Book excerpt: Tricia and her brother, Shaun Morrissey, recovering from the tragic loss of their parents in an auto accident a couple of years earlier, undergo a period of turmoil in their previously placid lives in London. The turmoil is initiated by Tricia’s trip to the Himalayan mountain region in India, specifically to the mountain top temple of Kedarnath, at an elevation of 12,000 feet, where she suffered an event of memory lapse, possibly caused by inhalation of cannabis. Having returned to London and submitted herself to counseling by her psychotherapist, she is contacted by the newlyweds, Kris and Susan Hamsun, from Washington DC, claiming to know both—what caused the event and the way to emerge from it. Having convinced both Tricia and her skeptical brother, Shaun, as to the veracity of his claim, Kris, assisted by his Norwegian buddy, Jurgen, and other associates from his own treasure-hunting adventure, train and assist the duo in the successful recovery of the treasure. Post the successful task completion, Tricia is then advised to seek out the remaining 6 companions and similarly assist them in executing their treasure recovery task. While undertaking this transformation, Tricia makes her first contact with one companion, based on guidance received from the Dalai Lama and a Buddhist sage.

Download or read book Encyclopedia of American Humorists written by Steven H. Gale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, this book contains entries on famous American Humorists. Humor has been present in American literature, from the beginning, and has developed characteristics that reflect the American character, both regional and national. Although American literature was, in the past, treated as inferior to British literature, there has always been a large popular audience for the genre, which this book shows. The figures with entries in this encyclopedia not only amuse in their writing, but also aim to enlighten- setting out to expose the foibles and foolishness of society and the individuals who compose it. It is the manner in which these authors try to accomplish this end that determines whether they appear in the volume. Indeed, the book will demonstrate that the best humor has at its base, a ready understanding of human nature.
Download or read book Relativism and Realism in Science written by R. Nola and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The institutionalization of History and Philosophy of Science as a distinct field of scholarly endeavour began comparatively earl- though not always under that name - in the Australasian region. An initial lecturing appointment was made at the University of Melbourne immediately after the Second World War, in 1946, and other appoint ments followed as the subject underwent an expansion during the 1950s and 1960s similar to that which took place in other parts of the world. Today there are major Departments at the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales and the University of Wollongong, and smaller groups active in many other parts of Australia and in New Zealand. "Australasian Studies in History and Philosophy of Science" aims to provide a distinctive publication outlet for Australian and New Zealand scholars working in the general area of history, philosophy and social studies of science. Each volume comprises a group of essays on a connected theme, edited by an Australian or a New Zealander with special expertise in that particular area. Papers address general issues, however, rather than local ones; parochial topics are avoided. Further more, though in each volume a majority of the contributors is from Australia or New Zealand, contributions from elsewhere are by no means ruled out. Quite the reverse, in fact - they are actively encour aged wherever appropriate to the balance of the volume in question.

Download or read book Little Sermons That I Have Seen written by Virgil R. Lee and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2024-10-25 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1979, Virgil R. Lee and his family moved to the Dawson Street United Methodist Church in Thomasville, Georgia, where he would serve as pastor. The church newsletter that was mailed was printed on plain white bond paper, which meant the front page was blank. The author determined he’d use the space not for some kind of advertisement or promotion but to say something inspiring and encouraging. With that thought in mind, he wrote the first article, thinking about “little sermons that I have seen” – and from 1979 to 1993, he wrote an article every week under that topic with only an occasional exception. After 1993, when he became district superintendent of the Americus District of the United Methodist Church, he began writing his messages monthly to coincide with the newsletter publication schedule of the district. You’ll enjoy the author’s thoughtful meditations and God-given wisdom on a variety of topics in Little Sermons That I Have Seen.

Download or read book Slumach s Gold written by Rick Antonson and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2007 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slumach's Gold chronicles what is possibly Canada's greatest lost-mine story. It searches out the truth behind a Salish man's hanging for murder in 1891 and tracks the intriguing legend about him that grew after his death. It was a legend that turned into a drama of international fascination when Slumach--the hanged criminal--was mysteriously linked to gold nuggets "the size of walnuts." The stories claimed that Slumach had placed a curse on a hidden motherlode to protect it from interlopers and trespassers just before he plunged to his death "at the wrong end of a five-strand rope." Although many have attempted to find Slumach's gold over the past 100 years, following tantalizing clues that are part of the legend itself, none have succeeded--or have they? Rick Antonson, Mary Trainer and Brian Antonson have diligently sifted through history and myth, separating fact from fiction, but leaving the legend intact--along with the promise of gold yet to be found by some future gold seeker.
