minority heroes are paradoxically white ethnic, rural, working-class men, exemplified by Rocky, Slap Shot (1977) and The Natural (1984); Black, brown, and women characters follow in White Men Can't Jump (1992), A League of Their Own (1992), and Ali. But despite their insistence on community and diversity these popular dramas show limited faith in civic institutions. Hannah Arendt, Jeffrey Alexander, and others inform original analysis and commentary on the political significance of popular culture. Reading these familiar movies from another angle paints a fresh picture of how the United States has imagined democracy since its bicentennial"--

Book The MVP Machine

Download or read book The MVP Machine written by Ben Lindbergh and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Move over, Moneyball -- this New York Times bestseller examines major league baseball's next cutting-edge revolution: the high-tech quest to build better players. As bestselling authors Ben Lindbergh and Travis Sawchik reveal in The MVP Machine, the Moneyball era is over. Fifteen years after Michael Lewis brought the Oakland Athletics' groundbreaking team-building strategies to light, every front office takes a data-driven approach to evaluating players, and the league's smarter teams no longer have a huge advantage in valuing past performance. Lindbergh and Sawchik's behind-the-scenes reporting reveals: How undersized afterthoughts José Altuve and Mookie Betts became big sluggers and MVPs How polarizing pitcher Trevor Bauer made himself a Cy Young contender How new analytical tools have overturned traditional pitching and hitting techniques How a wave of young talent is making MLB both better than ever and arguably worse to watch Instead of out-drafting, out-signing, and out-trading their rivals, baseball's best minds have turned to out-developing opponents, gaining greater edges than ever by perfecting prospects and eking extra runs out of older athletes who were once written off. Lindbergh and Sawchik take us inside the transformation of former fringe hitters into home-run kings, show how washed-up pitchers have emerged as aces, and document how coaching and scouting are being turned upside down. The MVP Machine charts the future of a sport and offers a lesson that goes beyond baseball: Success stems not from focusing on finished products, but from making the most of untapped potential.
